הסיני שקרא עיתון בתור לגרדום הוא רומן גרוטסקי וחד, שבו אובססיה רומנטית הופכת למסע פרוע של שקרים, פנטזיה והתפרקות. ריקרדו סטרפסה כותב כאן ספר מצחיק ומאיים כאחד, שחושף את הקלות שבה בני אדם מחליפים אמת בתחושת משמעות.

האובססיה של בסואלדו לגבריאלה היא המנוע העיוור של הספר הסיני שקרא עיתון בתור לגרדום. הוא מאוהב בה עד קצות אצבעותיו, עובדה שגבריאלה מנצלת בציניות פלרטטנית ובדחנית כדי לגרור אותו לתוך רשת של שקרים, סיפור מצוץ מהאצבע שקם על יוצרו. התנועה של הספר היא מהלך קבוע של התפרקות: השעשוע הראשוני הופך למהתלה טראגית-קומית, והשקר הפרטי על צבא שחרור העם הסיני הופך למסע פסיכי במרחבי המערב הפרוע של ארגנטינה. סטרפסה מניח על השולחן את הגיחוך המוחלט שבקיום האנושי, מקום שבו בדידות ופנטזיה נפגשות כדי לייצר מציאות אלטרנטיבית ומדממת.

הפארסה המטורפת הזו חושפת את הקלות שבה אדם מוכן לאמץ כל שקר, ובלבד שיעניק לו תחושת חשיבות או קרבה. בסואלדו אינו מחפש את האמת; הוא מחפש את גבריאלה, והוא מוכן לשלם על כך בשפיות בעולם שאיבד מזמן את הצפון. ככל שהעלילה מתקדמת, המצאותיה של גבריאלה קורמות עור וגידים והופכות למלכודת שאין ממנה דרך חזרה. הצחוק נשאר תקוע בגרון מול הטרגדיה של מי שהופך לכלי משחק בתוך מחזה שהוא עצמו אינו מבין את חוקיו. סטרפסה כותב כאן כתב אישום חריף על כוחו של הדמיון להרוס חיים, ועל האופן שבו הסיפורים שאנו מספרים לעצמנו הופכים בסמיכות מסוכנת למציאות היחידה שקיימת.

Basualdo’s obsession with Gabriela is the blind engine of The Chinaman Who Read a Newspaper While Waiting to Be Hanged. He is in love with her down to his fingertips, a fact Gabriela exploits with flirtatious cynicism and evasiveness, drawing him into a web of lies, a fabricated story that turns against its creator. The novel moves in a steady rhythm of disintegration: the initial amusement turns into a tragicomic farce, and the private lie about the Chinese People’s Liberation Army becomes a psychotic journey across the wild expanses of Argentina. Strafacce lays on the table the absolute ridiculousness of human existence, a place where loneliness and fantasy meet in order to produce an alternative, and bloody, reality.

This mad farce exposes how easily a person is willing to embrace any lie, as long as it grants him a sense of importance or closeness. Basualdo is not looking for the truth; he is looking for Gabriela, and he is willing to pay for that with his sanity in a world that lost its bearings long ago. As the plot advances, Gabriela’s inventions take on flesh and become a trap with no way back. The laughter sticks in the throat in the face of the tragedy of a man turned into a plaything inside a drama whose rules he does not even understand. Strafacce writes here a sharp indictment of the destructive power of imagination, and of the way the stories we tell ourselves slide with dangerous ease into becoming the only reality that exists.
