הגעתי לספר כשעברית יצאו במבצע קידום לספר האודיו (האודיו של הספר הוא מה שמכונה אודיו סימנטי – שכולל הפקה שלמה של צלילים וקולות רקע כמו במציאות והם מלווים את הקריינים). פחות התחברתי לקונספט של אודיו סימנטי, הקריינות היתה מצוינת אבל הרגשתי שאפקטים הקוליים לא מוסיפים לחוויה שלי. הספר לעומת זאת , שבה את לבי.

רוני, בחורה שקטה ונחמדה שסובלת מחרדות ופחד מהחושך, נרתמת לסייע לשירה לכבוש את ליבו של אילון. רוני, שירה ואילון לומדים באותה הכיתה בתיכון. רוני ושירה לא מודעות לכך שאילון הוא לא כשאר הילדים בכיתה, הוא מכשף ומשתייך לשבט הצפון. אביו חבר במועצת המכשפים שכוללת את נציגי השבטים השונים: דרום, צפון, מזרח ומערב.

במהלך אחד מהמפגשים בין אילון ורוני, הוא מגלה לה שהוא מכשף ומהרגע הזה עולמה של רוני לא יחזור להיות כשהיה.

עולם המכשפים חבוי ואינו גלוי לבני אנוש רגילים. כאשר אילון מספר לרוני שהוא מכשף, הוא פותח בפניה צוהר אל העולם שחבוי מפניה. במקביל מישהו מנסה בכל כוחו לפגוע ברוני וביחסים שלה עם אילון. מישהו חזק והחלטי שמתחיל לרדוף את החבורה שאליה רוני, אילון ושירה משתייכים, אבל, בעיקר את רוני.

החבורה, מחליטה לגלות מי רודף את רוני וכך בדרך אל הגילוי, הם יוצאים למסעות מאתגרים בעולם הכשפים.

כשרכשתי את הספר, לא הייתי מודעת לכך שהספר אינו סגור והוא כנראה חלק מסידרה. הספר מסתיים בקליף האגר רציני שמשאיר את הקורא תלויי ותוהה מה יקרה בעתיד של הדמויות. הספר השני בסידרה טרם יצא.

הפרקים מסופרים מנקודות מבט שונות של הדמויות שחוות את המסע ואת האירועים בצורות שונות. לכל דמות ישנו קול מובחן, יחד עם זאת מאחר שמדובר בנערים ונערות בגיל 17, אין בקולות האלה את העומק והבגרות ולפעמים הם כולם נשמעים אותו הדבר. הדבר מאוד בולט ברגעים שבהם הסופרת מתמקדת במערכות היחסים בין הדמויות השונות ובעולם התוכן שלהן.

באופן טבעי לגיל הזה, הדבר שהם הכי עסוקים בו זו התאהבות הנעורים ובתחושות שלהם כלפי מושא ההתאהבות שלהם. הם פחות עסוקים בטוב ורע, הם פחות עסוקים בעתיד העולם או בעתיד שלהם. הם יותר עסוקים בבועה שלהם.

ישנו ניסיון לרפרף על נושאים כבדים יותר, כמו אלימות במשפחה או ניסיון אונס, אבל העלילה לא צוללת לעומק המשמעויות של האירועים האלה.

נהנתי מהקריאה ומהאזנה לספר וגם הצלחתי להתרגל לכל לקולות שמלווים את האירועים. העלילה קיצבית ויש בה אלמנטים של מתח ופנטזיה. הדמויות כתובות היטב ומשקפות את הגיל שהן נמצאות בו ורק בפרק האחרון מקבלים את הפתרון לתעלומה.

כמו שכתבתי, הספר מסתיים בקליף האגר ומשאיר פתח לעלילות הספר הבא שאותו אני מחכה לקרוא.

I discovered this book when the Hebrew version was promoted alongside an audiobook release (what they refer to as “semantic audio”—complete with background sounds and effects accompanying the narrators). I wasn’t enthusiastic about the semantic audio concept; although the narration was excellent, I felt the sound effects didn’t enhance my experience much. However, the book itself truly captured my heart.

Roni, a quiet and kind girl who struggles with anxiety and a fear of the dark, helps Shira try to win Eilon’s heart. Roni, Shira, and Eilon are all in the same high school class. Roni and Shira don’t know that Eilon isn’t like the other kids in class—he’s a wizard from the Northern tribe. His father is a member of the Wizards’ Council, which includes representatives from various tribes: South, North, East, and West.

During one of their meetings, Eilon reveals to Roni that he’s a wizard, and her world is forever changed from that moment on. The wizarding world is concealed and invisible to ordinary humans. When Eilon tells Roni about his wizardry, he opens a window into this hidden realm for her. Meanwhile, someone fiercely tries to harm Roni and her relationship with Eilon—someone powerful and determined who begins to pursue the group that Roni, Eilon, and Shira are part of, primarily Roni.

The group decides to uncover who is pursuing Roni, and in the process of this discovery, they undertake challenging journeys through the world of magic.

When I purchased the book, I didn’t realize it wasn’t self-contained and was part of a series. The book concludes with a major cliffhanger that leaves readers questioning the characters’ futures. The second installment in the series hasn’t been released yet.

The chapters are narrated from different characters’ perspectives, each experiencing the journey and events in their own way. While each character has a unique voice, these voices can sometimes lack depth and maturity, sounding similar since they are all 17 years old. This similarity is particularly apparent when the author emphasizes the relationships between characters and their inner worlds.

Naturally, at this age, they are mainly preoccupied with teenage romance and their feelings toward their crushes. They are less concerned with concepts of good and evil or their future and the world’s future. They focus more on their bubble.

While there are attempts to touch on heavier topics, such as domestic violence or attempted rape, the plot does not delve deeply into the implications of these events.

I enjoyed reading and listening to the book and became accustomed to all the sound effects accompanying the events. The plot is fast-paced, featuring elements of suspense and fantasy. The characters are well-developed and accurately reflect their age, and only in the final chapter do we discover the solution to the mystery.

As I mentioned, the book concludes with a cliffhanger and leaves an opening for the next book’s plot, which I’m eager to read.
