הסכנות שבהתנהגות נלוזה / אונורה דה בלזק

זה בוודאי לא בלזאק. כנראה פשוט אני, והעובדה שלא התחברתי לאף אחד משלושת הסיפורים בקובץ.

הסיפור המרכזי מתאר את עולמו של גובסק, מלווה בריבית שנע בין בתי האצולה הפריזאית ומנצל היטב את המצוקות, התאוות והחולשות של האנשים סביבו. בלב הסיפור עומדת משפחת דה רסטו, שאחיזתה ברכוש, בכבוד ובמעמד הולכת ומתפוררת, בין היתר בשל תככים, בגידות וחובות.

על הנייר זה חומר מצוין לבלזאק: כסף, מעמד, אצולה, תשוקה, צביעות וחברה שבה כמעט כל קשר אנושי ניתן לתרגום למחיר. בפועל, לא הצלחתי להתעניין מספיק בדמויות או בגורלן.

גם לסיפור השני, "אל ורדוגו", המתרחש בספרד בתקופת הכיבוש הנפוליאוני, לא התחברתי. יש בו סיטואציה אכזרית מאוד ובחירה בלתי אפשרית, אבל הוא נשאר מבחינתי רחוק וקר.

הסיפור השלישי, "שיקוי חיי הנצח", עוסק בדון ז'ואן ובפנטזיה על חיי נצח, וגם הוא לא הצליח למשוך אותי פנימה.

כנראה שזה פשוט לא היה הזמן שלי לקרוא בלזאק.

כי מה שהוא עושה כאן ברור לגמרי: הוא יורד שוב ושוב לנבכי התעתוע של הנפש האנושית, ובעיקר לאופן שבו כסף, תשוקה, מעמד ופחד משנים את ההתנהגות שלנו.

רק שהפעם הבנתי את הרעיון יותר משהרגשתי אותו.

The Dangers of Misconduct / Honoré de Balzac

This is almost certainly not Balzac’s fault. It is probably mine, and I simply didn't connect with any of the three stories in this collection.

The main story follows Gobseck, a moneylender who moves through the homes of the Parisian aristocracy and takes full advantage of the financial distress, desires and weaknesses of the people around him. At the center of the story is the de Restaud family, whose grip on property, status and respectability gradually collapses under the weight of intrigue, betrayal and debt.

On paper, this is perfect material for Balzac: money, class, aristocracy, desire, hypocrisy and a society in which almost every human relationship can eventually be translated into a price. In practice, I simply couldn't get interested enough in the characters or what happened to them.

I did not connect with the second story, "El Verdugo", either. Set in Spain during the Napoleonic occupation, it contains an extremely cruel situation and an impossible choice, but for me it remained distant and emotionally cold.

The third story, "The Elixir of Life," deals with Don Juan and the fantasy of eternal life, and that one failed to draw me in as well.

Perhaps this simply was not the right time for me to read Balzac.

Because what he is doing here is perfectly clear. Again and again, he descends into the deceptions and contradictions of human nature, especially the ways in which money, desire, class and fear distort human behavior.

This time, though, I understood the idea much more than I felt it.
