“First Down” מאת גרייס ריילי הוא הספר הראשון בסדרת “Beyond the Play” , המשלבת בין עולמות הספורט והרומנטיקה במכללה. הספרים בסידרה עוסקים באחים לבית קלהאן והם כולם מתרחשים על רקע ליגת הספורט במכללות.

הכתיבה של גרייס ריילי טובה מאוד. הכתיבה אינטיליגנטית, משלבת הומור, דיאלוגים שנונים, ובמצבי עימות (ויש די הרבה כאלה בספר) היא מצליחה לתת תחושה אוטנטית. אהבתי את הכימיה בין ג’יימס לבקט ואת מערכת היחסים בינהם.

“First Down” by Grace Reilly is the first book in the “Beyond the Play” series, which blends the worlds of college sports and romance. The series follows the Callahan siblings, with each book set against the backdrop of collegiate athletics.
This novel tells the story of James Callahan, a star quarterback, and Beckett Wood, a talented literature student, who are caught in an agreement that will help them achieve their goals.
James, entirely focused on his football career, is forced to deal with failing a writing course—a failure that threatens his professional future. Beckett, on the other hand, avoids involvement with athletes due to past experiences, but she agrees to help James with his studies in exchange for a deal: a fake relationship that will help her get rid of her persistent ex.
Beyond being a gifted football player, James is, first and foremost, a kind and sensitive person. He struggles under the heavy shadow of his father—a former football star—and the endless expectations placed on him by his family. Transferring to McKee University is his attempt at a fresh start, away from distractions that could jeopardize his NFL dreams, but he soon realizes that his past is not so easy to escape.
Inevitably, what began as a mutually beneficial arrangement starts to evolve. Even though their deal was meant to be temporary, real emotions develop, and their connection begins to flourish.
Beyond the romance and the highly competitive atmosphere of college football, one of the novel’s most potent themes is the impact of family on our choices in life. The family dynamic plays an integral role in James’s character development, particularly as the eldest son bearing the weight of his father’s expectations.
For Beckett, family plays a different but equally significant role. Unlike James, she has learned to rely only on herself, shaped by a traumatic family event and a complicated relationship with her mother that dictates much of her life. Meeting James challenges her self-imposed isolation and allows her to choose a path.
Grace Reilly’s writing is witty, engaging, and authentic. She masterfully weaves humor, funny dialogue, and emotionally charged conflicts, all of which feel real and immersive. I particularly loved the chemistry between James and Beckett and how their relationship developed throughout the story.
In conclusion, “First Down” is an excellent addition to the genre, leaving me eager for more. The story is meaningful and engaging without relying solely on steamy scenes. James and Beckett’s journey is well-written, fast-paced, romantic, and deeply human. I’ve already purchased the next book in the series, which focuses on Cooper, and I can’t wait to dive into it soon!
