In Chancery/ John Galsworthy

The Forsyte Chronicles #2

In Chancery/ John Galsworthy

The novel begins twelve years after the events of the previous book.

After old Jolyon’s death, Irene inherits £15,000 and is finally able to live independently. She leaves for Italy and later returns to England.

Young Jolyon manages the money left to her, although he has not seen her for years.

Soames wants a son.

He meets Annette and begins thinking seriously about divorcing Irene, but there is a problem: he has no straightforward grounds for divorce because Irene has had no lover since Bosinney.

Young Jolyon becomes increasingly sympathetic toward Irene and less capable of seeing Soames’s side of the situation.

Irene betrayed Soames and then left him, yet Jolyon’s feelings and the old divisions within the Forsyte family make it increasingly difficult for him to regard his cousin objectively.

Soames meets Irene hoping to persuade her to cooperate with a divorce.

During the meeting, however, his old obsession returns and he changes direction.

Instead of simply wanting freedom, he begins wanting Irene back as his wife.

Irene refuses.

Even when Soames tells her that he wants a son and begs her to return, she tells him she would rather die.

At the same time, young Jolyon’s feelings for Irene become increasingly intense.

Eventually Soames discovers that Irene has gone to Paris and that Jolyon has followed her.

He travels there and again pressures Irene to return to him.

She refuses and eventually returns to Jolyon’s home.

When Soames discovers that Irene is living at Robin Hill, he begins divorce proceedings against Irene and Jolyon.

In one final confrontation, Soames arrives at Jolyon’s house and finds Irene playing the piano for him.

When he confronts them, Irene claims that she and Jolyon are lovers.

Jolyon joins the lie, hoping that one day it may become true.

And eventually it does.

That same evening, after Soames leaves, Jolyon receives devastating news.

His son Jolly has died of illness while serving in South Africa.

Jolly had joined the military after challenging Val Dartie, the son of Soames’s sister Winifred, who had fallen in love with Jolly’s younger sister Holly.

Jolly, deeply influenced by the conflicts and loyalties within the Forsyte family, had tried to prevent the marriage by turning the matter into a challenge between the two young men.

After Irene and Soames are finally divorced, Soames marries Annette.

She gives birth to a daughter.

Shortly before that, Irene gives birth to Jolyon’s son, Jon.

I have to admit that in this novel I felt genuinely sorry for Soames.

His cousin is living in the house that had originally been intended for Soames and Irene.

Despite the violence of the previous novel, Irene makes very little effort to help bring their marriage to a reasonable legal conclusion, and she does not always acknowledge the part her own choices played in the long collapse of the relationship.

She had already betrayed Soames with Bosinney and then abandoned the marriage entirely.

In this book, Irene struck me as harsher.

She never loved Soames and probably should never have married him in the first place.

Yet she allows the situation to remain unresolved for years and refuses to give him the clear grounds for divorce that would free them both.

Soames becomes increasingly obsessive.

He wants a son, and Irene’s refusal to return to him or cooperate in ending the marriage feeds that obsession.

More than that, her dependence on Jolyon deepens the split within the Forsyte family.

Young Jolyon, meanwhile, falls in love with Irene and increasingly acts against his cousin, partly because of old family resentments and partly because he is blinded by his feelings for her.

Jolly’s death then adds another layer of tragedy to a family already fractured by old grievances, romantic choices and inherited loyalties.

The volume also includes Awakening, an interlude focusing on the early childhood of Jon, the son of Irene and young Jolyon.

Once again, the characters behave in ways that are deeply frustrating and often unpleasant, while their children are born into a family already divided by conflicts they did not create.

I found this novel somewhat weaker than The Man of Property.

There is less dramatic force in the plot, and much of the story develops through divorce, negotiation and emotional stalemate rather than the sharper confrontations of the first book.

Still, it is essential to the larger saga because this is where the old conflict stops belonging only to Soames and Irene.

It becomes an inheritance.
