The first story, "Un amor para toda la vida", which gives the collection its title, is an excellent, sharp and unsettling story about a love triangle that follows its three protagonists from adolescence throughout their lives.
The story begins in 1969 in the village of Ramallo, when the protagonists are thirteen years old.
Bruno, the narrator, is Lalo's friend and part of a group of boys led by him. When Lisa arrives in the village with her parents, who move every few years because of her father's work, she changes their lives. She is young, outspoken, self-confident, and her charisma fascinates them.
After twenty-one days, she and Lalo are officially a couple, and Lalo, completely captivated by her, begins to drift away from the group. Lisa does not. She becomes close to Bruno and, whether he wants it or not, turns him into the third point in their triangle.
That relationship will continue for thirty years, even after Lisa leaves, even after Bruno leaves, and even during long periods when they do not see one another. Hanging over it all is a secret that weighs heavily on the narrator's conscience.
It is a powerful story about the meaning of friendship and loyalty, and about the gap between promises and reality, between adolescent dreams and adulthood, and the influence a first love can continue to have on our adult lives.
I would give this story five stars.
The next story in the collection is "Cynicism", a kind of cynical and merciless coming-of-age story. Bizzio spares his characters nothing, describing the sexual awakening of two teenagers, Álvaro and Rocío, with deliberate harshness, only to drag the experience back down to earth and crush it.
I did not like the story. The coarseness with which the author treats the characters, their feelings and, incidentally, the reader, felt unnecessary to me.
Overall, I think this is a collection worth reading, and the quality of the first story is excellent.
