רומן רומנטי היסטורי המתרחש באנגליה הויקטוריאנית בתקופה שבה נשים נלחמו על הזכויות הפוליטיות והאזרחיות שלהן. הוא מתיימר לעסוק בפערים מגדריים ומעמדיים. היישום דיי בינוני והחל ממחצית הספר לא רק שהעלילה נגררת, היא גם לא מעניינת.
לאחר שאביה נפטר, אנאבל, בתו היפה והרווקה של כומר, נאלצת לעבור לבית דודה ובתמורה לקורת הגג שהיא מקבלת לעסוק בעבודות בית (בקיצור בתמורה לקורת גג היא משרתת).
בשלב מסוים, היא מרגישה שמיצתה את רעיון עבודות הבית והיא מגישה בקשת לימודים לאוניברסיטה וכך היא זוכה במלגת לימודים לאוקספורד וכתנאי למלגה היא נדרשת לעסוק בפעילות פוליטית ובתמיכה בתנועת הסופרג’יסטיות.
כך אנאבל פוגשת את סבסטיאן מונטגומרי, דוכס מקושר ורם מעלה שגויס על ידי מלכת אנגליה לסייע למפלגה השמרנית ברשות דיזראלי לנצח את הבחירות. אנאבל וחברותיה מנסות לגייס את הדוכס שמקושר פוליטית ועם יכולות כלכליות, לתמוך בעניין הסופרג’יסטי ולקדם אותו בבית הלורדים, בפועל הדוכס לא מוצא עניין בתנועה.
הוא כן מוצא עניין באנאבל, בתו של כומר עני. כמובן שהיא גם מוצאת בו עניין. רק שברור לשני הצדדים שהפערים בין המעמדות החברתיים שלהם, לא יאפשרו שום מערכת יחסים שהיא מעבר לרומן צדדי עד שהדוכס ימצא אישה במעמד מתאים יינשא לה ויוליד איתה את היורש המיוחל. הדוכס מסרב לכל אורך הספר להינשא לאנאבל ומחפש דרכים להפוך אותה לפילגשו. היא מאידך, כל כך פאסיבית שאחרי סצנת היעלבות, היא שוקלת ברצינות את האפשרות.
עד מחצית הספר חשבתי שאנקד את הספר ב 3.5 או 4 כוכבים ואז הוא גולש במדרון המסוכן לכיוון 2 כוכבים ונעצר שם.
לא הרגשתי שהדמויות מאוהבות. הם היו מוצפים בהורמונים של תשוקה, אבל לא מאוהבים.
בשלב מסויים די נקעה נפשי מהמחזוריות במערכת היחסים שלהם. אני מבינה שמרדף מתדלק את התשוקה אבל כמה אפשר?
היא רכה ורדרדה וזוהרת, הוא קשה גברי ומאוד שתלטני. לא אחת הוא משתמש בכוחו הגברי להכניע אותה. היא כמובן אוהבת להיות מוכנעת.
העניין הסופרג’יסטי מאוד שולי בספר הזה. אנאבל, איננה מהלוחמות הסופרג’יסטיות, היא גם לא מחוייבת למטרה שלהן. היא שם כי הן משלמות את המלגה שלה וכי היא חייבת להשתתף בפעילות הפוליטית שלהן. מאידך העניין של הדוכס מאוד מרכזי בספר. אנאבל ממש אובססיבית כלפיו. במחצית השניה של הספר היא למעשה כמעט ולא עוסקת בעיניין הסופרג’יסטי אלא שוקלת את הבעד ונגד להיות פילגש של הוד רוממותו הדוכס…כך שהעלילה גולשת לבנאליות הידועה.
סה”כ הקריאה בספר עד מחציתו היתה טובה במחצית השניה פחות. הרבה פחות.

A League of Extraordinary Women#1
The novel is set in Victorian England and explores women’s fight for their rights, addressing gender and social class inequality. However, the execution is mediocre, and the plot becomes tedious and uninteresting in the middle of the story.
Annabelle, an unmarried daughter of a priest, is compelled to relocate to her aunt’s residence following her father’s death. She must perform household chores in exchange for shelter, effectively serving as a maid.
After completing her housework, she decided to apply for a study program at the university. She received a scholarship to attend Oxford, stipulating her participation in political activities and advocating for the suffragist movement.
Annabelle and her friends meet Sebastian Montgomery, a noble duke with political and economic connections. The Queen of England recruited him to help the conservative party win the elections under Disraeli. Annabelle and her friends try to convince the duke to support the suffragist cause and speak on its behalf in the House of Lords. However, despite his political stature, the duke remains uninterested in the movement.
He fell for Annabelle, a poor priest’s daughter, and she returned his affection. Sadly, they both knew their social classes made a severe relationship impossible. He is a Duke and is expected to find a suitable wife and have an heir, yet he refuses to marry Annabelle and instead proposes a non-committal affair. On the other hand, Annabelle was very passive and even contemplated accepting the Duke’s insulting proposal.
At the halfway point, I initially thought the book deserved 3.5 or 4 stars, but it gradually declined and settled at two stars.
I didn’t sense any genuine love between the characters. They were driven by desire and not affection.
At a certain point, I felt emotionally detached from their relationship cycles. Although I understand that pursuing each other fuels passion, I wonder how much is too much.
She is soft, rosy, and glowing; he is rugged, masculine, and overpowering. More than once, he uses his male power to subdue her. Of course, she likes to be submissive.
The suffragist movement is scarcely addressed in the book. Annabelle, the main character, is not an engaged suffragist but participates due to the scholarship they give her and her duty to be involved in their political actions. Meanwhile, her infatuation with the duke is the story’s primary focus. In the latter part of the book, Annabelle becomes fixated on becoming the Duke’s mistress, leaving the suffragist issue in the background. This causes the plot to become foreseeable and uninspired.
The book’s first half was good, but the second half was disappointing.
קראתי את 3 הספרים שבסדרה, נהנתי מאוד. הם הרבה מעבר לרומן רומנטי, יש בהם אג’נדה ברורה וידע היסטורי רב. הייתי שמחה אילו היה המשך לסדרה.
אני אמשיך כמובן אם יצאו הספרים הבאים בסידרה, אבל הוא לא היה מה שציפיתי
