The Thorn Birds / Colleen McCullough
I have read this book several times in my life.
When I rated it, I had forgotten how much I enjoyed reading it. I had forgotten how moving it is, how deeply it touches the reader, and how real the emotions feel while you are inside the story.
McCullough knows how to tell a story. Her writing is fluid and absorbing.
This is the story of the Cleary family, poor Irish settlers who make a living with sheep in New Zealand. During a particularly difficult year, the father receives a letter from his wealthy widowed sister in Australia inviting him and his family to manage the herds on Drogheda, one of the great sheep stations of New South Wales.
Mary Carson has never been close to her brother or his family. She is wealthy, miserly and rather cruel. She is attracted to Father Ralph de Bricassart, the local priest, who is twenty-eight when the reader first meets him, and she tries to tempt and control him.
Ralph, by contrast, is fundamentally kind-hearted, though ambitious. He wants influence and power within the Church, partly because he longs to escape what he sees as a forgotten corner of the world.
Father Ralph meets the Cleary family, and in his first encounter with nine-year-old Meggie, their lives become tied together for the rest of their days.
Each section of the novel focuses on a different central figure in the family, or on someone whose choices decisively influence the family’s fate. Each section covers a cluster of years and places the characters against the major historical events of the period.
The story eventually reaches the late 1960s and moves across several countries, though its main locations are Australia, London and Rome.
Ralph and Meggie meet again at crucial crossroads in their lives while the Cleary family is repeatedly transformed by loss, ambition and change.
At times I found it difficult to believe just how much misfortune could fall on one family.
Yet because the novel is also about faith and the power people give to it, that disbelief softens somewhat. The greater the trial, the more dramatic the consequences become.
The book is also deeply concerned with fate.
As it progresses, the sense of determinism grows stronger. The characters make choices, but those choices increasingly seem to carry consequences that were waiting for them all along.
I loved this book.
I loved the characters, and I felt their pain.
At this stage of my life, I can identify strongly with one of its central ideas: what one generation does does not end with that generation. There is a price for the things we choose to do, and sooner or later someone has to pay it.
I can also understand the idea repeated throughout the novel that wealth does not guarantee happiness, and certainly does not guarantee fulfillment.
What I find harder to accept is the suggestion that if only each person had surrendered something for the sake of their true love, fate might somehow have turned out differently.
That seems too simple to me.
Love can change a life.
It cannot always repair destiny.
