Beautiful Nightmare הוא בדיוק מה שהוא מבטיח להיות: נובלה קצרה, קלילה, ושובבה, שלא מתאמצת לגעת בשום עומק רגשי מעבר למה שהעלילה מחייבת. וזה לגיטימי לחלוטין, כל עוד הקורא יודע בדיוק למה הוא נכנס.
הגיבורה, ג'מה, היא שדונת שיתוק שינה בתקופת חניכה. תפקיד שמצופה להיות מפחיד, אפל, מאיים. בפועל היא ההפך הגמור: מביכה, מתוקה, מודאגת מהתפקוד שלה ברשימות המטלות השדיות. היא נכשלת ביצירת פחד, נזהרת מכל טעות, ולמעשה גם אינה חובבת את טעמו של פחד אנושי. זה כבר אומר הרבה על סוג הנובלה שמחכה לנו כאן.
במילים אחרות, מדובר בשדונת שלא היתה עוברת אפילו ראיון עבודה בסיסי בגיהנום.
כאשר ג'מה מקבלת סוף סוף את "הקורבן" הראשון שלה, קיילב, הכול מתפרק באלגנטיות משעשעת. במקום לצרוח, לקפוא, או להיבהל, קיילב מגיב בהערכה מופתעת. מבחינתו, השדונת עם העור הוורדרד והקרניים החמודות היא יותר פנטזיה מאשר סיוט.
משם הדרך ברורה: פחות פחד, יותר תשוקה. פחות אימה, יותר פלרטוט. וכללי הגיהנום? מתמוססים מרגע לרגע.
ג'מה כתובה היטב: יש בה שילוב של חוסר ביטחון, חרדה קומית, ותמימות כמעט אנושית. היא מרגישה כמו מתלמדת במחלקת אימה שלא מבינה איך הגיעה לשם. מצד שני, קיילב מתגלה כדמות חביבה ורכה, אדם שרוצה להכיר אותה באמת ולוודא שהיא חשה בנוח עם מה שמתפתח ביניהם. זוגיות בריאה, אפילו אם אחד מהם אמור להיות מפלצת.
אבל כאן מגיע המקום שבו הנובלה מפספסת: רוב העלילה מתמקדת בסקס.
לא בעלילה על־טבעית, לא בקונפליקט, לא בעולם השדים שהובטח בכריכה. רק במפגש הארוך והחוזר בין ג'מה לקיילב.
הטוויסט בסיום מרגיש קצת מאולץ, כאילו נוסף כדי להצדיק מבנה של נובלה, ולא כי הסיפור באמת דרש אותו. זה לא הורס את החוויה, אבל זה גם לא מחזק אותה.
בסופו של דבר, Beautiful Nightmare הוא סיפור נחמד. חמוד.
לא מותיר חותם, לא מייצר עולם, לא מנסה להיות יותר ממה שהוא: פנטזיית ליל־כל־קדושים רומנטית־לוהטת שאפשר לקרוא בבת אחת, לחייך, ולעבור הלאה.
אם מחפשים עלילה עשירה, עומק או בניית דמויות משמעותית, זה לא הספר.
אם מחפשים שעה של שעשוע קליל, עם שדית שמעדיפה תאווה על פחד וקורבן שמעדיף סקס על צרחות – זה בהחלט יספק את הסחורה.

Beautiful Nightmare is precisely what it promises to be. A short, light, slightly mischievous novella that has no ambition to reach emotional depths beyond what the plot requires. And honestly, that is perfectly fine, as long as the reader knows what they are signing up for.
Gemma, our heroine, is a baby sleep-paralysis demon in training. A role that, in theory, should be dark, intimidating, and dripping in dread. In practice, she is the opposite. Awkward, sweet, worried about her performance in the infernal task list. She is terrible at instilling fear, nervous about every misstep, and, frankly, not a fan of the taste of human terror. That alone tells you what kind of story you are about to read.
In short, she is the type of demon who wouldn’t make it through even the most basic job interview in hell.
When Gemma finally gets her first “victim”, Caleb, everything unravels most entertainingly. Instead of screaming, freezing, or panicking, Caleb reacts with amused curiosity. To him, the pink-skinned, horned little demon is far more of a fantasy than a nightmare.
From there, the direction is clear. Less fear, more desire. Less horror, more flirtation. The rules of hell melt one by one.
Gemma is genuinely well written: a mix of insecurity, comic anxiety, and almost human innocence. She feels like an intern accidentally assigned to the Department of Nightmares. Caleb, in turn, is soft, kind, and genuinely invested in making sure she is comfortable with whatever happens between them. A surprisingly healthy dynamic, considering one of them is supposed to be a monster.
But here lies the novella’s fundamental limitation: most of it is sex.
Not world-building, not supernatural tension, not a meaningful conflict. Just an extended encounter between Gemma and Caleb.
The twist at the end feels slightly forced, as if placed there to justify the structure of a novella rather than because the story demanded it. It does not ruin the experience, but it does not elevate it either.
In the end, Beautiful Nightmare is simply a pleasant read. Cute, sweet, and forgettable in a harmless way. It does not build a world. It does not aim for depth. It does not try to be more than a Halloween-themed romantic fantasy you can finish in one sitting, smile at, and move on.
If you are looking for rich plot, emotional resonance, or meaningful character arcs, this is not the book.
If you want an hour of playful fun, with a demon who prefers lust over fear and a human who prefers sex over screaming, it absolutely delivers.
