In his book "Anthony and Cleopatra," Goldsworthy attempts to separate fact from fiction, debunk the myths associated with Cleopatra's name, and make ancient history more accessible to the general public.

Cleopatra's origins remain largely shrouded in mystery. While some historians speculate that she was of Macedonian-Greek descent, others believe she was of Egyptian origin. What is certain is that her father, Ptolemy XII, was the last male king to rule over Egypt. He had five children, including Cleopatra.

The book follows the lives of Antony and Cleopatra in alternating chapters, starting with their ancestors. It delves into the internal power struggle that caused the collapse of the Roman Republic and highlights the roles played by Antony and Cleopatra in this struggle.

Goldsworthy's analysis highlights Cleopatra's reliance on Roman support and leadership. She rose to power at 18 and, according to Egyptian customs, had to marry her younger brother, as women were not allowed to rule alone. Due to the political situation and the need for continued assistance from the Romans, she got involved in the fierce struggle that was taking place in the Roman Empire at that time – a civil war that ended with Augustus' sole rule.

Antonius faced setbacks in his political career because of his ties to a foreign queen, which were seen as a weakness. Even with the backing and understanding of his troops, he didn't achieve much in politics and ultimately lost his money and social standing.

Determining whether Antony and Cleopatra's relationship was based on love or mutual utilitarianism is challenging. However, Cleopatra likely had both. The book suggests that Antony used their relationship to climb to the top of the Roman Empire and achieve his political goals. On the other hand, Cleopatra was an educated, attractive, and ambitious woman who had to navigate through a male-dominated and unequal world. She had charisma, and it appears that Antony was fascinated and submissive to her. Although they had three children together, they often spent long periods apart, making it difficult to ascertain the extent of Cleopatra's influence on internal events in the Roman Empire. The truth behind the myth, therefore, remains unclear.

I couldn't give the book a perfect rating because it lacks a clear focus on Cleopatra. She only appears in the context of the Roman Empire or her relationship with Anthony, and there isn't much information about her life when they were apart. In addition, the author seems to prefer the civil wars and military history of the empire, which takes up a significant part of the book.

This book is engaging and thought-provoking, with a dynamic flow that keeps the reader interested.
