Of Human Bondage נראה כרומן חניכה קלאסי, מסלול החיים של ילד יתום עם רגל פגומה שמחפש את דרכו בעולם. בפועל, זה ספר הרבה יותר אכזרי מזה. סומרסט מוהם כותב כאן לא רק על צמיחה, אלא על שעבוד, השפלה, אובססיה והדרך שבה אהבה מעוותת יכולה לרושש אדם כלכלית, נפשית ומוסרית.

הספר הוא סיפור חניכה וצמיחה של פיליפ קארי. הסיפור מתחיל כאשר פיליפ בגיל 9 ומסתיים כשהוא בן 30 ובמהלכו פיליפ עובר מהפכים ויסוריים קשים.

בגיל 9 מתייתם פיליפ קארי מהוריו ונשלח לבית דודו הכומר.
הדוד חסר ילדים ואינו יודע כיצד להכיל את קיומו של ילד בחייו. בניגוד לדודה, שמפגינה רוך ודאגה כלפי פיליפ, הדוד מפגין כלפי פיליפ קרירות ונוקשות והיחס הזה ישפיע עליו לאורך כל ימי חייו.
פיליפ הסובל מפגם אורטופדי ברגל, נשלח להתחנך בבית ספר בתנאי פנימיה. הילדים צוחקים עליו והוא הופך מופנם יותר מאשר היה. כשהוא מסיים את לימודי בית הספר הוא מחפש את דרכו בחיים ומחליט להתנסות כצייר אמן בפריז ומאוחר יותר כפקיד העוסק בתחום ראיית החשבון, תחום מתפתח מאוד. בשני המקרים הוא מוצא שהמקצועות הללו לא מתאימים לו.
לבסוף הוא מחליט להיות רופא כאביו. מלכתחילה, הדוד מתנגד קשות לדרכו של פיליפ ומעוניין שילך בדרך הכמורה. כשפיליפ מתנגד לכך ופועל בניגוד לדעתו, הדוד למעשה מסיר ידיו מפיליפ ונותן לו לחיות את חייו מבלי שיתעניין ביכולתו לממן את בחירתו. ואכן בתקופה מסויימת, בגלל שיקול דעת מוטעה, פיליפ מאבד את כל כספו ונאלץ לחיות ברחוב עד שנמצאת לו עבודה כזבן בחנות.

במהלך הפרקים, מתאר הסופר כל מהמורה וקושי בחייו של פיליפ. הוא מתאר את במאבקו לשרוד ואת הלבטים שלו הן ביחסיו עם האנשים והן בבחירות שהוא עושה כתעסוקה וזאת עד שהוא מצליח לגבש לעצמו את דרך החיים המתאימה לו. כמובן שלאורך הסיפור הנושא הכלכלי מטריד את פיליפ מאוד, אבל לא רק.

למרות כל הסבל והקשיים הכלכליים והנפשיים של פיליפ, לדעתי הם לא לב הסיפור ולא לב הספר.

לב הספר עוסק ביחסיו של פיליפ עם מילדרד. מילדרד היתה מלצרית כשפיליפ פוגש אותה. היא גסת רוח, אנוכית ונצלנית. היא בעיקר חסרת מוסר והעיניין היחידי שלה בגברים הוא כסף ופיליפ הוא טרף קל עבורה. הוא מתאהב בה בטירוף חושים, באובססיביות שמובילה אותו פעם אחר פעם לאבדון.

מילדרד שרואה את הפגיעות של פיליפ ורואה עד כמה הוא מאוהב בה פוגעת בו פעם אחר פעם ומנצלת אותו ואת נדיבות ליבו עד שהיא מביאה אותו כמעט לפשיטת רגל. רק לאחר שהיא פשוטו כמשמעו רומסת אותו בלי רחמים הוא מצליח איכשהו להתפכח ולהתקדם בחייו אבל גם אז הוא לא מצליח להשתחרר ממנה וכשהיא חוזרת, הגם שהוא כבר לא אוהב אותה ולא אובססיבי כלפיה הוא מקבל אותה ועוזר לה שוב כלכלית וזאת מתוך נדיבות ליבו. היא בתמורה, שוב פוגעת בו באופן מרושע ואכזרי. ולבסוף עוזבת אותו לנפשו כשהיא פונה לדרך הזנות.

רק לאחר שפיליפ מגיע לקרקעית ומאבד הכל, הוא מבין שההתנהלות שלו מובילה אותו אל עבר פי פחת. הוא מקבל על עצמו עבודה בחנות כזבן ולאחר מותו של דודו הוא חוזר להשלים את לימודיו כרופא. הוא מתפכח מחלומותיו לטייל בעולם ומבין שהחלומות הללו מייצגים את הרצון שלו לברוח ואת העדר הקשר שלו למקום ולמשפחה.

ספר ארוך מאוד. יש בו חלקים מעניינים יותר וחלקים מעניינים פחות. הסופר אינו חס על פיליפ ומערכת יחסיו עם מילדרד מובילה אותו פעם אחר פעם לשפל נמוך יותר שהרבה זמן לא קראתי. בכל סבב נדמה שהנה תם ונשלם הסיפור ומסתבר שמילדרד זה כמו נחום תקום, חוזרת לסיבוב אכזרי יותר עד למכת הנוק אאוט שמונחתת על פיליפ, שבה הוא מבין שהוא צריך לשנות את דרכו, אין לו ברירה אחרת יגווע ברעב.

החלקים של מילדרד, נורה וסאלי כתובים באופן מרתק ביותר ושואבים פנימה. החלקים של הלבטים קצת פחות עיניינו אותי ולכן נתתי לספר ציון 4. סך הכל ספר מאוד קולח יחסית לאורכו. במהלך הקריאה ריחמתי על פיליפ, כעסתי עליו, כעסתי על מילדרד, חיבבתי את סאלי ואת נורה. כל אלה אומרים שהכתיבה ממש מוצלחת.

The novel is a coming-of-age story tracing the growth of Philip Carey. It begins when Philip is nine and ends when he is thirty, and throughout it he undergoes difficult transformations and painful ordeals.

At the age of nine, Philip is orphaned and sent to live with his uncle, a clergyman. His uncle has no children and does not know how to make room in his life for a child. Unlike his aunt, who shows Philip tenderness and care, the uncle treats him with coldness and severity, and that attitude shapes Philip for the rest of his life.

Philip, who suffers from an orthopedic defect in his foot, is sent to boarding school. The other boys laugh at him, and he becomes even more withdrawn than he already was. After finishing school, he searches for his path in life. He first tries to become a painter in Paris, and later works as a clerk in the growing field of accountancy. In both cases, he discovers that the profession does not suit him.

Eventually, he decides to become a doctor like his father. From the beginning, his uncle strongly opposes Philip’s path and wants him to enter the clergy. When Philip resists and chooses otherwise, his uncle effectively washes his hands of him and lets him live his life without caring whether he can afford his decisions. And indeed, at one point, because of poor judgment, Philip loses all his money and is forced to live on the streets until he finds work as a shop assistant.

Throughout the novel, Maugham describes every obstacle and hardship in Philip’s life. He traces his struggle to survive and his inner debates, both in his relationships with others and in the choices he makes about work, until he finally begins to shape a life that fits him. Naturally, money is a major source of anxiety for Philip, but it is not the heart of the novel.

To my mind, the heart of the book lies in Philip’s relationship with Mildred. Mildred is a waitress when Philip meets her. She is coarse, selfish, and exploitative. She is, above all, morally empty, and the only thing that interests her in men is money. Philip is easy prey for her. He falls in love with her in a frenzy, with an obsession that leads him toward ruin again and again.

Mildred sees Philip’s vulnerability and knows just how deeply he is in love with her. She hurts him repeatedly and exploits both him and his generosity until she nearly drives him into bankruptcy. Only after she quite literally tramples him without mercy does he somehow begin to recover and move forward with his life. But even then, he cannot entirely free himself from her. When she returns, even though he no longer loves her and is no longer obsessed, he takes her back and helps her financially once more, out of sheer generosity. In return, she wounds him again with cruelty and malice, and finally leaves him when she turns to prostitution.

Only when Philip reaches rock bottom and loses everything does he understand that his way of living is leading him straight toward destruction. He takes a job in a shop, and after his uncle’s death, he returns to finish his medical studies. He lets go of his dreams of traveling the world and understands that those dreams represented his desire to escape and his lack of connection to place and family.

It is a very long novel. Some parts are more interesting, others less so. Maugham does not spare Philip, and the relationship with Mildred drags him to lower and lower depths in a way I had not encountered in a long time. Each time it seems the story with her has finally ended, she returns like some malignant resurrection, for another, crueler round, until the final knockout blow that forces Philip to understand he must change his course or he will simply starve.

The sections involving Mildred, Norah, and Sally are extraordinarily compelling and absorbing. The sections of inner deliberation interested me less, which is why I gave the book 4 stars. All in all, it is remarkably readable for such a long novel. While reading, I pitied Philip, got angry at him and at Mildred, and liked both Sally and Norah. All of that is proof that the writing is truly successful.
