The Last of the Stanfields הוא רומן משפחתי־בלשי שנבנה משלושה צירי זמן, שלושה סיפורי אהבה וסוד אחד שעובר בירושה בלי שאיש מן הדמויות מבין את מלוא משמעותו. מארק לוי נע בין מלחמת העולם השנייה, אנגליה של סוף המאה העשרים וחקירה עכשווית, ומרכיב בהדרגה סיפור על בריחה, אשמה, משפחה והמחיר של אמת שנקברה במשך שנים.

בציר השני, סלי אן בתם של חנה ורוברט סטנפילד הולכת לעולמה באנגליה. המוות שלה פותח תיבת פנדורה כשמכתב מגיע לבתה, אלינור ריגבי, הטוען כי סלי אן היתה מעורבת ברצח. אלינור ריגבי לא יכולה להישאר אדישה לעובדה שהיא לא הכירה באמת את אימה האהובה והיא פונה לאביה שמסרב לשתף פעולה. סיפורה של סלי אן, יחשף אט אט עם התפתחות העלילה.
בציר השלישי, ניסיון פיענוח התעלומה ע"י אלינור ריגבי והשותף שלה למסע, ג'ורג' הריסון קולינס, שגם הוא באופן מפתיע מקבל מכתב מגורם עלום ויוצא לפגישה עם אלינור ריגבי מבלי שידע שכל ספינת חייו תעבור טלטלה.

לקוראים שאוהבים סודות משפחתיים, עלילות רב־דוריות, תעלומות מן העבר, מלחמת העולם השנייה וסיפורים שנבנים בהדרגה עד להתפרצות מאוחרת.
המבנה בשלושת צירי הזמן, דמותה של אלינור ריגבי והאופן שבו מארק לוי חושף בהדרגה את הריקבון בתוך משפחת סטנפילד.
הספר מתחיל לאט, והמתח אינו חריף במיוחד. רק בחלקים המאוחרים העלילה צוברת תאוצה, אבל הסיום מעניק לכל הקווים תחושת התפרצות מספקת.
אהבתי את הדמויות בעיקר של אלינור ריגבי ואת הדינמיקה המשפחתית. הרבה דם רע זורם שם במשפחת סטינפילד וככל שהעלילה מתקדמת כך הסופר חושף בפני הקורא את עומק הריקבון והרוע שיכולים להיות במשפחות.
בהתחלה הספר איטי ולדעתי ברבע הראשון שלו בכלל לא פוגשים את הדמות של הריסון, אבל עם התקדמות הספר העלילה תופסת תאוצה ביחוד בדפים האחרונים של הספר שזה כמו מפץ גדול.
אהבתי את הספר. אין בו מתח גדול או תעלומה מבריקה במיוחד, אבל הוא מצליח לרקום סיפור משכנע על פשע ועל התוצאות שהוא משאיר אחריו.

The Last of the Stanfields is a family mystery built around three timelines, three love stories and one secret passed down through generations without any of the characters fully understanding its meaning.
Marc Levy moves between the Second World War, late twentieth-century England and a contemporary investigation, gradually constructing a story about escape, guilt, family and the price of a truth buried for years.
In the first timeline, during the Second World War, Hannah, a French Jewish woman, and Robert, an American, flee to Spain and then to the United States. The journey of escape remains with them for years and eventually demands a heavy price.
In the second timeline, their daughter, Sally-Anne Stanfield, dies in England. Her death opens a Pandora’s box when her daughter, Eleanor-Rigby, receives a letter claiming that Sally-Anne had been involved in a murder.
Eleanor cannot ignore the possibility that she never truly knew her beloved mother. She turns to her father, who refuses to cooperate, while Sally-Anne’s story is revealed slowly as the plot develops.
The third timeline follows Eleanor’s attempt to solve the mystery with George Harrison Collins, who has also received a letter from an unknown source. He arrives for a meeting with Eleanor without realizing that his entire life is about to be shaken.
I especially liked Eleanor-Rigby and the family dynamics. A great deal of bad blood runs through the Stanfield family, and as the story progresses, Levy gradually exposes the depth of the decay and cruelty that can exist inside families.
The beginning is slow, and I do not think Harrison appears at all during the first quarter of the book. As the novel progresses, however, the story gains momentum, especially in the final pages, which unfold almost like a large explosion.
I liked the book. It does not contain intense suspense or a particularly brilliant mystery, but it succeeds in weaving a convincing story about a crime and the consequences it leaves behind.
