הוצאת עוץ, היא הוצאה קטנה ואיכותית בניהולה של גילי בר הילל. קראתי מספר ספרים שיצאו בהוצאה והם תמיד מהנים עם מסר חינוכי שעטוף באנושיות חמימה ומלבבת.

“חנות הספרים של המכשף הרשע” מאת דיליה שרמן הוא ספר פנטזיה לנוער, מלא קסם, מתח והומור. הסיפור עוקב אחר מסעו של ניק רנאר, נער שבורח מדודו המתעלל ומוצא את עצמו בביתו של מכשף בלתי צפוי.

ניק ניסה מספר פעמים להימלט מדודו האכזרי. בכל הפעמים הוא נכשל עד שבלילה חורפי במיוחד, הוא מגיע במקרה לחנות ספרים מסתורית בשם חנות הספרים של המכשף הרשע. החנות שייכת למכשף בשם סמולבון, שלא מאפשר לניק להמשיך בדרכו ומכריז עליו כשוליה שלו.

בעל כורחו, ניק הופך לשוליה, אבל במקום ללמוד קסמים, הוא בעיקר מקרצף רצפות ומבשל. סמולבון הוא לא בדיוק המאמן החלומי – הוא זקן, עצבני ונירגן. הוא דורש ציות מוחלט וכשניק מעיז למרוד, סמולבון מעניש אותו בדרכים יצירתיות ומשעשעות ביותר.

לאחר תקופה ניק מגלה שהספרים בחנות הם לא סתם דפים עם מילים, אלא ישויות בעלות רצון עצמאי, הוא מבין שאולי יש פה הזדמנות במיוחד כשהספרייה מציעה לו ספרים שמלמדים אותו קסמים.

בהתחלה, החיים עם סמולבון הם עונש. ניק מנקה, מבשל ומאכיל את בעלי החיים. סמולבון מעיר אותו מוקדם בבוקר ומטיל עליו משימות אינסופיות. הוא לא מצליח להבין את המניעים של המכשף הרשע, אבל עם הזמן, מתברר שיש לסמולבון סיבות טובות לשמור את ניק קרוב. סמולבון הוא השומר היחיד של הכפר מפני איום גדול יותר.

האיום הזה מגיע מצד מכשף בשם פיודלוס, אויב ותיק של סמולבון. פיודלוס הוא מכשף אפל, שמנסה להשתלט על הכפר בעזרת קסמים חזקים וצבא של אנשי זאב. התושבים נמצאים בסכנה מתמדת, וסמולבון הוא המחסום האחרון בין פיודלוס לבין הרס מוחלט של הכפר.

ניק נקרע בין הרצון לברוח לבין האחריות ההולכת וגוברת שהוא מרגיש. ככל שהזמן חולף, הספרים בחנות הקסומה מדריכים אותו בקסמים מורכבים יותר וככל שהוא לומד יותר, התיאבון שלו גדל והוא רוצה ללמוד יותר.

תהליך החניכה של ניק ארוך וכולל ניסוי וטעיה. אין בספר קסמים שקורים מעצמם וכל קסם דורש מניק מאמץ, הבנה, התמדה והרבה עבודה קשה. ידע הוא הכוח האמיתי. דרך הלמידה ניק מתחיל לשלוט בגורלו וחושב שאולי הוא גם יוכל לעזור לאנשי הכפר.

במקביל, סידרת החינוך שהוא עובר אצל סמולבון מלמדת אותו להפסיק לראות את עצמו קורבן, הוא חייב להתאמץ ולמצוא מוצא בכל סיטואציה.

מעבר לעלילה הקסומה, הספר מדבר על נושאים של זהות ושייכות. ניק מתחיל את הסיפור כנער חסר בית שמרגיש שאין לו מקום בעולם. אבל עם הזמן, הוא מגלה שהבית הוא היכן שהאנשים שאתה סומך עליהם ונלחם עבורם.

עוד נושא חזק בסיפור הוא המורכבות של טוב ורע. סמולבון נראה תחילה כעוד נבל טיפוסי, אבל במהרה מתברר שהוא חי לפי חוקים משלו ומשתדל לעשות את העבודה שלו. פיודלוס, לעומתו, הוא דמות של רוע מוחלט – אבל לא רוע שטחי. יש לו כוח עצום, והוא איום ממשי על הכפר ותושביו.

סגנון הכתיבה של דליה שרמן משלב הומור ושנינות לצד רגעי מתח. היא יוצרת עולם עשיר בפרטים, עם אווירה חורפית שמוסיפה הרבה לקסם של הספר. הכפר הקטן, החנות המסתורית, והשלג מסביב מזכירים את עולם האגדות. הדמויות של ניק וסמולבון מעוצבות היטב והדמות של סמולבון פשוט מצויינת. יש בה קריצה והומור אירוני משעשע.

יחד עם זאת, בחלק הראשון של הספר העלילה איטית ולוקח זמן עד שהיא תופסת תאוצה. ככל שהעלילה מתקדמת, והאישיות והיכולות של ניק צומחות, קצב העלילה מתגבר עד לשיאו.

כמו ספרים אחרים של ההוצאה, גם “חנות הספרים של המכשף הרע” מספקת קסם, דמויות נהדרות ועלילה שמתפתחת ומעבירה מסר בצורה חכמה. ספר מומלץ בחום.

Otz Publishing is a small yet high-quality publishing house led by Gili Bar-Hillel. I’ve read several of their published books, and they are always enjoyable. They offer an engaging story and a warm, humanistic message wrapped in an educational experience.

The Evil Wizard Smallbone by Delia Sherman is a fantasy novel filled with magic, suspense, and humor for young readers. The story follows the journey of Nick Renard, a boy who escapes from his abusive uncle and unexpectedly finds himself in the home of an unusual wizard.

Nick has tried to escape from his cruel uncle multiple times, but he has continually failed. Then, on a freezing winter night, he stumbles upon a mysterious bookstore called The Evil Wizard Bookstore. The shop is owned by a wizard named Smallbone, who refuses to let Nick leave and declares him his apprentice.

Against his will, Nick becomes Smallbone’s apprentice—but instead of learning magic, he is put to work scrubbing floors and cooking. Smallbone is far from the ideal mentor; he is old, irritable, and grumpy. He demands absolute obedience, and when Nick dares to rebel, Smallbone punishes him in the most creative (and often amusing) ways.

After some time, Nick discovers that the books in the store are not ordinary—they are sentient beings with a will of their own. He soon realizes this might be an opportunity, especially when the library offers him books that teach him magic.

Initially, living with Smallbone feels like a punishment. Nick cleans, cooks, and cares for the animals. Smallbone wakes him up early each morning and sets him endless tasks. He struggles to comprehend the wicked sorcerer’s motives, but over time, it becomes evident that Smallbone has good reasons for keeping Nick close. Smallbone serves as the village’s only protector against a more significant threat.

This threat comes from a sorcerer named Feudalos, an old enemy of Smallbone. Feudalos is a dark sorcerer who seeks to take over the village using powerful magic and an army of werewolves. The villagers are in constant danger, and Smallbone is the last barrier between the Feudalos and the village’s destruction.

Nick is caught between his desire to escape and his increasing sense of responsibility. As time passes, the books in the magical shop lead him through more complex spells, and the more he learns, the greater his thirst for knowledge.

Nick’s apprenticeship is long and filled with trial and error. No spells work independently, and every spell requires effort, understanding, perseverance, and a great deal of hard work. Knowledge is the true power. Through learning, Nick begins to take control of his fate and wonders if he might also be able to help the villagers.

At the same time, the discipline he undergoes with Smallbone teaches him to stop seeing himself as a victim—he must push himself and find a way out of every situation.

Beyond its enchanting plot, the book delves into themes of identity and belonging. Nick begins as a homeless boy who feels no roots in the world. However, over time, he discovers that home is not merely a location—the people you trust and fight for define it.

Another strong theme in the story is the complexity of good and evil. Smallbone initially seems like a typical villain, but it quickly becomes evident that he operates by his own rules and tries to perform his job. Fidelous, on the other hand, embodies pure evil—not in a superficial way. He possesses immense power and poses a real threat to the village and its people.

Delia Sherman’s writing seamlessly blends humor and wit with moments of genuine suspense. She creates a vividly detailed world with a wintry atmosphere that enhances the book’s magical quality. The small village, the enigmatic bookstore, and the surrounding snow-covered landscape all contribute to a fairytale-like setting. Nick and Smallbone are well-developed, and Smallbone himself is an exceptional character—full of charm, sarcasm, and ironic humor.

That being said, the book’s start unfolds slowly, and it takes some time for the story to gain momentum. However, as the plot advances and Nick’s character and skills evolve, the pacing quickly builds toward an exciting climax.

Like other books from Otz Publishing, The Evil Wizard Smallbone offers magic, unforgettable characters, and a well-crafted storyline with a significant message. It comes highly recommended.
