The Handmaid’s Tale #1
The Handmaid’s Tale / Margaret Atwood
The United States after a conservative revolution that abolishes the Constitution and strips women of their civil rights. This new state is ruled by religious fundamentalists and is called Gilead. At its head stands an elite of male military Commanders, while women are valued according to their ability to conceive and bear children.
These are years of declining fertility and birth rates for several reasons: personal choice and the use of contraception, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, and genetic damage caused by radioactive and chemical contamination.
In this world, fertile women are reduced to reproductive vessels and assigned to the households of Commanders in order to bear children for them. Women who are considered infertile are sent to the Colonies, notorious places where they slowly die while clearing radioactive waste.
A separate authority supervises the women: the Aunts, whose role is to suppress any sign of rebellion or resistance.
Offred is the Handmaid assigned to Commander Fred. She records her time in his household and her relationships with the Commander, his wife, and the people around them.
Before Gilead, Offred was married to Luke. But after the establishment of the Republic of Gilead, second marriages were declared adulterous. Women in such marriages could be arrested, their children taken away and placed with childless families, while the women themselves were subjected to re-education and assigned as Handmaids to members of the ruling elite.
This is Offred’s third posting as a Handmaid, and there is good reason to believe that the Commander is sterile.
He gradually begins an illicit relationship with her and, in exchange, offers small luxuries from the world that existed before Gilead: magazines, hand cream, a cigarette, and eventually even takes her to a hotel.
At the same time, his wife, who understands that he may be the infertile one — although in Gilead men are officially never sterile and only women can be blamed for infertility — offers Offred another possibility through the household driver, Nick. Offred also develops a close relationship with him.
Once a month, the Ceremony takes place, with the Commander’s wife present. Any expression of affection between the Commander and Offred is forbidden. She is not treated as a person but as a vessel for his future child.
Her movements are closely monitored, and much of ordinary life is forbidden. Apart from a daily shopping trip, always carried out in pairs, her existence is largely one long stretch of monotony. Beneath that apparent stillness, however, strong currents are moving, threatening to destroy the supposedly stable reality in which she lives.
One problem I have with Atwood’s writing is its monotony. Even at the most dramatic and turbulent moments in the novel, the tone barely changes.
Sometimes this becomes a real problem, because while reading, you do not always realize that the storm has arrived until you are already inside it. The same uniformity can also create boredom in passages devoted to landscape and philosophical reflection.
Atwood’s brilliance, however, is particularly evident in the final section of the novel: the “Historical Notes,” presented as an academic discussion held roughly 150 years later, after Offred’s account has been discovered.
That chapter adds perspective and depth to the novel and transforms the events that came before it in powerful ways.
In any case, I still prefer the book’s former Hebrew title, Ma’aseh Hashifcha, roughly The Handmaid’s Account, to the newer title, Sipura Shel Shifcha, The Handmaid’s Tale. It is true that this is Offred’s story, but in sound and meaning the earlier Hebrew title feels more fitting to me.
Highly recommended, but don't expect a cheerful summer read to cool down a hot day.
