השאלתי את הספר במסגרת אודיובל פלוס למרות שיש לי גם עותק בעברית הקשבתי לו באנגלית.
הספר הוא אחד מספרי הקלאסיקה שרציתי לקרוא מזמן אבל לא יצא לי וכשהגעתי אליו סוף סוף לא הבנתי על מה המהומה.
הספר הוא תיאור של חברה עתידנית שבה בני אדם נולדים לתוך קאסטות לאחר שהעוברים מטופלים באופן כימי.
המעמד הנחות הוא המעמד הפועל והוא מכונה אפסילון והמעמד העליון הוא מעמד אלפא. רק 30% מהנקבות במעמד אלפא פוריות ויולדות ילשים אבל בחברה החדשה אין מושגים כמו אהבה, זוגיות או לנצח. המפגשים בין בני האדם הם לצרכי סיפוק מיני. תיסכולים ודיכאון מטופלים ע"י סם שמכונה סומה והמושגים אהבה וזוגיות הם מושגים שנכחדו ונחשבים מוקצים כמו גם המושגים אמא ואבא.
זהו סיפרו של ג'ון שנולד לאם מקסטת אלפא שחייה בין הפראיים. אימו של ג'ון לימדה אותו לקרוא ומושפע מכתבי שייקספיר מושגיו על אהבה, זוגיות והתא המשפחתי שונים באופן קיצוני מהמושגים המקובלים בחברה הדיסאוטופית המודרנית.
כשג'ון מגיע לחברה המודרנית הוא מוצג לראווה כמו בקירקס אבל עד מהרה הוא מסרב להופיע בחברה. מושגיו על זוגיות ואהבה והפער שבין תפיסותיו למציאות החדשה אליה נקלע מובילים אותו לשקוע בדיכאון עד לטרגדיה שבסיום הספר.
חלקים מהספר היו לא מעניינים. הספר נע לאט ורק במחציתו מתחיל עיניין אמיתי בעלילה.
סך הכל התאכזבתי. ציפיתי למשהו אחר. חלקים מהספר נראו לי תלושים וחלקים אחרי הציגו סצנות שהיו בעיניי אכזריות מיותרת לשמה. הדמות של ג'ון היתה מלודרמטית בצורה חריגה והדמות של אימו מנותקת ותלושה בצורות לא אמיתיות. בצירוף העובדה שהעלילה לא היתה מעניינת במחצית הראשונה של הספר, נתתי לו 3 כוכבים שגם זה לעגל את הפינות של המרובע.

I borrowed Brave New World through Audible Plus, although I also own a physical copy in Hebrew. I listened to it in English.
This is one of those classic books I had meant to read for a long time, and when I finally did. I honestly didn’t understand what all the fuss was about.
The book describes a futuristic society where humans are born into rigid castes, their embryos chemically treated in advance. The lowest class, Epsilon, comprises manual laborers, while the highest, Alpha, encompasses the intellectual elite. Only 30% of Alpha females are fertile, and although they bear children, there are no concepts like love, partnership, or "forever." Human encounters serve purely for sexual satisfaction. Emotional distress is treated with a drug called Soma, and words like “mother” and “father” are considered shameful relics of a forgotten past.
The story follows John, born to an Alpha woman who lived among the "savages." She taught him to read, and under the influence of Shakespeare, John's notions of love, family, and fidelity are entirely out of sync with the values of the dystopian society in which he lives. When John is brought into the modern world, he's put on display like a circus curiosity. But he soon refuses to participate in the spectacle. His ideals clash painfully with the sterile, numbed world around him, leading him into depression and, ultimately, tragedy.
Parts of the book were dull. The plot moves slowly and only becomes engaging about halfway through. Overall, I was disappointed. I had expected something else entirely. Certain scenes felt disconnected; others struck me as pointlessly cruel. John’s character was excessively melodramatic, and his mother’s portrayal felt hollow and implausible. Given how little I enjoyed the first half, I gave the book three stars, and that’s being generous.
