Abandoned by the family's father, the mother raised her two daughters in constant financial precarity. They lived in rented apartments and had to be prepared to flee at any moment when they couldn’t pay rent. At times, they stayed in motels, often leaving behind their few belongings as collateral. They survived on food stamps, church donations, and, at times, bad checks.
Simpson writes about the shame, the hypocrisy, and the weight of poverty, exposing its dual nature: moments of soft endurance alongside brutal episodes of displacement and loss. There are tender details, such as the inability to afford clothes or join a school trip, alongside devastating memories of eviction and calculating the exact day they needed to leave before the collectors arrived.
Some of the most challenging passages focus on healthcare, specifically the disparity between treatment for those with financial means and those without. Her mother was forced to leave a hospital bed only hours after major surgery, highlighting the cruelty of a system that treats poverty as a disqualification from proper care.
Throughout her life, the mother suffered from bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. She battled cancer four times and ultimately spent her last days in hospice. Her unshakable faith permeates the memoir, with chapter titles echoing the Bible — “Genesis,” “Exodus”—creating a cadence reminiscent of scripture. This choice adds solemnity and gravitas, though at times it risks tipping into excess drama.
Simpson’s memoir is not only a story of one mother and daughter, but also a reflection on systemic injustice, including poverty, racial inequality, healthcare gaps, and the resilience of those forced to endure them. It is an unflinching account, heavy yet deeply human, that insists on remembering both the pain and the strength that carried them through.
