הדמות של בי הייתה קשה מאוד לחיבוב, הקשר בינה לבין אלי לא הרגיש אמין, והמהלך המוסרי של הספר בעייתי בעיניי.
הספר ניסה להיות סיפור על חמלה וגאולה, אבל מבחינתי הוא נשאר לא אמין, לא נעים לקריאה ומאכזב מאוד.
ממש לא אהבתי את הספר, לא סבלתי את הדמויות והסוף הגיע מאוחר מידי ומעט מידי עבורי.
בוקר אחד חייה של בי מתהפכים עליה. בעלה נפטר זה מכבר והותיר לה מעט חסכונות. בגיל 70 אחרי שהיא נופלת קורבן למזימה טלפונית שמרוקנת לה את חשבון הבנק (בשל תמימות ואפילו טיפשות שלה) היא נאלצת לעזוב את אתר הקראוונים שבו התגוררה בעשורים האחרונים ולצאת לדרך במיני ואן שלה.
לבי אין כסף, אין כישורים ויש לה רבע טנק. היא יצירתית כדי לשכנע צעיר למלא לה טנק דלק בתואנות שגנבו לה את הארנק, אבל היא לא יצירתית למצוא עבודה ולהשתכר. תחושת הקורבניות שלה מובילה אותה לגנוב פלאפונים מאנשים שמרחמים עליה ומאפשרים לה לבצע שיחה בסלולרי שלהם. בקיצור היא הופכת להיות כמו הגנבים שניצלו את התמימות שלה ורוקנו לה את חשבון הבנק דבר שכמובן לא מצדיק את ההתנהגות של בי.

כשהיא מבינה שהיא לא נפלה קורבן היא מנסה להתפטר מאלי וכשזה לא מצליח לה היא מתכננת לנצל אותה לגניבות ומעשי מירמה. פשוט מהפח אל הפחת. בי היא לא בן אדם טוב, בטח שלא ישר ולאורך הספר היא חוזרת ומוכיחה את תכונות האופי העלובות והנאלחות שלה.
היא מקבלת בשוויון נפש ובשימחה את התרומה הכספית של אלי ורק בזכות הכסף הזה היא מוכנה להמשיך לסייע לאלי, גם אחרי שהיא שומעת את הסיפור המחריד שלה.
רק בחלק האחרון של הספר חל שינוי באופן שבו בי מתייחסת לאלי אבל אני חושבת שהיא פשוט הבינה שאלי היא תרנגולת מטילה ביצי זהב ולראיה כשאימא של אלי חוזרת, אלי כופה עליה את בי ומודיעה לה שבי עוברת לגור איתן בחדר האורחים. נכון שבי החזירה לאלי את הדברים שלה וגם העידה לטובתה בבית משפט, יחד עם זאת הסיפור לא אמין בהתחשב בעובדה שהן מכירות 8 ימים ושהרקע להישארותן יחד היא העובדה שאלי סיפקה את הכסף שכל כף חסר לבי.
הקריאה בספר לא נעימה, לא ממלאת את הלב ולא כייפית. היא מצביעה על החולשות הנוראיות של מערכת הרווחה לילד, על האדישות והאפטיות של הגורמים השונים שלא רואים בכל ילד מקרה אנושי, עולם ומלואו ונפש להצליל אלא עוד מקרה מצער בשרשרת מקרים מצערים שהם מטפלים בהם בתת תנאים וללא משאבים. מאוד הפתיע אותי שגם הדמות של אלי היתה כזו לוחמת צדק ויושר אחרי כל מה שעבר עליה וגם ההודאה של העובדת הסוציאלית שלה במחדליה בבית משפט. מניסיוני נציגי המדינה לא ממהרים ובטח שלא מודים במחדליהם.
גם מאוד הפריע לי המהלך של הסופרת לשים את ההתנהגויות של אלי באותה רמה של ההתנהגויות של בי, כאשר זו האחרונה מנסה ללמד את אלי לקח.
בי היא אישה בת 70, עצמאית שיכולה למצוא עבודה, להשתכר ולחיות בכבוד אבל היא בוחרת לשקר ולרמות ולגנוב לעומת אלי, ילד בת 15 שאין לה דבר בחיים, רשויות החוק רודפות אותה על לא עוול בכפה תוך שהן חושפות אותה לאיומים שונים מבלי שיתנו לה מענה למצוקות האמיתיות שלה ומתוך זילזול בצרכים שלה.
ממש התאכזבתי הן מהמסרים של הספר, הן מעיצוב הדמויות בעיקר אלי שהיא פשוט זינה הלוחמת בצדק, והן מהאמינות של הספר והאירועים שקורים בו.

I really did not like this book. I could not stand the characters, and the ending came too late and offered too little for me.
One morning, Bea’s life is turned upside down. Her husband has died and left her with very little savings. At the age of seventy, after she falls victim to a telephone scam that empties her bank account, partly because of her own innocence and even foolishness, she is forced to leave the trailer park where she has lived for decades and take to the road in her minivan.
Bea has no money, no skills, and a quarter tank of gas. She is creative enough to convince a young man to fill her tank by claiming her wallet was stolen, but she is not creative enough to find work and earn a living. Her sense of victimhood leads her to steal mobile phones from people who pity her and allow her to make a call on their devices. In short, she becomes like the thieves who took advantage of her innocence and emptied her bank account, which, of course, does not justify Bea’s behavior.
Allie’s life is also turned upside down one morning when both of her parents are arrested and accused of tax fraud. She is sent to a home for girls like her until a foster home can be found. There, one of the girls steals Allie's belongings, while the home's director does nothing to protect Allie. Worse, the authorities are blind to the violence of the girl and her boyfriend, so Allie is forced to run away and falls into the path of a man who exploits runaway girls. Allie refuses him, and only through great resourcefulness does she manage to escape. That is how she meets Bea.
I have many negative things to say about the meeting between Bea and Allie. Bea is hysterical, convinced that she has fallen victim to a carjacking, which is rather strange considering that this is a fifteen-year-old girl who jumps into her minivan, lies down on the floor, and screams at her to drive.
When Bea understands that she has not been carjacked, she tries to get rid of Allie. When that fails, she plans to use her for theft and fraud. Simply from bad to worse. Bea is not a good person, certainly not an honest one, and throughout the book she repeatedly proves her poor and ugly character traits.
She calmly and happily accepts Allie’s financial contribution, and only because of that money is she willing to continue helping Allie, even after she hears her horrifying story.
Only in the final part of the book does Bea’s attitude toward Allie begin to change, but I think she simply realizes that Allie is a goose that lays golden eggs. As proof, when Allie’s mother returns, Allie forces Bea on her and announces that Bea will be moving into their guest room. It is true that Bea returned Allie’s belongings and testified on her behalf in court, but the story is not believable, given that they had known each other for only eight days and that Allie provided the money Bea so desperately lacked.
Reading the book is not pleasant, heartwarming, or enjoyable. It points to the terrible weaknesses of the child welfare system, to the indifference and apathy of the various officials who do not see each child as a human case, an entire world and a soul to be saved, but merely as another sad case in a chain of sad cases they handle under poor conditions and without resources. I was also very surprised that Allie’s character remained such a fighter for justice and honesty after everything she had been through, and by the social worker’s admission of her failures in court. In my experience, representatives of the state are not quick, and certainly not eager, to admit their failures.
I was also very bothered by the author’s choice to place Allie’s behavior on the same level as Bea’s when Bea tries to teach Allie a lesson.
Bea is a seventy-year-old independent woman who could find work, earn money, and live with dignity, but she chooses to lie, deceive, and steal. Allie, by contrast, is a fifteen-year-old girl who has nothing in life. The authorities pursue her through no fault of her own, while exposing her to different dangers without giving her any real response to her actual distress, and while disregarding her needs.
I was deeply disappointed by the book’s messages, by the characterization, especially Allie, who is simply Xena the warrior princess of justice, and by the credibility of the book and the events that take place in it.
