Grey, הוא רומן רומנטי עכשווי, קליל ומשעשע, על מרדית’, אישה שנמלטת מחייה בקליפורניה ומגיעה כמעט חסרת כול לחווה בטקסס. שם היא פוגשת את ג’ק, מנהל חווה קשוח ויהיר, ואת אידית’, סבתו בת ה־104, שמבינה מהר מאוד שמאחורי הדימוי המפונק של מרדית’ מסתתרת אישה חזקה, פגועה ואינטליגנטית. זה ספר על מראית עין, הזדמנות שנייה, משפחה לא צפויה והיכולת להתחיל מחדש במקום שבו אף אחד לא מצפה ממך להצליח.
ספר מענג, משעשע ומצחיק.

לקוראים שמחפשים רומנטיקה קלילה, מצחיקה וחמה, עם חווה בטקסס, גיבורה שמתחילה מחדש, גבר קשוח וסבתא בת 104 שגונבת את ההצגה.
הכימיה בין מרדית’ לג’ק משעשעת, אבל הכוח האמיתי נמצא בדמותה של אידית’, שרואה מבעד למראית העין ועוזרת למרדית’ לעמוד שוב על הרגליים.
התרגום טוב, אבל משהו מן הקצב הקומי של המקור באנגלית הולך לאיבוד. בעברית הספר עדיין מקסים, רק מעט פחות חד ומשעשע.
מרדית' נמלטת מביתה בקליפורניה לטקסס בתקווה שתוכל להתגורר אצל אחותה החורגת, הלן. היא והלן מעולם לא היו קרובות, אבל היא בטוחה שהלן תגיש לה עזרה, במיוחד לנוכח העובדה שהיא נמלטה באמצע הלילה ללא אוכל, ללא בגדים למעט אלה שעל גופה וללא כסף.
מרדית' מוכרת את צמיד הטניס משובץ היהלומים שבעלה אנדרו קנה לה, ורוכשת כרטיס טיסה אבל לפני שהיא עולה למטוס היא מגלה שאחותה נמצאת בפריז לשלושה חודשים.
הלן שאף פעם לא העריכה מידי את מרדית' מפנה אותה לחווה בלו סטון ולמנהל החווה ג'ק. הלן היא מזכירתו הנאמנה של ג'ק והוא מוכן לקבל את מרדית' מתוך ידיעה שמרדית' מפונקת ועם קצת קשיים היא תנטוש אחרי יום. לכן, כשמרדית מגיעה מרוטה ותשושה לג'ק הוא לא מפנה לה כתף קרה, הוא מציע לה להיות עוזרת הבית שלו ומשכן אותה בצריף נטוש ורעוע בפאתי הבית הגדול.
סבתו אידית' בת 104 מיד קולטת שמשהו בבחורה שהתייצבה בחווה אינו כפי שהוא נראה והיא מסייעת למרדית' עם בגדים ועם התאקלמות כך שלאחר שבוע ג'ק המופתע עדין מוצא את מרדית' בחווה, עובדת קשה מתמיד להוכיח את עצמה ולהרוויח את לחמה, ו…לובשת את בגדיו.
הסצנות בין ג'יק למרדית' מצחיקות ומשעשעות. ישנן אולי 2 סצנות סקס בספר, אבל זה לא באמת מפריע כי העלילה כל כך מעניינת וכך גם מערכת היחסים בין מרדית', אידית' וג'יק. אבל הדמות הגדולה של הספר היא אידית', שבחוכמה רבה רואה מבעד לדמות החיצונית של מרדית' ומסייעת לה, אומנם בדרך מחוספסת, לעמוד על שתי רגליה.
דווקא הלן , אחותה של מרדית', מעצבנת ומאכזבת. ולפחות מהמחצית של הספר כמעט עד הסוף היא לא מופיעה או מוזכרת כך שממש רווח לי כשהיא נעלמה רק בכדי לחזור לסגור את הסיפור בצורה מספקת.
ברקע זהו סיפור על העמדות פנים, על מראית עין ועל אכזבות והזדמנויות שניות. אני אוהבת את הסופרת הזו, יש לה דרך מיוחדת ודמויות נשיות שהן צבעוניות ואינטיליגנטיות.
מרדית', למרות הדימוי החיצוני שלה, היא אישה חזקה ואינטיליגנטית שנקלעה לסיטואציה בעייתית בסביבה בעייתית. דווקא הוצאתה מהסביבה הטבעית שלה מאירה את היתרונות שלה באור חיובי ומאפשרת לפתח את הדמות שלה בצורה עגולה ויפה. וישנו גם אפילוג ממיס לבבות שזה אחד הדברים הכי חשובים בספרים האלה, לקבל את הזוויות של הסופר לגבי עתיד הדמויות.
אז מבחינתי ספר טוב מאוד, פחות הייתי מסווגת אותו כרומן רומנטי ויותר כספר שעוסק בחיים משפחה או סתם בדברים שקורים בחיים.

קראתי אותו באנגלית ובעברית ולמרות התרגום הטוב מאוד, הרגשתי שמשהו אובד בו והספר פחות משעשע מהגירסא באנגלית. בעברית הוא לא 4 כוכבים טהורים אבל מה זה משנה עדין הוא ספר מקסים, שעוסק בנושאים מאוד רגישים.

A delightful, entertaining and funny book.
Meredith runs away from her home in California to Texas, hoping she can stay with her stepsister, Helen. She and Helen were never close, but she is sure Helen will help her, especially given the fact that she fled in the middle of the night with no food, no clothes except those on her body, and no money.
Meredith sells the diamond tennis bracelet her husband Andrew bought her and buys a plane ticket, but before boarding the flight she discovers that her sister is in Paris for three months.
Helen, who never thought too highly of Meredith, sends her to Blue Stone Ranch and to the ranch manager, Jack. Helen is Jack’s loyal secretary, and he is willing to take Meredith in, assuming she is spoiled and that a little hardship will make her leave after a day. So when Meredith arrives, worn out and exhausted, Jack does not exactly give her a warm welcome. He offers her a job as his housekeeper and houses her in an abandoned, rundown shack on the edge of the main house.
His grandmother Edith, 104 years old, immediately senses that something about the woman who has shown up at the ranch is not what it seems. She helps Meredith with clothes and with settling in, so that after a week, a surprised Jack still finds Meredith at the ranch, working harder than ever to prove herself and earn her keep, and wearing his clothes.
The scenes between Jack and Meredith are funny and entertaining. There may be two sex scenes in the book, but that does not really matter because the plot is so enjoyable, as is the relationship between Meredith, Edith and Jack. But the great character of the book is Edith, who wisely sees beyond Meredith’s external image and helps her, admittedly in a rough way, stand on her own two feet.
Helen, Meredith’s sister, is actually annoying and disappointing. For at least half the book, almost until the end, she does not appear or get mentioned, so I was genuinely relieved when she disappeared, only for her to return later and close the story in a satisfying way.
In the background, this is a story about pretending, appearances, disappointments and second chances. I like this author. She has a special way of writing, and her female characters are colorful and intelligent.
Despite her external image, Meredith is a strong and intelligent woman who found herself in a difficult situation within a difficult environment. Removing her from her natural surroundings actually illuminates her strengths in a positive light and allows her character to develop in a rounded and beautiful way. There is also a heart-melting epilogue, which is one of the most important things in books like these: getting the author’s glimpse into the characters’ future.
So for me, this is a very good book. I would classify it less as a romance novel and more as a book about life, family, or simply things that happen in life.
I read it in both English and Hebrew, and despite the very good translation, I felt that something was lost in it and that the book is less funny than the English version. In Hebrew it is not a pure four-star read, but what does it matter? It is still a lovely book that deals with very sensitive subjects.
