Vanity Fair/ William Makepeace Thackeray

This is the story of two friends: Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley.

Their lives over the years, their changing fortunes, and the consequences of the choices they make.

Becky Sharp is born into poverty. After leaving school, she spends some time with Amelia Sedley’s wealthy family, where she meets Amelia and her brother Jos. Becky becomes close to Amelia and immediately tries to encourage the wealthy but painfully shy Jos to propose to her.

George Osborne, Amelia’s fiancé, undermines her efforts, and Becky eventually leaves the Sedley household to work as a governess for the Crawley family.

At this point, Becky is presented as beautiful, intelligent, persuasive, and extremely skilled at charming the men around her.

Amelia, in contrast, is kind-hearted but pale beside Becky, whose vitality and charisma dominate almost every room she enters.

At the Crawley household, Becky charms Sir Pitt, who eventually proposes to her.

She has to refuse because she has secretly married his son, Rawdon Crawley.

Rawdon is a charming spendthrift and a heavy gambler.

His marriage to Becky costs him the inheritance he expected from his wealthy aunt. She refuses to change her mind even when he tries to reconcile with her and eventually leaves her money to his already wealthy brother.

Rawdon and Becky are therefore left with very little.

Meanwhile Amelia’s fortunes collapse.

Her family loses its money and goes bankrupt.

George Osborne’s father threatens to disinherit George if he marries Amelia and explicitly forbids the marriage.

After pressure from his friend William Dobbin, who is himself deeply in love with Amelia, George defies his father, marries Amelia, and loses his financial support.

The next major stage brings Becky and Rawdon together with George, Amelia and Dobbin in Brussels shortly before the men leave to fight the French.

George, already bored with Amelia and attracted to Becky, suggests that Becky run away with him.

Amelia sees the flirtation between her friend and her husband and breaks off her relationship with Becky.

On the night before the battle, George briefly seems to recognize how kind and devoted his wife has been to him.

By this stage, Becky is clearly established as manipulative and almost entirely without boundaries when it comes to flirtation.

Her social position and Rawdon’s rise are partly due to Becky’s ability to cultivate wealthy men, accept expensive gifts, and convert social attention into material advantage.

They also live far beyond their means and routinely avoid paying the people who support their lifestyle.

When war breaks out, Amelia suffers a nervous collapse from fear for her husband.

Becky, meanwhile, remains remarkably calm and even profits from the chaos.

Jos Sedley’s cowardice and selfishness are also exposed.

He wants to flee Brussels without taking responsibility for his distraught sister.

He is a wealthy man who has done almost nothing to support his parents after their financial collapse, yet is willing to pay Becky an enormous sum for two horses simply so that he can escape.

After the battle, George Osborne is dead.

Amelia gives birth to their son and names him George.

William Dobbin supports Amelia financially through her poverty, partly because he loves her and partly because he feels responsible for helping persuade George to marry her.

When he tries to reveal his feelings, Amelia refuses to see them.

She idealizes her dead husband and remains completely devoted to his memory.

Dobbin eventually leaves for India for many years.

Amelia dedicates herself to her son, who gradually becomes spoiled.

Becky and Rawdon also have a son.

Becky shows very little interest in the child and gives him almost none of the affection he needs.

At the same time, her social position continues to rise through her flirtations with wealthy men, particularly Lord Steyne, who gives her money and expensive gifts.

Rawdon remains loyal to Becky and does not fully understand what is happening.

Then, after Becky refuses to help him when he is imprisoned for debt, he returns home unexpectedly and discovers the money, the jewelry, and the disturbing intimacy between Becky and Lord Steyne.

He also discovers just how unstable their finances really are.

They owe enormous sums to servants and tradespeople, and there have been rumors about Becky’s behavior for a long time.

Rawdon challenges Steyne to a duel.

Instead, Steyne uses his influence to have Rawdon sent away as governor of a distant island.

Rawdon leaves Becky.

She is pushed out of respectable society and begins wandering through Europe, where her financial and social position deteriorates steadily.

Eventually Amelia is forced to send her son to live with his wealthy grandfather.

The separation devastates her, but she has little choice.

When Dobbin finally returns after many years, he once again confesses his love.

Amelia rejects him again.

Despite this, Dobbin works with old Mr. Osborne on her behalf, who eventually changes his will before his death.

He leaves half of his fortune to young George and provides Amelia with a comfortable income that restores her social position.

Jos Sedley also returns with Dobbin.

Years of wealth have done nothing to improve him.

He remains lazy, selfish and unwilling to make any sacrifice for his family.

Amelia, Jos and Dobbin travel to Germany, where Jos encounters Becky and once again falls completely under her spell.

Becky is no longer the dazzling young woman she once was.

She is poor, isolated and damaged.

Jos brings Becky and Amelia back together.

Becky tells Amelia her version of everything that has happened, including how her son was supposedly taken from her, although during the years before that she showed very little desire to see him.

She describes Rawdon’s family as cruel and rejecting while conveniently omitting many of her own betrayals.

Dobbin knows far more of the truth and tries to explain it to Amelia and Jos, but they turn against him.

After years of devotion, Dobbin finally understands that Amelia has once again chosen an illusion over him.

He confronts her and tells her exactly what he thinks.

At the same time, Becky listens from behind the door.

She knows the truth.

She says nothing.

Dobbin leaves the woman to whom he has devoted his life and finally recognizes the limits of her understanding and her capacity for love.

In the final part of the novel, Amelia eventually marries Dobbin after discovering the truth about George Osborne.

Becky lives with Jos Sedley, who follows her as unthinkingly as ever.

He takes out a life-insurance policy that names Becky as one of the beneficiaries.

After his suspicious death, the insurance company challenges the claim but eventually pays her share.

Amelia lives with Dobbin, but the relationship is not the romantic reward she once could have had.

Dobbin seems more emotionally invested in their daughter than in the wife he worshipped for so many years.

Becky eventually loses much of her money again.

Although the ending has superficially happy elements, the novel left me deeply sad.

Every major character carries serious flaws that cannot simply be ignored.

Amelia remains emotionally limited.

She marries Dobbin but does not seem to understand that he no longer loves her with the same unquestioning intensity he once did.

Becky remains manipulative and calculating.

And Jos Sedley never truly changes, even though he knows perfectly well that Becky is dangerous.

That may be exactly Thackeray’s point.

This is, after all, A Novel without a Hero.
