מותו של אהרון אלקלעי הוא רומן משפחתי עצוב ומצחיק על שלושה ילדים שגדלו תחת השפעתו המכריעה של אב בוטה, אקסצנטרי וחסר גבולות. עידית אלנתן בונה משפחה מלאה באהבה, טינה, הדרה והחמצות, ומצליחה כמעט עד הסוף ליצור ספר מצוין. כמעט, מפני שבעמודים האחרונים היא בוחרת בפתרון קל שמחליש את כל מה שנבנה לפניו.
אהרון אלקלעי עיצב את חייהם של שלושת ילדיו, כל אחד בדרך אחרת.
דניאלה, הבת הבכורה, התחתנה עם ערבי מיפו וחיה עמו במשך עשרים שנה. אהרון, איש ימין שלא הצליח להכיל את הבחירה שלה, הדיר אותה מחייו.
עופר, הבן, נחשב בעיני אביו לכישלון מוחלט ומעולם לא זכה לאהבתו. במשך שנים חי עם אישה המבוגרת ממנו בעשרים שנה. לאחר שמתה מסרטן, הוא חזר לבית המשפחה ואל ההתעמרויות המוכרות של אביו.
סנהדרין, הבת הצעירה, הייתה היחידה שזכתה לאהבתו של אהרון. אלא שגם האהבה הזאת הייתה כוחנית וחונקת. הוא עטף אותה בחיבוק דוב מתמשך, עד שנותרה בבגרותה לבדה, בלי יכולת ברורה להיפרד ממנו ולבנות לעצמה חיים.
מה שצריך לדעת
רומן משפחתי ישראלי על אהרון אלקלעי ושלושת ילדיו, שכל אחד מהם עוצב ונפגע בדרך אחרת מן האהבה, הכעס והשליטה של האב.
לקוראים שאוהבים ספרות ישראלית, משפחות לא מתפקדות, יחסי הורים וילדים, הומור שחור וסיפורים על יחסים בין יהודים לערבים.
הדמויות, ההומור והאופן שבו אהרון ממשיך לעצב את חיי ילדיו גם כשהוא נעדר. הספר מצליח להיות מצחיק ועצוב כמעט באותו משפט.
הסיום מציע פתרון קל מדי למתח משפחתי ולאומי שנבנה לאורך הספר. הוא אינו מוחק את איכויותיו, אבל מונע ממנו להגיע לשיא שהיה אפשרי.
הספר עוסק גם ביחסים בין יהודים לערבים, במשפחות מעורבות ובטינה היוקדת משני הצדדים, שמצליחה להרוס גם אהבה גדולה. אין גשר רחב דיו להכיל את שני הלאומים ואת מטען הפחד, העלבון וההיסטוריה שהם נושאים עמם.
ציר נוסף הוא יחסי הורים וילדים. הוא מופיע בקשר של אהרון עם שלושת ילדיו, וגם ביחסים בין דניאלה לבנה הבכור, שבוחר ללכת ללמוד ברמאללה. בכל אחד מן הקשרים האלה האהבה קיימת, אבל היא אינה מצליחה להשתחרר מן הזהות, מן הלאומיות ומן הצורך של ההורים לקבוע לילדיהם מי עליהם להיות.
יש בספר קטעים מצחיקים מאוד, לצד רגעים עצובים וכמעט טרגיים. האיזון הזה הוא אחת החוזקות שלו. הדמויות חיות, פגומות ואמינות, ובעיקר אהרון, שנוכחותו ממשיכה לעצב את המשפחה גם כשהוא נעדר.
לכן הסוף מאכזב כל כך. במקום לתת למתח המשפחתי והלאומי להגיע להכרעה מורכבת, הסופרת מציעה פתרון נוח מדי. הוא אינו הורס את הספר, אבל הוא בהחלט מוריד ממנו את הברק שהיה יכול להיות לו.
למרות הסיום, מותו של אהרון אלקלעי הוא ספר מצוין. מצחיק, עצוב, חד ומלא דמויות שנשארות בזיכרון.

The Death of Aharon Alkala’i / Idit Elnatan
The Death of Aharon Alkala’i is a sad and often funny family novel about three children who grew up under the overwhelming influence of a blunt, eccentric and boundaryless father.
Idit Elnatan creates a family filled with love, resentment, exclusion and missed opportunities, and comes very close to writing an excellent novel. Very close, because in the final pages she chooses an easy solution that weakens everything built before it.
Aharon Alkala’i shaped the lives of all three of his children, each in a different way.
Daniela, the eldest daughter, married an Arab man from Jaffa and lived with him for twenty years. Aharon, a right-wing man unable to accept her choice, cut her out of his life.
Ofer, the son, was considered a complete failure by his father and never received his love. For years, he lived with a woman twenty years older than him. After she died of cancer, he returned to the family home and to his father’s familiar abuse.
Sanhedrin, the youngest daughter, was the only child who received Aharon’s love. But that love was also controlling and suffocating. He held her in a relentless embrace until, as an adult, she remained alone and unable to separate from him or build a life of her own.
The novel also deals with relationships between Jews and Arabs, mixed families, and the burning resentment on both sides that can destroy even a great love.
There is no bridge wide enough to carry both national identities and the burden of fear, humiliation and history attached to them.
Another central theme is the relationship between parents and children. It appears in Aharon’s relationship with his three children, and also in the relationship between Daniela and her eldest son, who chooses to study in Ramallah.
In each of these relationships, love exists, but it cannot free itself from identity, nationalism and the parental need to decide who the child should become.
The novel contains genuinely funny passages, alongside moments that are sad and almost tragic. This balance is one of its strengths.
The characters are vivid, flawed and believable, especially Aharon, whose presence continues to shape the family even in his absence.
That is why the ending is so disappointing. Instead of allowing the family and national tensions to reach a complex resolution, the author offers a solution that feels far too convenient.
It does not ruin the novel, but it does take away some of the brilliance it might otherwise have achieved.
Despite the ending, The Death of Aharon Alkala’i is an excellent novel. It is funny, sad, sharp and filled with characters who remain in the memory.
