משפחה אמריקאית מבוססת כלכלית, ברקלי קליפורניה שחטאה היחידי שההורים היגרו 20 שנים קודם לכן מיפן. המשפחה נאשמת בפעילות אנטי אמריקאית. את האב לוקחים לחקירה בדבר סיוע לאויב. מאוחר יותר הוא ישלח למחנה עצורים. האם והילדים מפונים למחנה במדבר במדינת יוטה.

The storyline began in 1942, during the peak of World War II, the period following the Japanese' devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. This resulted in the US joining the war effort, and the battles on the Japanese front were intense and brutal.
During World War II, American citizens of Japanese descent were unjustly labeled as enemies of the people. This led President Roosevelt to issue a presidential order allowing their imprisonment in camps in the southern United States.
The book details a dark period in the history of the United States.
In Berkeley, California, there was an economically stable American family whose only crime was their Japanese descent. They were wrongfully accused of anti-American actions, and the father was detained for questioning on suspicion of aiding the enemy. Eventually, he was sent to a detention camp while the mother and children relocated to a Utah desert base.
The journey on the train was long, without access to water or amenities. They were forced to settle in a small hut with no conditions or comforts upon arrival. Their living conditions remained substandard throughout the war, leaving them feeling helpless and humiliated. Surrounded by barbed wire fences and soldiers, they could not escape their situation.
This story is narrated from five different perspectives. The mother's viewpoint showcases her struggles in making intricate arrangements to leave. The daughter's perspective recounts the arduous train journey, while the son expresses his experience in the displaced persons' camp and his yearning for his old life and father. Another chapter provides a general overview of returning to a looted house with hostile and estranged neighbors. Lastly, a chapter is dedicated to the father's experience, depicting his humiliation, suffering, helplessness, and frustration.
The father's point of view, which appears at the end of the book, is the most charged. This a minimal but shocking description of the tragedy that occurred in a family who was guilty of being of Japanese descent.
It is undeniable that returning to everyday life after being disconnected for three years is a daunting task. The author effectively portrays the traumatic experience of returning to a reality where they have lost their possessions and must rebuild their lives from scratch.
"But a closer inspection revealed none of these rose bushes were ours. They were too big or too small, or their petals were too bright, and after a while, we gave up and turned to other matters. But we never stopped believing that somewhere, in the backyard Of some stranger, our mother's rose bush blooms wildly, pushing out a succession of perfect red flowers into the late afternoon light."
The writing is insignificant, and any present descriptions merely support the storyline.
