ב־54 עמודים בלבד מצליחה אלין הילדרברנד לצייר סיפור טעון, רגיש ומעורר מחשבה. העלילה מתרחשת על רקע אחד המקומות המרהיבים על פני כדור הארץ: איי גלאפגוס. אך הנוף הפראי והאקזוטי משמש כאן רקע אירוני להתפוררות איטית של אמון, זוגיות והאשליה שאפשר להכיר אדם באמת.
המספרת, סופיה, אישה צעירה, יוצאת לחופשה חלומית עם ג'יי. פי, בן זוגה בחצי השנה האחרונה. ג'יי. פי מבוגר ממנה בעשרים שנה, והוא אב לילדים בגילה. הוא תכנן את טיול חלומותיו ואף הכין רשימה של בעלי חיים שברצונו לצלם. סופיה עצמה לא התלהבה במיוחד, אך תלתה תקוות שהטיול יוביל להצעת נישואין ואולי לפתיחת פרק חדש בחייהם.

In just 54 pages, Elin Hilderbrand delivers a story that is charged, poignant, and thought-provoking. Set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most breathtaking locations – the Galápagos Islands – this short story juxtaposes wild, natural beauty with the quiet unraveling of trust, intimacy, and the illusion that we truly know the people closest to us.
The narrator, Sophia, is a young woman embarking on a dream vacation with J.P., her partner of six months. He is twenty years her senior and the father of children her age. He meticulously planned the trip and even compiled a list of wildlife he hoped to photograph. Sophia herself wasn’t particularly enthusiastic, but she pinned her hopes on the idea that this journey would lead to a proposal, perhaps even a new chapter in their relationship.
Moments before boarding the plane, J.P. receives a mysterious phone call from his ex-wife. He claims he must return home, as his son, who struggles with addiction, is once again in crisis. He insists that Sophia go on alone and promises to stay in touch – but then disappears. Every attempt she makes to contact him is met with silence.
At first glance, this seems like a simple story of abandonment. But Hilderbrand, with her restrained and precise prose, constructs a quiet kaleidoscope of revelations. Amid the raw beauty of nature and surrounded by strangers on a foreign boat, Sophia is forced to examine not only the circumstances of J.P.'s disappearance, but herself: the choices she made, the version of love she imagined, and the small lies she allowed herself to believe.
She gradually discovers – sometimes through subtle clues, sometimes more directly – how little she knew the man with whom she shared a bed, plans, and dreams of a family. The story also touches on generational complexities, the blurry line between compassion and self-erasure, and the pain of late-stage disillusionment.
Despite its brevity, Natural Selection evokes real depth and raises weighty questions. One might wish Hilderbrand had developed it into a full novel. Still, in its final pages, the story offers a quiet sense of closure – a small gesture of grace that lingers long after the last line.
