בעבר יצא לי לקרוא הרבה ספרים מז’אנר הפנטזיה האורבנית. זה ז’אנר שאני מאוד אוהבת, אבל הוא סובל מסופרים שנוטים לכתוב מאות של עמודים ולפרסם סדרות ארוכות, בלתי נגמרות (תרתי משמע – לפעמים צריך להמתין לספר הבא בסידרה שנים). לכן, היתה תקופה שזנחתי אותו. לאחרונה, בעקבות פרסום שני ספרי מקור שמשלבים בין פנטזיה אורבנית ואלמנטים של פנטזיה יהודית, התעוררה סקרנותי וחזרתי לקרוא.

“ניצוצות” מאת מיכל בסן ואור רוט יצא בהוצאה עצמית. אחרי שקראתי אותו, שמחתי שהסופרות לקחו את הסיכון והוציאו אותו.

מה קורה כששיפוצניק מחיפה מוצא את עצמו בלב מזימה קסומה שבה מעורבות ליליות, מאפיה בהאית ומשפחת ליליות ירושלמית עם כוחות מסתוריים? התוצאה היא רומן פנטזיה אורבנית חדשני ומרתק, ששואב השראה מהמיסטיקה היהודית ומציב את הקסם בלב הרחובות המוכרים של ישראל.

שחר, שיפוצניק עם קשרים מפוקפקים בעולם הקסם, רגיל לקחת עבודות מוזרות – גם כשלא תמיד משלמים לו עליהן. אבל כשהוא פוגש את סהר, לילית נמלט ממשפחה ירושלמית עתיקה, הוא נסחף למסע מסוכן בין ערי ישראל וסמטאות ירושלים במרדף גורלי שיציל את חייו של סהר.

אחד האלמנטים הבולטים ב“ניצוצות” שמציע לקורא שילוב ייחודי בין עולם הפנטזיה המוכר לבין המיסטיקה היהודית הוא שלא נמצא בספר בספר ערפדים או מכשפים – כאן הקסם מגיע ממקורות אחרים: ליליות, טקסים עתיקים, ומיתוסים ששזורים בתוך העולם המודרני והמוכר.

בנוסף, הדינמיקה בין שחר וסהר היא אחת מנקודות החוזק של הספר. הדמויות עגולות, מלאות עומק, ומערכת היחסים ביניהן מתפתחת באופן אמין וסוחף. אהבתי את הרומנטיקה העדינה והמרומזת בין שני הגיבורים.

הספר מספק עלילה מותחת – אבל לעיתים פרטים מהותיים להבנה נסתרים מדי.

קצב האירועים מהיר, העלילה מסקרנת, והספר בהחלט מצליח לשמור על מתח. עם זאת, הניסיון לא לחשוף מוקדם מדי את הגורמים שרודפים את סהר משאיר את הקורא בעלטה לפרקי זמן ממושכים. כאשר מגיע הגילוי הגדול, הוא מוצג בצורה מעט מרומזת מדי, כך שלעיתים נדרשת קריאה חוזרת כדי להבין את ההשלכות במלואן.

אם אתם מחפשים ספר פנטזיה שלא מתרחש בניו יורק או לונדון, ולא מתרחש בתקופה מקבילה לימי הביניים אלא בלב חיפה וירושלים, זה בהחלט ספר ששווה לקרוא.

I’ve read quite a bit of urban fantasy over the years—it’s a genre I love. However, it does have its pitfalls, primarily authors who write hundreds of pages and stretch their stories into endless series (sometimes quite literally; waiting years for the next installment can be frustrating). At some point, I drifted away from it. Recently, however, with the release of two original novels that blend urban fantasy with elements of Jewish mysticism, my curiosity was rekindled, and I found myself diving back in.

Nitzotzot by Michal Bassen and Or Roth was published independently. After reading it, I was pleased that the authors took the risk of sharing it with the world.

What happens when a handyperson from Haifa becomes entangled in a magical conspiracy involving Liliths, the Bahá’í mafia, and a powerful Lilith family from Jerusalem? The outcome is a fresh and captivating urban fantasy novel that draws inspiration from Jewish mysticism and places magic in the heart of familiar Israeli streets.

Shahar, a fixer with questionable ties to the magical underworld, is accustomed to taking on peculiar jobs—regardless of whether he gets compensated for them. However, when he encounters Sahar, a Lilith fleeing from an ancient Jerusalemite family, he is drawn into a dangerous journey through Israel’s cities and the alleyways of Jerusalem in a desperate effort to save Sahar’s life.

One of Nitzotzot’s most striking elements is its seamless blend of urban fantasy and Jewish mysticism. The novel doesn’t depend on familiar tropes like vampires or witches; instead, magic emerges from entirely different sources: Liliths, ancient rituals, and myths intricately woven into the modern and familiar world.

Another strong point is the dynamic between Shahar and Sahar. The characters are well-developed and full of depth, and their relationship evolves naturally and immersively. I particularly enjoyed the subtle and understated romantic tension between the two protagonists.

The book moves quickly, the plot is engaging, and it effectively maintains a sense of suspense throughout. However, to avoid revealing too much too soon about the forces pursuing Sahar, the reader is sometimes left in the dark for extended periods. When the significant revelation finally arrives, it is somewhat ambiguous, requiring close reading (and occasionally some backtracking) to understand its significance fully.

Ultimately, Nitzotzot offers a fresh and original perspective on urban fantasy, featuring compelling characters, a richly developed world, and a captivating mix of Jewish mysticism. For those already familiar with it, the book deepens and enriches the realm of Jewish mysticism. At the same time, for newcomers, it serves as an inviting gateway into a world of mystery and depth. Beyond its gripping plot, Nitzotzot pays tribute to Jewish mythology, proudly placing it alongside the renowned mythologies that have long influenced modern fantasy literature.

Suppose you’re looking for a fantasy novel that takes place outside of New York or London and deviates from traditional medieval-inspired settings, instead unfolding in the heart of Haifa and Jerusalem. In that case, this is a book worth reading.

And as the book ends, one question remains—when’s the sequel coming? I’m already waiting!
