Dating Dr. Dil/ Nisha Sharma

Dil".

הוא מוצג כגרסה מחודשת ל"אילוף הסוררת", ופותח סדרה בשם "If Shakespeare Were an Auntie".

If Shakespeare Was an Auntie #1

Dating Dr. Dil / Nisha Sharma

Dating Dr. Dil starts with good energy. Kareena Mann wants to keep the house that belonged to her late mother. Her father is planning to sell it, and the money that would allow Kareena to buy it depends on one thing: she has to get engaged. Prem Verma is a cardiologist who hosts a television show called Dr. Dil. In Hindi, prem means love and dil means heart, and he believes in love about as much as I believe in heaven. As far as he is concerned, a successful relationship is a matter of decision and logic.

Their first meeting goes badly, develops into a public confrontation that Kareena’s sister uploads to YouTube, and becomes even more complicated when Kareena’s aunties offer Prem a deal of their own: convince Kareena that he is her soulmate, and they will fund the community clinic he is trying to open.

At first, it works. Kareena is surrounded by a loud, intrusive Indian American family involved in every detail of her life. The aunties interfere, her father applies pressure, her sister’s wedding is approaching, and the house she grew up in becomes a symbol of everything she is afraid of losing. Prem comes from the opposite direction, with an almost clinical approach to relationships. In his view, love is not a requirement for a successful marriage.

The conflict between them gives the opening plenty of pace, and the family storyline makes the romance feel as though an entire world exists around the couple.

Then the book begins to drag.

Around the middle, the same conflicts start repeating themselves. Kareena wants the house. Her mother is dead. Time is running out. Her family wants a husband for her. The aunties interfere. She is attracted to Prem. Prem still cannot offer her the kind of love she wants.

I got it.

For long stretches, I felt as though the plot was standing still while the characters held yet another version of the same conversation.

The relationship between Kareena and Prem suffers from the same problem. They move closer, then pull away, over and over, until it becomes difficult to remember what has actually changed since the previous round.

And then comes the sex.

They decide on a brief fling to “get it out of their system.” Not a bad idea. It could have moved the plot forward.

Instead, the author turns it into the Olympics.

The scenes are much more explicit than the tone of the book prepares the reader for, and Prem transforms almost overnight from a rational cardiologist into someone breathing down Jamie Dornan’s neck.

Mrs. Gupta, who writes the advice column for the community newspaper in the novel, had already warned us: when two people begin to like each other, they should be separated immediately.

Accidents happen.

Oddly enough, the book improves again after the midpoint.

And then, instead of simply closing the story, we get the genre’s infamous late-stage crisis.

Dating Dr. Dil is a pleasant romance. It is presented as a reimagining of The Taming of the Shrew and opens a series called If Shakespeare Were an Auntie.

I looked for Shakespeare.

I did not really find him.

What I mostly found were aunties.

There is good family humour here, several genuinely funny moments, and secondary characters who give the story life. I especially liked Indians Abroad News, the community newspaper whose excerpts appear between chapters. Some are gossip pieces about the viral couple, and others are Mrs. Gupta’s advice columns, where she dispenses relationship advice to parents with the confidence of a national commission of inquiry.

According to Mrs. Gupta, if your children object to marriage, the first step is to understand why.

The second is to convince them that they are wrong.

On a first meeting, it is better not to serve food, only chai, so neither side judges the other according to the plate in front of them.

And a man must compliment his partner’s singing even when she cannot sing.

Silence, apparently, is not an option.

And that may be one of the most important things this book taught me.

So here is my compliment:

the book sings off-key now and then, but it sings with its whole heart.
