זהו הספר השלישי של בקמן שקראתי. אהבתי את הספר הראשון "איש ושמו אובה", לא סבלתי את "סבתא שלי מוסרת דרישת שלום וסליחה". הוא ממש צילק אותי ושנים נמנעתי מקריאת ספרים נוספים שלו. לפני שהתחלתי את "עיר הדובים" קראתי סקירות על הספר והחלטתי לתת לבקמן הזדמנות נוספת מתוך החלטה פנימית שאם אני סובלת במהלך הקריאה שלו אני מפסיקה את קריאת הספר באמצע.

"עיר הדובים" מאוד שונה משני הספרים האחרים שקראתי.

זהו סיפורה של עיירה קטנה, נידחת ומנומנמת בשוודיה. העיירה ממוקמת באיזור ספר, שכוח אל ונידח שאין בו אטרקציות או עיניין. התושבים המעטים שנותרו בעיירה מתאמצים לשרוד כלכלית והדבר היחידי שמותיר את נר התקווה דולק הוא קבוצת הוקי קרח של בני הנוער בתיכון. אי אז בעבר, הקבוצה סיפקה לעיירה גאווה גדולה בניצחון שהובילו. בעקבות אותו הניצחון נבנה היכל הקרח. מבנה גרנדיוזי שמשקף את תהילת העבר. עיניי כלל התושבים נשואות להיכל הקרח בתקווה שתושב העטרה ליושנה וכך גם תיפתח הזדמנות לסיים את תקופת השפל של תושבי העיירה.

והנה, נראה שהשנה, קבוצת ההוקי של התיכון עומדת לשחזר את אותו הניצחון הגדול ולהביא לעיירה את הכבוד וההתקווה לשיגשוג המיוחל בפעם השניה.

כל תושבי העיירה מתאחדים במאמץ סביב קבוצת ההוקי שנראה שהקפטן שלה, קווין, יכול להוביל אותה לניצחון.

אבל, מספר ימים לפני המשחק הגורלי, מתרחש אירוע דרמטי וטראגי שיטרוף את הקלפים.

תוך שהוא עובר בין נקודות ההשקפה של דמויות שונות בעיירה, הסופר מתאר את האופן שבו התושבים מתיישרים אל הנרטיב המרכזי של פרנסי ותומכי קבוצת ההוקי שמטרתם לקעקע את אמינות הסיפור: האירוע הדרמטי והטראגי לא התרחש ולמעשה שאותו אירוע הוא המצאה, שקר שנועד להכשיל את נבחרת ההוקי של הנוער.

לאט, נבקעים סדקים בחומה ומתגלה הנרטיב המקביל, החתרני שבעצם אומר שהאירוע התרחש. הסופר משמיע את קולם של הספקנים שמעיזים להתנגד לנרטיב המרכזי וגם מתאר את גורלם.

"אמו של פיליפ יודעת להבחין בין נכון ללא נכון, בין טוב לרע, אבל היא גם אמא. ומהו תפקידה של אם?"

מהסיפור עולות דילמות קשות, במיוחד דילמות מוסריות. הדילמות אינן של אותם בניי עיירה שאין להם מוסר או מצפון ומוכנים להעלות לעולה את האנושיות רק בכדי להשיג עוד ניצחון בתחרות ההוקי, אלא של אותם אלה שתלויים בקבוצת ההוקי ובניצחונה ומצפונם מייסר אותם.

שתי הבעיות המרכזיות בספר הן נקודות ההשקפה המרובות והאופן שבו בקמן עובר בינהן דבר שמאוד מבלבל ולא ברור. ובנוסף, העובדה שעד מחצית הספר לא באמת מתרחש משהו שקשור לעלילה המרכזית. כלומר, בקמן מספק לקורא רקע ומכין את השטח לאירוע, אבל ההכנה הזו ארוכה מידי ויותר מידי עוסקת בהוקי קרח.

סהכ הקריאה היתה בגדר חוויה מתקנת לעומת "סבתא שלי מוסרת דרישת שלום וסליחה". היו בספר חלקים שבהחלט היו ראויים לציון 5, אבל ריבוי דמיות ונקודות השקפה והאורך של הפתיחה הורידו את הציון של הספר ל – 3.5 כוכבים.

אני עוד לא יודעת אם אמשיך לספר הבא בסידרה שראיתי שגם הוא תורגם לעברית. אני מרגישה שזה יהיה בגדר התגרות בגורל ובכך שהתגברתי על הטראומה של "סבתא שלי מוסרת דרישת שלום וסליחה".

This is the third Beckman book that I have read. The first book, "A Man Named Ova," was a great read, but I couldn't stand "My Grandmother Sends Greetings and Apologies." It scared me, and I avoided reading more of his books for years. Before starting "Beartown," I read the book reviews and decided to give Beckman another chance. I decided to stop in the middle if I suffered while reading it.

"Beartown" differs significantly from the other two books I have read.

This is the story of a minor, remote, and sleepy town in Sweden's frontier area. The area lacks attractions or sights, and the few remaining residents struggle financially. The only source of hope for the city is the high school youth ice hockey team, which led a victorious past and brought great pride to the community. Following their success, the grand Ice Hall was built, reflecting the glory of that era. The residents' eyes are now fixed on the Ice Hall, hoping that the hockey team restores the glory that had been lost and that an opportunity will arise to end the period of depression for the town's inhabitants.

It seems that the high school hockey team will repeat their victory and bring hope for long-awaited prosperity to the town for the second time this year.

All the townspeople rally around the hockey team led by Captain Kevin in their pursuit of victory.

A dramatic and tragic event occurs just a few days before the crucial game, ultimately destroying the cards.

The book's author describes how the town's residents align themselves with the central narrative of the city's leaders and the hockey team's supporters. The story talks about a tragic event that supposedly happened in the town. Still, the residents try to discredit the story's credibility by claiming it is a lie and an invention. The lie was designed to fail the hockey team of the youth. The author moves between the points of view of different characters in the town to provide a complete picture of the situation.

Cracks slowly appear on the wall, revealing a provocative narrative that opposes the central story. The writer also depicts the fate of skeptics.

The story presents complex dilemmas, particularly moral ones. These dilemmas are not faced by townspeople who lack morals or conscience and are willing to sacrifice humanity to secure another hockey victory—instead, the people who depend on the hockey team and its success experience moral conflict within themselves.

Two main issues stand out in the book. First, there are multiple points of view, and Beckman switches between them, which can confuse the reader. Second, until halfway through the book, nothing significant happens to the main plot. Although Beckman provides a lot of background information and sets the stage for the event, this preparation takes too long and is overly focused on ice hockey.

I found the reading to be a positive experience after reading "My Grandmother Sends Greetings and Apologies." Although some parts of the book were exceptional and deserved a 5-star rating, the abundance of imagery, multiple perspectives, and the lengthy opening caused me to rate the book 3.5 stars.
