Margaret Atwood is renowned for her dystopian novels, which offer readers a glimpse of the near future and create a sense of simulated familiarity with the reality she portrays.

"And the Heart Goes Last" is also a dystopia. This time, Atwood went on the surreal line – disturbed with flashes of black humor. And she is very successful.

Charmaine and Stan, a young couple, were struck by an economic catastrophe that particularly affected the "Steel Belt" in the US. As a result, they lost all their possessions.

Despite not having any support or lifeline from their family, they both found work – Charmaine in a nursing home and Stan in production floor control. Their hard work paid off, and everything looked promising.

They decided to buy a small house in the suburbs, thinking that their salaries would cover the mortgage. They even planned to expand their family.

Then, the economic tsunami devoured their cards, forcing them to live in their car and fight for survival. Charmaine is employed at a bar, but her earnings are so meager that she can only afford to eat very little once a day and shower only once a month. Despite this, she tries to maintain a positive attitude, although her optimism may not always be healthy. On the other hand, Stan is struggling to find any work that pays as well as Charmaine's job. He has no family except for his brother, Connor, who is not a great person and is involved in petty crime. Connor is also a snitch, and this makes Stan increasingly frustrated and resentful as time goes on.

Hence, when they stumble upon an advertisement for an exceptional renovation initiative, Positron, they immediately decide to participate in the experiment. Despite Connor's cautionary advice against joining the experiment, Stan disregards his warning and signs the papers along with Charmaine. They commit never to abandon Project Positron.

Positron is a privately funded socio-economic experiment that involves a postmodern prison. The experiment's participants alternate between living in "Assimilation" and "Positron" prisons. However, both dimensions of life are fully controlled by the management, and no prohibited content is present, regardless of the pressure.

For one month, individuals residing in the town of "Assimilation." During this time, they are provided with a private residence, work, and get paid. In the second month, they are transferred to "Positron" prison, where they serve as inmates. Meanwhile, their respective partners take up residence in their homes. There is no interaction between the two parties, and any contact is strictly prohibited. Essentially, the individuals are imprisoned in both aspects of their lives – as free citizens in the first month and as prisoners in the second.

Charmaine is enjoying her new life. She loves the aesthetics, atmosphere, and culture of the 1950s. Doris Day's music plays in the background, and she appreciates the discipline and the fact that she has a meaningful job in prison. Initially, she works as a nurse, her favorite role, and later as a teddy bear knitter. These teddy bears will make a comeback in a big way, most absurdly and entertainingly.

Stan is not as passionate about the 1950s theme. While in prison, he works on motorcycles during assimilation and oversees the chicken farm. During their first few months there, Charmaine loses what little sexual vitality she still had, and Stan becomes frustrated with his dying sex life. Upon discovering a note written by Jasmine beneath the fridge, all of Stan's fantasies and desires are triggered.

The note will serve as the opening signal for a chaotic demon dance. As the story unfolds, the reader is drawn into a web of conspiracies, betrayals, and blackmail surrounding the Positron Project. Stan went on a journey dressed as Elvis; he lives in the Elvisorium. He will meet Connor, who dressed up as a giant pea, and everyone will be accompanied by a bodyguard in the form of Marilyn Monroe, who is in love with her teddy bear. Only Charmaine maintains innocence until the end of the book, even when she is forced to do the unthinkable; she will do it out of a naive loyalty that she does not want.

There is no denying that Atwood is a skilled writer. The book is filled with dark humor and extreme violence, portrayed with cynicism and amusement. The plot includes targeted assassinations of those deemed unfit and organ harvesting. However, at times, I found it excessive.

The book's title provides a clue to some of the events in Positron. The story is terrifying, eerie, surreal, and delusional. Additionally, it is impossible to put down once you start reading it, making it all the more captivating.
