“Apprentice to the Villain” הוא הספר השני בסדרת “Assistant to the Villain” מאת האנה ניקול מאהרר, וממשיך את סיפורה של איווי סייג’ – העוזרת שהפכה לחלק בלתי נפרד מעולמו של הנבל. הספר הראשון הסתיים בקליף-האנגר מטלטל, שהשאיר אותנו דרוכים לקריאת ההמשך, והספר השני מספק חוויה עשירה ומורכבת יותר.

איווי מוצאת את עצמה פצועה ובודדה לאחר חטיפתו של הנבל בידי המשמר המלכותי. נחושה בדעתה להציל אותו, היא חוזרת לטירתו ומצליחה להוציא לפועל תוכנית חילוץ מבריקה. אבל החילוץ הוא רק ההתחלה – הקסם בממלכה הולך ונעלם, וההשפעה המכריעה של היעלמותו ניכרת בטריסטן.

העלילה אינה מתמקדת רק בפוליטיקה ובמאבקי כוח בממלכת רנדון, אלא גם במסעה האישי של איווי, שמגלה בתוכה עוצמות חדשות. כבר לא מדובר בעוזרת חביבה ותמימה, אלא באישה שמתחילה להבין את מקומה בעולמו של הנבל – ואולי אפילו בעמדת כוח משלה. איווי אוהבת להיות באור הזרקורים ואת הצדדים האפלים שלה.

בספר זה, איווי אינה רק דמות תמימה שנקלעה לעולם של הנבל – היא לוקחת יוזמה, מגלה את כוחה ואף מתחילה ליהנות ממנו. ככל שטריסטן נחלש, היא מתחזקת ולא ניתן לעצור אותה.

הנבל עצמו נחשף כדמות מורכבת ומיוסרת, ובספר זה הוא כבר אינו “האיום” הגדול, אלא דווקא מי שנמצא על סף קריסה. מערכת היחסים בין איווי לטריסטן נבנית באיטיות, מלאת מתח ורגעים אינטימיים, שמציגים את המשיכה ההדדית, גם אם אינה מתממשת במלואה.

אחד השינויים המרכזיים בספר השני הוא המעבר לנקודות מבט נוספות – לא רק של איווי וטריסטן, אלא גם של דמויות משנה כמו בקי וגדעון. ההחלטה הזו מעניקה לסיפור רבדים נוספים, מאפשרת לקוראים להבין את הדינמיקה הפוליטית והכוחות הפועלים בממלכה, אך לעיתים היא באה על חשבון התפתחות האינטימיות בין הדמויות הראשיות.

למרות שהרחבת העולם מוסיפה עניין ומורכבות, היו רגעים בהם דמויות המשנה תפסו מקום רב מדי, ולעיתים הפריעו להתקדמות הרומנטית בין טריסטן ואיווי. נראה לי שלא באמת היה צורך בכל כך הרבה הפרעות בכל פעם שנראה שהם סוף סוף מתקרבים.

אחד הרעיונות המרכזיים בספר הוא חקירת הגבולות שבין טוב לרע. בעוד שבספר הראשון התחלנו להבין שטריסטן הוא הרבה יותר מאשר “נבל” פשוט, כאן הסופרת לוקחת את זה צעד קדימה – הוא לא רק אדם מורכב, אלא גם דמות מוסרית בדרכה שלו.

ההפתעה האמיתית טמונה בדמותה של איווי, שמגלה צדדים אפלים בתוכה. היא מתחילה להידמות לנבל, מוכנה לעשות את מה שצריך כדי לנצח, גם אם זה אומר לחרוג מהגבולות המוסריים שהציבה לעצמה בעבר.

בנוסף, הספר שובר את הדיכוטומיה הקלאסית של “הטוב” מול “הרע” על ידי הצגת המלך – הדמות שאמורה לייצג צדק – כשליט מניפולטיבי וחסר רחמים. ייתכן שהנבל האמיתי של הסיפור לא לבוש בשחור, אלא דווקא בכתר מוזהב.

בניגוד לקצב המהיר וההומור השנון שהיו דומיננטיים יותר בספר הראשון, כאן הסופרת מתמקדת ביצירת עולם מורכב יותר ופחות ברגעים קלילים. זהו ספר בעל עלילה מתונה יותר והוא הופך לקצבי בחלקו האחרון, אבל עדיין ניתן למצוא ניצוצות של שנינות והומור ברגעים המשותפים של איווי וטריסטן.

הסדרה צפויה להסתיים עם הספר השלישי שצפוי לצאת באוגוסט 2025. אחרי ההתפתחויות בספר השני, הציפייה נמצאת בשיאה. האם העלילה תקבל סיום מספק? האם סוף סוף נקבל את רגעי הרומנטיקה שחיכינו להם? או שמא מחכות לנו הפתעות נוספות?

It continues the story of Evie Sage, the assistant who has become inseparable from the Villain’s world. The first book concluded with a jaw-dropping cliffhanger, leaving readers eager for more, and the second installment offers a richer and more complex experience.

Evie finds herself injured and alone after the royal guards capture the Villain. Determined to save him, she returns to his castle and successfully executes an ingenious escape plan. However, the rescue is just the beginning—the magic in the kingdom is waning, and its loss is taking a heavy toll on Tristan.

The plot focuses on the political struggles and power battles in the kingdom of Randon and Evie’s journey as she discovers new strengths within herself. She is no longer merely a sweet and innocent assistant but a woman who starts understanding her place in the Villain’s world—perhaps even a position of power in her own right. Evie takes pleasure in stepping into the spotlight and embracing her darker side.

In this book, Evie is no longer the naive girl who stumbled into the Villain’s world; she takes initiative, discovers her power, and even enjoys it. As Tristan weakens, she grows stronger and becomes unstoppable.

The Villain himself is revealed as a tortured and complex character, no longer the “greatest threat” but someone on the brink of collapse. The relationship between Evie and Tristan develops slowly, filled with tension and quiet, intimate moments that showcase their undeniable attraction—even if it never fully materializes.

One of the most significant changes in the second book is the shift to multiple perspectives—not just those of Evie and Tristan but also of side characters like Becky and Gideon. This decision adds layers to the story, allowing readers to grasp the political dynamics and forces at play in the kingdom. However, at times, it comes at the cost of developing the intimacy between the main characters.

While the expanded worldbuilding adds interest and complexity, there are moments when the side characters take up too much space, sometimes even overshadowing Tristan and Evie. Did we need so many interruptions just as they were finally about to get closer?

One of the book’s central themes is the exploration of the blurred lines between good and evil. While the first book suggested that Tristan was more than a stereotypical villain, this installment pushes it further—he is not only a complex individual but also a genuinely moral character in his own right.

The genuine surprise lies in Evie, who embraces her darker tendencies. She resembles the Villain more than ever, prepared to do whatever it takes to win—even if it means crossing the moral boundaries she once held sacred.

Furthermore, the book dismantles the traditional dichotomy of “good” versus “evil” by portraying the King—who is meant to symbolize justice—as a cunning and ruthless ruler. Perhaps the story’s real villain isn’t cloaked in black but instead wears a golden crown.

Unlike the fast-paced and witty nature of the first book, this time, the author emphasizes creating a more intricate world, with fewer lighthearted moments. The pacing is generally slower but accelerates toward the climax. Nevertheless, moments of humor and sharp dialogue in the interactions between Evie and Tristan continue to be a highlight.

The series is set to conclude with the third book, which is expected to be released in August 2025. After the events in this installment, anticipation is at an all-time high. Will the story reach a satisfying conclusion? Will we finally get the romance we’ve been waiting for? Or are there more surprises in store?

Final Verdict – Should You Read It?

🔹 If you’re looking for a fast-paced romance, you might find the slow burn frustrating.
🔹 If you enjoy morally gray stories, intricate politics, and evolving and changing characters, this book is absolutely for you.

I loved the book; I thought it was even better than the first in the series, and I will undoubtedly continue with the next one.
