Hidden Hearts, הספר הראשון בסדרת Jade River Sanctuary, מביא עמו רעיון טוב: מקלט להצלת בעלי חיים כזירה לריפוי נפשי, חשיפת פצעים ישנים ואולי גם סיפור אהבה. אבל בין כוונה טובה לבין ביצוע מוצלח יש לפעמים תהום.
את הספר קיבלתי במסגרת STUFF UR KINDLE. ולמרות ההתלהבות שנרשמה בדירוגי הקוראים, התחושות שלי היו צוננות בהרבה.
במרכז העלילה עומדות הדמויות של ברנדי ואש. ברנדי בורחת ביום חתונתה. היא חושדת שבן זוגה בוגד בה עם אחותה. אם זה לא מספיק, היחסים שלה עם אמה ואחותה רעילים ברמות שמעלות תהייה למה לקח לה כל כך הרבה זמן לברוח. כשהיא מגיעה למקלט לבעלי חיים, המנוהל על ידי רוז, היא מקווה להתחיל מחדש. אך קשה להשתקם כשאת נושאת על גבך את כאב ההשפלה שלא שוכך.
ברנדי פוגשת את אש, שחי ועובד במקלט. הוא רק ביקש מקום שקט, הרחק מהעולם ומהמשפחה שלו. לפי הרמזים בעלילה, הוא אסיר משוחרר. אמנם לא ברור מה היה הפשע שביצע, אך ברור שהוא מנסה לשקם את חייו בשקט ובענייניות. הוא מסייע לרוז בניהול המקום: מהשיפוצים ועד ניהול החשבונות, תחום שרוז מתקשה בו מאוד.
היחסים בין השניים נבנים על חשדנות הדדית ובהתאם לתבנית העלילתית של "ניגודים נמשכים". יש פוטנציאל. אבל הוא נזנח לטובת מהלך צפוי: סצנות רגשיות דרמטיות מדי ותגובות שלא תמיד מרגישות אמינות. באיזשהו שלב, אש מתנהג כמו שחקנית ראשית בדרמה הוליוודית. זה מנטרל את העוקץ מהכאב האותנטי שיכול היה להיות שם.
מה שעוד הקשה על החוויה הוא הביצוע הקולי בפורמט וירטואלי של Audible. הקריינות נשמעת ממוחשבת: חסרת עומק, טונאליות רגשית ומקצב טבעי. כשספר מבוסס על מטען רגשי כבד, קריינות וירטואלית שטוחה פשוט לא עושה את העבודה.
ויש גם נקודת אור: דמותה של רוז, האישה שמנהלת את המקלט, מעניינת ומורכבת יותר מהדמויות הראשיות. אמנם היא ברקע. אך נדמה שהיא מחזיקה את המקום, ואולי גם את הסדרה כולה, בבחירות הצוות ובנוכחות העיקשת שלה.
בסיכומו של דבר, Hidden Hearts הוא ספר בינוני. הרעיון מעניין. המקום קסום. יש ניצוצות של עומק. אבל הביצוע לא מצליח להמריא. אולי הספרים הבאים בסדרה יצליחו לממש את הפוטנציאל הגלום ברוז ובמקלט. בינתיים, זו הייתה חוויית קריאה כמו לטייל בשביל יפה שמתעקש להוביל אותך שוב ושוב לאותו מקום.

Hidden Hearts, the first book in the Jade River Sanctuary series, introduces a compelling concept: an animal rescue sanctuary as a backdrop for emotional healing, buried trauma, and perhaps a love story. However, between good intentions and strong execution, there's often a significant gap.
I received the book through STUFF UR KINDLE, and despite the glowing ratings it received, I didn’t share the same enthusiasm.
The story centers on Brandy and Ash. Brandy flees on her wedding day, suspecting her fiancé is cheating on her with her sister. If that’s not enough, her relationship with both her sister and mother is deeply toxic. It makes one wonder why it took her so long to leave. She arrives at the animal sanctuary run by Rose, hoping to start fresh. But rebuilding yourself isn’t simple when you carry shame and pain as a permanent scar.
At the sanctuary, Brandy meets Ash. He’s just looking for peace and distance from his past and his family. From what I could tell, Ash is an ex-convict, although it’s never made clear what crime he committed. He’s trying to rebuild his life quietly and responsibly. He helps Rose run the sanctuary, from repairs to bookkeeping, an area in which Rose is struggling.
The relationship between Brandy and Ash is built on mutual suspicion, in classic "opposites attract" fashion. The book had potential. Unfortunately, it veers into predictability: overly dramatic scenes, emotional overreactions, and character shifts that feel forced. At one point, Ash acts like an Oscar-winning drama queen, and it strips away the sincerity the story could have delivered.
To make matters worse, the audiobook narration, performed by a virtual voice, falls flat. The computerized delivery lacks emotion, tone, and nuance. When a book relies on emotional weight, a flat, robotic narration doesn’t cut it.
One bright spot is the character of Rose. Though more in the background, she comes across as more layered and grounded than either of the leads. She seems to hold the sanctuary and possibly the entire series together.
In summary, Hidden Hearts is an average read. The concept is interesting, the setting has charm, and there are glimmers of emotional depth. But the execution never quite takes off. Perhaps the following books in the series will realize the promise that Rose and the sanctuary hold. For now, it’s like walking down a lovely path that insists on circling back to the same view.
