Northanger Abbey/ Jane Austen

Northanger Abbey/ Jane Austen

In my view, Northanger Abbey is made up of two stories that only fully come together in the final chapters.

The first part follows Catherine Morland, the daughter of a large and respectable but not wealthy family, as she travels to Bath with Mr. and Mrs. Allen. There she meets the Thorpe family and Henry Tilney.

She becomes particularly attached to Isabella Thorpe, whom she considers a friend, while Isabella’s brother John pursues Catherine aggressively and with very little respect for boundaries. Catherine eventually puts John in his place but remains close to Isabella, who becomes engaged to Catherine’s brother James.

From the beginning, Isabella is a questionable and self-indulgent character. She repeatedly manipulates Catherine in order to get her own way, but Catherine gradually begins to understand that Isabella’s standards of behavior and morality are not especially admirable. She continues to give her the benefit of the doubt until Isabella is finally exposed as greedy and hypocritical, and the friendship between them ends.

In contrast to the Thorpes, Catherine’s relationship with the Tilneys grows stronger. She falls in love with Henry Tilney and becomes close to his sister Eleanor. Eleanor invites Catherine to Northanger Abbey, and Catherine accepts.

This is where the second part of the novel begins.

Catherine travels with the Tilney family to Northanger Abbey, a large and well-kept estate. She knows that Mrs. Tilney died of illness, but General Tilney’s harsh personality, combined with Catherine’s very active imagination and her obsession with Gothic novels, leads her to suspect that something darker may have happened.

When she finally shares her suspicions with Henry, he firmly brings her back to reality.

Catherine is forced to confront the fact that she has let fictional conventions shape how she reads real people.

As the weeks pass, Catherine receives no letters from Isabella, whom she still misses. She then learns that James has broken off his engagement to Isabella.

At the same time, General Tilney travels to London. When he returns, he abruptly sends Catherine home alone, without proper escort or explanation.

Catherine is devastated.

She has not had the chance to say goodbye to Henry, and her sudden expulsion from Northanger Abbey leaves her confused and deeply unsettled.

In the final part of the novel, the two halves come together when Henry Tilney arrives and explains what happened.

John Thorpe had exaggerated Catherine’s family wealth because he wanted to make himself seem more important. General Tilney therefore believed Catherine came from a wealthy family and encouraged the relationship. Once he discovered that Catherine was not nearly as rich as he had been led to believe, he discarded her almost immediately.

Henry, however, loves her and is prepared to marry her even at the risk of losing his father’s approval.

Catherine is one of the most naïve characters I have ever read.

At times, that naïveté comes dangerously close to foolishness.

But as the story develops, she does grow. At heart, she believes in love, honesty, and the fundamental decency of other people, while her enthusiasm for Gothic novels constantly inflames her imagination.

Those assumptions begin to crack only toward the end of the novel: first when Henry forces her to confront the absurdity of her suspicions, then through James’s heartbreak, and finally through her own expulsion from Northanger Abbey.

There is less emphasis on romance here than in some of Austen’s other novels, and Catherine’s attraction to Henry is scattered throughout the story rather than becoming its central force.

The Thorpe siblings are thoroughly unpleasant.

Henry Tilney, meanwhile, struck me as rather restrained and conservative.

And yet, despite Catherine’s extraordinary naïveté, she is a colorful and lively heroine.

Compared with Fanny Price in Mansfield Park, I found Catherine much more interesting and much more alive.
