The Forgotten Garden הוא רומן משפחתי רחב שנע בין שלוש נשים, שלוש תקופות וסוד אחד שנקבר במשך עשרות שנים. קייט מורטון בונה את סיפורה של נל דרך זיכרונות, מסמכים, ראיונות וחקירה מאוחרת של נכדתה קסנדרה, עד שהתעלומה המשפחתית מתחברת לתמונה אחת של נטישה, מעמד, ניצול וזהות.

המבנה בשלושת צירי הזמן, דמותה של אלייזה והאופן שבו קייט מורטון חושפת בהדרגה את סיפור הנטישה, המעמד והניצול.
הספר כולל תכנים קשים הנוגעים לניצול ילדים, פגיעה מינית, יחסי כוח ורצח. למרות זאת, הוא בנוי היטב והסיום מעניק תחושת השלמה.

ברקע הסיפור של אלייזה וגם של נל, הדוד הפדופיל שמנסה לצלם ולגעת בהן כי הן מזכירות לו את אחותו.
הניצול של המעמדות הנמוכים ע"י בעלי ההון והאצולה. מדובר בשנים שלפני מלחמת העולם הראשונה ועוד לפני השינוי החברתי שיגיע. מאוד מקומם בעיקר החלק של אלייזה, והניצול שלה ע"י אדליין ורוז ואז המידור שלה מהילדה ובסופו של דבר הרצח שלה כי בסופו של דבר זה היה רצח.
ספר יפיפה ולמרות שיש בו חלקים מקוממים, הוא בנוי כל כך טוב והסוף שלו איכשהו מפצה על עוגמת הנפש שחלקים מהסיפור גורמים.

The Forgotten Garden / Kate Morton
The Forgotten Garden is a sweeping family novel built around three women, three periods of time, and one secret buried for decades.
Kate Morton tells Nell’s story through memories, documents, interviews and the later investigation conducted by her granddaughter, Cassandra, until the family mystery becomes a single picture of abandonment, class, exploitation and identity.
Nell stands at the center of the novel. In 2005, she was hospitalized and close to death, but most of her story is told through the years 1975 and 1976, when she attempted to understand how she arrived alone in Australia as a child and who her real family was.
The second central figure is a writer whose identity is revealed only near the end of the novel. Most of her story takes place between 1900 and 1913.
This section of the book is powerful, disturbing and deeply upsetting. It unfolds gradually through interviews and conversations conducted by Cassandra, Nell’s granddaughter, in 2005.
The third figure is Cassandra herself. Her part of the story takes place in 2005, although the narrative also returns repeatedly to the years 1975 and 1976.
Beyond the plot and the solution to the mystery, Morton creates a convincing piece of British social history.
The treatment of children, especially their lack of rights and protection, is represented vividly in the sections where Eliza and Sammy live with Mrs Swindell.
The same pattern continues after Eliza moves to the Mountrachet estate. The way Madeline treats her resembles the material from which Cinderella stories were created, although there is little danger that this novel will become a comforting fairy tale.
In the background of both Eliza’s and Nell’s stories is an abusive uncle who attempts to photograph and touch them because they remind him of his sister.
The novel also portrays the exploitation of the lower classes by wealth and aristocracy.
These are the years before the First World War and before the social changes that would follow. Eliza’s story is particularly infuriating: her exploitation by Adeline and Rose, her separation from the child, and finally her death, which was, in the end, murder.
The Forgotten Garden is a beautiful novel. Some sections are deeply upsetting, but the structure is so carefully built that the ending somehow compensates for much of the distress caused along the way.
