בהערות ביוגרפיות על הסופר של “החבורה מברלין” נכתב כי ארנסט האפנר היה עיתונאי ועובד סוציאלי. שני היבטים אלה משרתים אותו היטב בכתיבת ספרו היחידי שנמצא ופורסם.
“החבורה מברלין” הוא תיאור אותנטי של המצב החברתי והכלכלי בגרמניה ובפרט בברלין מאמצע שנות ה20 של המאה ה 20 ועד תחילת שנות ה 30. התיאור מלווה באבחנות סוציולוגיות ואנתרופולוגיות מאירות עיניים על התקופה. הוא מתמקד בגורלם של שמונה בני נוער המשתייכים לקבוצת “אחים בדם” ובעיקר בשניים שהצליחו לטפס במדרון ולהחלץ מהג’ונגל של העיר הגדולה כנגד כל הסיכויים: ווילי ולודוויג.
“ייתכן באמת שנפלא לשכב על חופי אוֹסטזֶה או וַנזֶה ולערום על בטן חשופה חול שהתלהט בקרני השמש. אבל לשכב בליל חורף בארגז חול ולהשתמש בחול גבשושי, לח וקר ככרית לראש, כמצע וגם כשמיכה, זה מזעזע כל כך, שאפילו נער שנולד לחיי מצוקה ונמלט מרשויות הרווחה לא היה מסוגל להחזיק מעמד ב”מיטה” כזאת.”
סוף שנות ה 20 אופיינו במשברים כלכליים וחברתיים ברחבי העולם. המצב לא היה שונה בגרמניה ואם כבר חמור יותר.
רפובליקת ווינמר שכוננה לאחר מלחמת העולם הראשונה נדרשה לשלם פיצויים בגין חלקה במלחמה זו. בתחילת שנות ה – 20 הכלכלה הגרמנית נכנסה לסחרור שהוריד את ערך המארק הגרמני וכתוצאה מכך גרמנים רבים איבדו את חסכונותיהם, האבטלה גאתה ורבים הידרדרו לעוני.
בין השנים 1923 – 1929 ממשלת ווינמר הצליחה לייצב את המצב אולם מאמציה ספגו מכה ניצחת עם המשבר הכלכלי העולמי לאחר קריסת הבורסה בניו יורק.
קריסת הבורסה מוטטה את הכלכלה הגרמנית שהסתמכה על סחר חוץ וגלי האבטלה והעוני הכו במדינה בצורה קשה. זהו הרקע לספר שפורסם ב 1923 (וגם הרקע לעליית הנאציזם).
הספר הוא עדות קשה למצב הכלכלי החמור של בני נוער שרובם ברחו מרשויות החוק או הרווחה. משפחות רבות התפרקו בתקופה הזו. הנערים הושלכו למלתעות מערכת הרווחה הגרמנית ולמוסדות בהם התייחסו אליהם באכזריות, בין אם בגלל העדר משפחה תפקודית או בעקבות הסתבכות עם רשויות החוק (ביצוע פשעים קטנים).
הנערים שנמצאים בבריחה והסתתרות תמידית פן ימצאו אותם ויחזירו אותם למוסדות, מוצאים את עצמם בשולי החברה שנאבקת על שרידותה. כמו יתר הפרטים בחברה הזו, גם הם נמצאים גם במאבק שרידות יומיומי, אבל המאבק שלהם מתנהל מעמדה נחותה מלכתחילה. בהעדר עבודה או מקום קבוע לגור בו, הם משוטטים ברחובות. הם רעבים, עייפים, במחסור של מוצרים בסיסיים, טרף קל לנוכלים ונצלנים והם חשופים גם לאלימות קשה. כלל נסיבות אלה מובילים את הנערים למעגל פשיעה שניתן לצאת ממנו בקושי רב.
מעטים נרתמים לסייע למי מהם והם בעיקר זוכים לניכור חברתי ורדיפה. הספר הוא תיאור בוטה של חיים אומללים בצל חברה במצוקה חריפה. בסופו יש נימה דקה של אופטימיות זהירה. אופטימיות שלא הצדיקה את עצמה לנוכח ההיסטוריה.
לאחר עליית הנאציזם לשלטון ב 1932, הספר נאסר לפרסום והיה בין הספרים שנשרפו בגרמניה הנאצית. בשנת 1938 עקבותיו של הסופר נעלמו ועד היום גורלו לא ידוע.

Ernst Hafner, a journalist and social worker, wrote his only published book, “The Gang from Berlin”.
“The Gang from Berlin” authentically depicts Germany’s social and economic conditions, specifically in Berlin, from the mid-1920s to the early 1930s. The book features insightful sociological and anthropological analyses of the period, focusing on the lives of eight teenagers who belonged to the “Blood Brothers” group. The narrative revolves around two of these teenagers, Willy and Ludwig, who manage to overcome the challenges of the big city and achieve success.
During the late 1920s, there were various economic and social crises worldwide, including in Germany. After World War I, the Weimar Republic was established and was required to pay reparations for its involvement in the war. In the early 1920s, the German economy started to decline, causing the value of the German mark to fall. This resulted in many Germans losing their savings, a rise in unemployment, and an increase in poverty.
The Winmer government stabilized the situation between 1923 and 1929, but the global economic crisis after the collapse of the New York Stock Exchange dealt them a decisive blow.
The collapse of the stock market severely impacted the German economy, which heavily relied on foreign trade. This resulted in waves of unemployment and poverty that swept across the country. This was a significant period in history that ultimately led to the rise of Nazism. Against this backdrop, a book was published in 1923.
The book provides a poignant portrayal of the difficult economic circumstances that teenagers faced when they ran away from the law or welfare authorities. This unfortunate period resulted in many families being torn apart. The boys were placed into the hands of the German welfare system and institutions, where they were subjected to cruel treatment. This was either because they lacked a functional family or because they had become involved with law enforcement by committing minor crimes.
The boys are constantly moving and hiding, trying to avoid being found and returned to institutions. They find themselves living on the fringes of society, which is itself struggling to survive. Like everyone else in this society, they face daily struggles to survive. However, they are at a disadvantage from the start, with no work or permanent place to stay. They wander the streets, hungry, tired, and lacking basic necessities, making them easy targets for crooks and exploiters, and exposing them to severe violence. All of these circumstances lead the boys into a cycle of crime that is incredibly difficult to break out of.
Only a small percentage of people offer their help to those in need, and unfortunately, they are frequently shunned and mistreated by the rest of society. The book presents a clear picture of a miserable life in a community that desperately requires reform. Nonetheless, the book concludes on a hopeful but prudent tone, despite the fact that history may not necessarily support such optimism.
After rising to power in 1932, the Nazi party banned and burned the author’s book in Nazi Germany. In 1938, the author disappeared without a trace and his fate remains unknown.
