A Deadly Education מאת נעמי נוביק זכה לאהדה נרחבת, ואני, בניגוד לרבים, פתחתי אותו בתחושת בלבול וחוסר אוריינטציה. התחלת הספר מעורפלת וזורקת את הקורא לתוך האירועים, כשהדבר היחיד שברור הוא שהעלילה מתרחשת בבית ספר. לאט, מתפענח העולם קסום שבית הספר Scholomance מציג. הקורא לומד להכיר את חוקי הקסם, הכישופים והדינמיקה בין הדמויות. ההתאקלמות דרשה מאמץ, והרגשתי שהכניסה לעולם הזה הייתה אטית ומתסכלת לפרקים.
העלילה עוקבת אחר גלדריאל, או בקיצור אל, נערה צעירה עם כוחות אדירים ואפלים, שלומדת במוסד קסמים מסוכן במיוחד: בית ספר ללא מורים, שבו תלמידים מותקפים על ידי מפלצות קסם, והישרדות היא עניין יומיומי. Scholomance אינו מציע חופשות, אין בו חצר משחקים או טקסי סיום נוצצים – זה מוסד אכזרי שמכשף את תלמידיו דרך סכנה מתמדת, ומי שלא מספיק חכם או חזק, פשוט לא יוצא ממנו חי.
אל נולדה עם פוטנציאל אפל במיוחד , כזה שיכול להשמיד ערים שלמות , והיא עושה כל שביכולתה לא להיסחף אחר הכוחות האדירים שזורמים בה. היא מבודדת, נושכת, עוקצנית, ולא מעוניינת כלל באהדת הסובבים אותה. אבל כשאוריון לייק, התלמיד הפופולרי שמקדיש את חייו להצלת אחרים, מתערב שוב ושוב בענייניה, נרקם ביניהם קשר מוזר, מתוח וטעון. הקשר הזה, יותר מכל דבר אחר, הוא הלב הפועם של הספר.
כשכבר הצלחתי להסתנכרן עם הקצב והעולם שהספר מציע, נהניתי. ישנם רגעים שבהם אל מציגה תושייה, חוש הומור ציני וביקורת פנימית על עולם הקוסמים ועל התנהלות בית הספר. החלק המרכזי של הספר מצליח להחזיק מתח, לפתח עולם עשיר, ולהעניק עומק לדמות הראשית. אבל אז מגיע הסיום , ושוב שקעתי לתחושת בלבול. תפניות עלילתיות חפוזות, מעגלים שלא נסגרים, ואירועים שהם הכנה לספר הבא , אבל לא סוגרים את הספר הזה.
A Deadly Education הוא התחלה לסדרה עם פוטנציאל אדיר. זוהי פתיחה מעניינת, אך לא נטולת פגמים. מי שיאהב את אל כבר מהעמודים הראשונים ימצא הרבה מה לאהוב גם בהמשך. אני, לעומת זאת, מצאתי את עצמי כל הזמן על הגדר : מתעניינת, אבל לא נסחפת. מרותקת, אך לא לגמרי משוכנעת. אולי הספר הבא יצליח להמריא באמת.

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik has received widespread acclaim, but unlike many others, I opened it with a sense of disorientation and confusion. The beginning is murky, throwing the reader straight into the action, with only one thing clear: the story takes place in a school. Slowly, the magical world of Scholomance begins to unfold. The reader is introduced to the rules of magic, spells, and the dynamics between characters, but it takes effort. I felt that adjusting to the pace and logic of this world was slow and, at times, frustrating.
The story follows Galadriel — or El, for short — a young girl with immense and dangerous power, studying at a deadly magic school: a teacher-less institution where magical monsters constantly attack students and survival is a daily battle. Scholomance doesn’t offer vacations, playgrounds, or glamorous graduation ceremonies — it’s a brutal place that trains its students through perpetual danger. You don't make it out alive if you’re not smart or strong enough.
El was born with a particularly dark potential — enough to destroy entire cities — and she does everything she can to not give in to it. She’s isolated, prickly, sarcastic, and has no interest in winning anyone’s approval. But when Orion Lake, the popular golden boy who spends his days saving others, keeps meddling in her life, a strange and tense bond begins to form. That relationship, more than anything else, becomes the emotional core of the book.
Once I finally synchronized with the pace and rhythm of the world, I started to enjoy it. There are moments where El shows cleverness, dry wit, and a sharply critical eye toward the magical system and school structure. The middle section of the novel holds up well, rich in tension, detailed in world-building, and layered in its character development. But then comes the ending, and again I felt confused. Abrupt plot twists, unresolved arcs, and events meant to set up the sequel, but not to conclude this book in its own right.
A Deadly Education opens a series with enormous potential. It’s an intriguing introduction, but not without flaws. Readers who connect with El from the first pages will likely find much to love ahead. As for me, I remained on the fence throughout: engaged, but never fully immersed. Curious, but unconvinced. Maybe the next book will be the one to truly cast its spell.
