כשהתחלתי לקרוא את ההרצאות בקורס Early American Sex Scandals, היה נדמה לי שאני קוראת בצהובון אקדמי שמתחפש לשיעור בהיסטוריה. שם צהבהב עם נופך רומנטי, שערוריות מין ודמויות עם שמות שלא אומרים לי כלום (כמובן חוץ מהנשיאים שאת השמות שלהם הכרתי). אבל המשכתי בקריאה כי הייתה גלומה בו הבטחה להבין דרך סיפורים שערורייתיים משהו עמוק יותר על התרבות האמריקאית המוקדמת.
לקח לי זמן להבין מהי מגמת העומק של הקורס, אבל כשזה התחיל להתבהר, התמונה השתנתה.

נשים, גם כשהן הקורבן, הן נאשמות. גברים שממנפים שערורייה לטובתם. קהילה שנקרעת בין אידיאלים מוסריים לבין צביעות שמשרתת את בעלי הכוח.
ככל שמתקדמים בהרצאות, מתחילים להבין שהשערוריות אינן הסיפור המרכזי. הן רק מראה. המרצה משתמשת בהן כדי להמחיש כיצד חברה האמריקאית עיצבה את זהותה דרך מיניות, מגדר, יחסי שליטה, ומאבקים על מושגים כמו כבוד, אמת וסמכות. כל שערורייה משמשת מקרה בוחן לתרבות שעדיין מעצבת את עצמה: מה מותר, מה אסור, ולמי יש בכלל זכות להכריע.
התרומה של הקורס אינה רק בלימוד פרשות מההיסטוריה אלא בהצעת דרך חדשה לקרוא את ההיסטוריה עצמה דרך הסאב-טקסט : מה שנכתב בין השורות. המרצה בוחנת כיצד מיניות ותשוקה נוצלו כדי להצדיק דיכוי או להפיל יריב פוליטי, איך נשים הפכו לכלי בידי המערכת, ואיך כל זה מהדהד גם היום.
בהתחלה, כשלא הכרתי את רוב הדמויות, הרגשתי מרוחקת. אך ככל שהרצאות הצטברו והנושאים התחילו לחזור, הבנתי שזה לא רק שיעור היסטוריה אלא ניסיון לבנות תודעה. זו לא רק שאלה של מי שכב עם מי, אלא של מה זה מוסר ציבורי, למי מותר להיכשל, ואילו כוחות מכתיבים את הסיפור שנזכור.

When I began Early American Sex Scandals, it felt as though I had stumbled into an academic tabloid disguised as a history course.
The title sounded sensational, the stories promised sex scandals, and most of the names meant nothing to me, apart from the presidents I already knew. Still, I continued because the course seemed to promise something more substantial: a chance to understand early American culture through the scandals it produced.
It took me some time to recognize the deeper direction of the course, but once it became clear, the entire picture changed.
Each lecture focuses on a different case. Some are well known, such as the Reynolds affair involving Alexander Hamilton or the relationship between Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson. Others have largely faded from public memory, including stories involving Aaron Burr, Gouverneur Morris and the church scandal known as Beecher-Tilton.
What connects them is not sex itself, but the use of sex as an arena of power, morality and politics.
Almost every case reveals more than an illicit or troubling relationship. It also reveals how American society responded to it: what it was willing to see, whom it condemned, and who emerged from the scandal stronger than before.
The lecturer exposes patterns that repeat themselves.
Women are blamed even when they are the victims. Men turn scandal to their advantage. Communities are torn between moral ideals and hypocrisy that protects the powerful.
As the lectures accumulate, it becomes clear that the scandals are not the central story.
They are a mirror.
The lecturer uses them to show how American society shaped its identity through sexuality, gender, relationships of control, and struggles over concepts such as honor, truth and authority.
Each scandal becomes a case study in a culture still defining itself: what is permitted, what is forbidden, and who has the right to decide.
The value of the course lies not only in teaching forgotten historical cases, but in offering a different way of reading history itself, through its subtext and through what remains unwritten between the lines.
The lecturer examines how sexuality and desire were used to justify oppression or destroy a political rival, how women became tools within larger systems of power, and how these patterns still echo today.
At first, because I knew so few of the figures involved, I felt distanced from the material.
But as the lectures built on one another and the themes began to repeat, I understood that this was not merely a history lesson. It was an attempt to shape historical awareness.
The real question is not simply who slept with whom.
It is what public morality means, who is allowed to fail, and which forces determine the story we will remember.
Beneath all the stories of bodies and desire, another body emerges entirely: the political body, through which history is written and the voices that did not fit the official narrative are silenced.
