לילי בארט גדלה במשפחה שירדה מנכסיה. היא יפיפיה מהממת בת 29 ורווקה שגדלה על ברכי האמונה שהיא צריכה להינשא לכסף. כאשר הוריה עוברים מהעולם, לילי עוברת לגור עם דודתה האמידה.

הדודה, לא מעוניינת להעניק ללילי קיצבה קבועה. מדי פעם היא "זורקת" לה פירורים, אבל הם לא מספיקים ללילי לחיות ברמת החיים של החברה הניו יורקית העשירה. לילי אינה טיפשה, היא מודעת לכך שכדי לנהל את אורח החיים שהיא מעוניינת בו עליה להינשא לגבר עשיר, בו בזמן היא גם מודעת לכך שהיא בת 30 ולמעשה מרוששת ולמעשה במקביל היא מחפשת אהבה.

חייה של לילי הולכים ומתדרדרים מדחי לדחי. היא לא מוכנה לחשוף את הזוג שניצל אותה בכדי לנקות את עצמה, היא לא מוכנה להינשא לגברים שמציעים לה, היא לא מוכנה לקבל עזרה כספית לכסות את חובותיה והיא לא מוכשרת לעבודה.

Lily Barrett was raised in a family that had experienced financial difficulties. She is a 29-year-old single woman who firmly believes she should marry someone wealthy. After her parents passed away, Lily moved in with her wealthy aunt.

Lily's aunt refuses to provide her with a fixed allowance. Instead, she occasionally gives her small sums of money. Unfortunately, these amounts are insufficient for Lily to maintain the luxurious lifestyle of New York's wealthy society. Lily is not foolish. She understands that to achieve her desired lifestyle, she must marry a rich man. However, she also knows she is now 30 years old, poor, and searching for true love.

It's a vicious cycle.

Lily's life takes an adverse turn as she becomes addicted to gambling and spends large sums of money. Her aunt disapproves of her actions and stops supporting her, leaving Lily to deal with her financial troubles alone. To solve her financial problems, Lily decides to search for a wealthy husband. However, her destructive behavior causes her to reject every suitable man who proposes to her.

Lily went on a trip to Europe with her friends. Unfortunately, her companions turned against her and falsely accused her of trying to attract one of their husbands. Upon returning to the US, Lily discovered that most of her friends had abandoned her, and she had fallen into poverty. In addition to her misfortune, her late aunt left her nothing in the will due to false stories about Lily circulating.

Lily is currently experiencing a difficult period in her life. She is reluctant to discuss the individuals who exploited her to enhance her circumstances. Furthermore, she has declined proposals of marriage from multiple men and is not interested in receiving financial assistance to pay off her debts. Unfortunately, she struggles to secure employment due to a lack of necessary skills.

The book depicts the hypocrisy of the affluent society in New York during the early 20th century. Society deemed women as mere beautiful objects to accompany rich men but did not accept strong and opinionated women who stood up for themselves and took revenge on them. On the one hand, society urged women to be beautiful and marry rich men, but on the other hand, it denounced them as Gold Diggers.

The individual only valued money and disregarded people, causing her to reject companies with lower financial gains.

This book explores various forms of human evil and can be pretty gloomy sometimes. However, it is a captivating anthropological study that provides insight into New York's wealthy society during the early 1900s. Additionally, it also offers a contemporary perspective on the status of women.
