Please scroll down for an English review.

The Love Haters / Katherine Center

I read The Love Haters by Katherine Center, a pleasant, light, and amusing romantic comedy with a likable heroine, a summery setting, and a man who looks excellent in uniform. Most of the time, the novel is funny, easy to read, and entertaining.

Katie works as a producer and video editor for a company that creates promotional films for organizations. The company is facing a wave of layoffs, and Cole, her team leader, offers her an opportunity that might save her job: replacing him on a recruitment video for a Coast Guard rescue unit.

The video is supposed to focus on Tom “Hutch” Hutcheson, a rescue swimmer who became famous after a video of him saving Jennifer Aniston’s dog went viral.

Katie has only a few minor problems.

She cannot swim, even though the job requires her to film in and around the water. She has also avoided wearing a swimsuit for years because of a deep struggle with her body image, which began during childhood.

In addition, Hutch agreed to appear in the video mainly because Cole was supposed to film it. Cole is his brother, and there has been tension between them for years. The project was meant to give them an opportunity to reconnect and resolve some of their differences.

Katie accepts the assignment and hides from Hutch both the fact that she cannot swim and her connection to Cole. As filming progresses, she and Hutch grow closer, and she becomes involved in the complicated relationship between the two brothers. At the same time, she is forced to confront the way she sees her own body.

Although I enjoyed reading the novel, Hutch felt flat to me. He is handsome, professional, brave, sensitive, and moral. He seems to have stepped directly off an assembly line producing romantic heroes I would happily meet. Some of this flatness may come from the fact that the story is told entirely from Katie’s point of view, and she sees him mainly as an ideal.

Katie and Hutch spend very little time together. A large part of their interaction takes place while she is filming him at work. They talk, grow closer, and even, heaven forbid, kiss. Twice. Then they fall in love.

I have no objection to clean romance. Love does not need sex scenes in order to feel believable. It does need time, friction, intimacy, and genuine knowledge of another person. One or two weeks, two kisses, and several good conversations can create strong attraction, excitement, and perhaps the sense that something promising is beginning. They do not create love.

At some point, I realized that I had received a self-help book disguised as a romantic comedy.

Katie has a great difficulty with her body image and with the way she sees herself. It developed over many years, first because of the treatment she received from her stepmother and later because of her relationship with a former boyfriend who became famous. After she was photographed beside him at an awards ceremony, strangers decided that she was an easy target and filled the internet with cruel comments.

Women’s body image is an important subject. In this novel, it is addressed repeatedly through affirmations and motivational lessons.

Katie’s friend teaches her to love herself, make room for love, recognize her beauty, and believe that she is worthy. Rue tries to help her love her body through clothes designed to make her feel beautiful and present.

I have nothing against empowerment. Of course not. I was simply looking for romance. At the age of fifty-four, I am already naturally empowered. I do not need a workshop.

The author’s note at the end of the novel strengthened this impression. Katherine Center explains that she sees stories as tools for healing, growth, change, and finding an anchor. She describes love stories as places of grace, safety, belonging, healing from the past, and discovering the good in others and in ourselves.

It is a pleasant idea that gives romance novels far too much credit.

Love stories can deal with grace, belonging, and healing. They can also deal with selfishness, illusion, power, dependence, convenience or temporary attraction. Romance is not a certified therapist, a rehabilitation center, and a social services department at the same time.

I felt that the relationship between Katie and Hutch was not developed enough to carry all the author’s ambitions. Hutch is meant to help Katie change the way she sees herself, but to a large extent, he remains a symbol proving that she is worthy of love.

The ending did not convince me either. The novel presents it as the beginning of a stable, established relationship, but after a connection built in such a short time, I found it difficult to believe the characters had already reached that point.

Even so, The Love Haters is pleasant and amusing. Katherine Center knows how to write optimistic, readable, and comforting novels. Had she trusted the story instead of asking the romance to serve as a healing journey, a lesson in self-acceptance, and a method for saving the world, the book would have worked better.

I am satisfied with a couple who fall in love convincingly.

I did not ask for an affirmation. I asked for chemistry.
