הספר הראשון בסדרת Vegas Aces הוא תחילתו של הסיפור על אלי ולוק. התחלה כל כך מקרטעת, שהייתי צריכה להתאפק לא לנטוש באמצע.
בתחילת הספר, הבוסית של אלי תופסת אותה כשהיא נתפסת מקיימת יחסי מין עם בן הזוג שלה בעבודה. התוצאה, פיטורים מהירים ובן זוג שעוזב אותה באותה נשימה. בלי כיוון ובלי עוגן, היא נוסעת לווגאס לחגוג את חתונת אחיה. שם, אחרי לילה מסחרר עם גבר מסתורי, היא מגלה שהבחור הוא לוק, השושבין של אחיה, ושאחיה כבר סידר לה מגורים זמניים ב"טירה" של לוק, עד שתמצא דירה ועבודה.
החלק הזה מרגיש כמו טראש קלאסי, כזה שלא מתאמץ אפילו להיות הגיוני. אלי היא דמות שלומיאלית, שעל כל צעד ושעל המציאות מפתיעה אותה. זה אמור לשעשע, אבל אותי זה לא.
באופן מפתיע, במחצית הספר משהו משתנה. כשהיא עוברת לגור עם לוק, הדמויות של אלי ולוק מתחילות להתפתח ולקבל נפח. לוק הוא שחקן פוטבול עם אובססיה לפרטיות. כמי שיש לו עבר כושל במערכות יחסים, הוא מסרב להתפתות להצעות של אלי, שרואה את העולם דרך משקפיים ורודות. במקום זה, הוא מסכים שתהפוך לאשת יחסי הציבור שלו, צעד שמוביל אותם למערכת יחסים טעונה, מורכבת, ולעיתים אפילו חיננית.
הספר מסתיים בקליף האנגר, ובמחצית השנייה שלו הוא הופך ליותר זורם ומעניין, בעיקר בזכות העובדה שהעלילה מקבלת בשר והכימיה שמתפתחת ביניהם. רק אל תצפו לרומן ספורט, אין כאן שום ספורט אלא אם שתי סצנות סקס עונות על ההגדרה. מדובר יותר ברומן יחסים בהמשכים, והסדרה כולה מתפרשת על פני חמישה ספרים קצרים, בני 100 עד 200 עמודים כל אחד, שבפועל יכלו להצטמצם לשני ספרים בלבד.
זה לא ספר שיכתוב מחדש את חוקי הז'אנר, אבל הוא כן מספק בידור קליל, במיוחד למי שמוכן לשרוד פתיחה מקרטעת בשביל חצי שני מהנה יותר.

Home Game kicks off Ellie and Luke’s story with such a bumpy start that I half-expected to hear the screech of brakes.
At the start, Ellie’s boss catches her having sex with her boyfriend… at work. The result: immediate firing and a breakup in the same breath. With no direction and nothing holding her back, she heads to Vegas to celebrate her brother’s wedding. There, after a whirlwind night with a mysterious man, she discovers he is Luke – her brother’s groomsman – and that her brother has already arranged for her to stay temporarily in Luke’s “castle” until she finds an apartment and a new job.
This part feels like classic trash, not even trying to be believable. Ellie is clumsy and almost entirely passive, stumbling from one event to another without taking control of her life. It’s supposed to be funny, but I found it mostly frustrating.
Surprisingly, things change halfway through. Once she moves in with Luke, the characters begin to take shape. Luke is a football player obsessed with his privacy, with a history of failed relationships. He refuses to give in to Ellie’s advances, instead agreeing that she should become his publicist. This leads to a charged, complex, and at times even charming dynamic.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, and its second half finally finds its voice. Their chemistry grows stronger, and the plot gains some substance. Just don’t expect a sports romance – apart from two sex scenes, there isn’t a single football play in sight. This is more of a serialized relationship romance, stretched across five short books, each 100–200 pages long. In reality, the whole story could have been told in two tighter volumes rather than being split into five.
It’s not a book that will rewrite the rules of the genre, but it does provide light entertainment for those willing to push through a clumsy, kitschy opening. The second half flows better, but don’t count on a literary touchdown this is more of a modest pass in the middle of the field.
