הקייטנה של קנלר הוא ספר קטן אך טעון, שמאגד שתי נובלות ושלושה סיפורים קצרים. זהו קרת הקלאסי, עם השפה התל אביבית העכשווית שלו, הסרקזם, ההומור היבש והנגיעה הניו־אייג'ית.
הנובלה המרכזית, שעל שמה קרוי הספר, מתרחשת בעולם הבא, אבל לא בעולם הבא מואר ומנחם, אלא במעין מציאות מקבילה, אפרורית, כמעט חיקוי של החיים עצמם. זהו מקום שאליו מגיעים אנשים שהתאבדו. חיים, בחור צעיר ששׂם קץ לחייו, מגלה שמה שמחכה לו לאחר המוות הוא בעצם אותה שגרה משעממת ומדכאת שהכיר בעולם הזה. הדבר היחיד שמחזיק אותו הוא הידיעה שגם חברתו לשעבר התאבדה, והוא יוצא לחפש אותה.
האבסורד טמון בכך שגם בעולם הבא יש מי שמנסים להתאבד שוב, כדי לחזור איכשהו לעולם החיים. התפיסה הזו, לשחק עם רעיון המוות כמקום שכפול של החיים, בלי הבטחה לגאולה, מייצרת מתח בין טרגדיה לקומדיה. כל הזמן אנחנו נעים בין אימה אמיתית לבין חיוך עקום שנולד מהסיטואציה המופרכת.
שתי הנובלות והסיפורים הקצרים הנלווים ממשיכים את הקו הזה. הם נוגעים במוות, בהתאבדות, בניכור, ובשאלה מהו בעצם "בית". קרת כותב על סיטואציות שוליות, על דמויות שנראות כאילו נשלפו מסמטה צדדית, ומצליח להפוך אותן למרכז הסיפור.
זה לא ספר שמתאים לכל מצב רוח. כדי לקרוא אותו צריך להיכנס לאיזו אווירה נפשית מסוימת, להיות מוכנים להומור שחור, ולהבין שמה שנראה בהתחלה כהזוי או מוגזם, נושא איתו גם אמירה רצינית מאוד על החיים עצמם, על הבדידות, ועל החיפוש אחר שייכות.
הקייטנה של קנלר אולי לא ספר שמח, אבל הוא ספר חד, מצחיק־מריר ומעורר מחשבה. קרת שוב מצליח לקחת את מה שנראה מופרך ולהפוך אותו לראי שמחזיר לנו את הפנים של המציאות, רק קצת עקומות יותר.

Kneller’s Summer Camp is a small but loaded book that gathers two novellas and three short stories. This is classic Etgar Keret: the contemporary Tel Aviv voice, the sarcasm, the dry humor, and the faint New Age touch.
The central novella, after which the book is named, takes place in the afterlife. Yet this is not a radiant or comforting afterlife. It is a parallel reality, gray and almost a replica of life itself. It is the place where those who committed suicide end up. Haim, a young man who has taken his own life, discovers that what awaits him after death is the same dull, depressing routine he already knew. The only thing that drives him forward is the knowledge that his ex-girlfriend has also committed suicide, and he sets out to find her.
The absurdity lies in the fact that even in the afterlife, some try to kill themselves again, to somehow return to the world of the living. This unsettling idea, of death as merely a copy of life without the promise of redemption, generates a tension between tragedy and comedy. The reader is constantly shifting between genuine horror and a crooked smile born of the absurdity of the situation.
The second novella and the accompanying short stories continue along this same line. They deal with death, suicide, alienation, and the question of what “home” truly means. Keret writes about marginal situations and characters that seem pulled out of a back alley, and manages to place them at the center of his stories.
This is not a book for every mood. To read it, you need to enter a particular mental atmosphere, to be open to dark humor, and to understand that what at first seems bizarre or exaggerated also carries a solemn statement about life itself, about loneliness, and about the search for belonging.
Kneller’s Summer Camp may not be a cheerful book, but it is sharp, bitterly funny, and thought-provoking. Keret once again manages to take what seems absurd and turn it into a mirror that reflects our reality to us, only slightly more distorted.
