בספר השני בסדרת The Brides of Purple Heart Ranch ממשיכה שייני ג’ונסון לשלב בין רומנטיקה מתקתקה לבין סיפורם של לוחמים פצועים החוזרים מן המלחמה ומנסים למצוא לעצמם בית חדש, משפחה ואיזון רגשי. הסדרה בנויה סביב רעיון מקורי: כל ספר מתמקד בחייל משוחרר עם פגיעה גופנית אחרת, ושם הספר מתייחס אליה ישירות. לכן לא מפתיע שבספר Hand Over His Heart, הפגיעה היא בלב.

בעוד שהספר הראשון בסדרה, On His Bended Knee, הציע דרמה אמינה ומרגשת יותר, Hand Over His Heart נוטה יותר לכיוון הרומנטיקה הרכה, עם דגש על קלישאות של “אהבה כנגד כל הסיכויים”. יש בו רגעים יפים, במיוחד כאשר הדמויות מתמודדות עם שאלות של גבורה, אחריות והיכולת להמשיך לחיות למרות מגבלה פיזית, אך תחושת ההחמצה ניכרת.

The series is built on a creative idea: each book focuses on a different soldier whose injury defines the narrative. As the title suggests, this time the heart is at stake.
Fern lives under constant threat: shrapnel lodged near his heart during combat in Afghanistan could kill him at any moment. For that reason, he believes love and marriage are out of reach. Though he lives on the ranch designed to host wounded veterans and their spouses, he feels like an outsider. When he meets Eva – a young woman raising her younger siblings on her own and facing the loss of her home – he offers a practical solution: marry one of his fellow soldiers. But life, as always, has other plans.
The story shifts between moments of warmth and family responsibility, and a romance that struggles to flourish under the shadow of fear and death. And here lies the book’s weakness: the accelerated pace of Fern and Eva’s relationship feels unconvincing. The narrative excuse that Fern may die any second provides urgency, but it is too flimsy to carry the weight of a love story that could have been far stronger.
While the first book in the series delivered a more powerful and convincing drama, Hand Over His Heart leans toward softer romance, relying more heavily on clichés of “love against all odds.” Still, there are poignant moments, especially when the characters confront questions of courage, responsibility, and the will to persevere despite physical limitations.
