Tom Lake הוא הספר ה 5 של אן פאצ'ט שאני קוראת. כפי שכבר כתבתי בעבר, אני מוצאת שהכתיבה שלה לא אחידה חלק מהספרים מצויינים, חלקם טובים וחלקם לא. Tom Lake הוא אחד מהטובים.

זהו סיפור משפחתי, אם המשפחה, לארה, שחקנית לשעבר ואישתו של חקלאי בהווה, ושלושת בנותיה נפגשות במהלך קטיף דובדבנים בתקופת הסגרים של הקורונה. זו שנה קשה, בחווה חסרות ידים עובדות והפירות מבשילים. הבנות חזרו הביתה לסייע בקטיף, מבקשות ממנה לספר להן על התקופה שבה היתה שחקנית תיאטרון וניהלה מערכת יחסים עם שחקן ידוע ומפורסם – פיטר דיוק.

הסיפור נע אחורה וקדימה, לתקופה שבה לארה גילמה את הדמות של אמילי וובגיבס. קודם בהצגת תיאטרון של בית הספר, אחר כך בקולג' ולבסוף בתיאטרון המקצועי של טום לייק. בתיאטרון של טום לייק היא פוגשת בשחקן אלמוני, פיטר דיוק ומנהלת איתו פרשיית אהבים.

העלילה עוקבת אחר ילדותה של לארה, אחר קריירת המשחק קצרת המועד שלה, אחר יחסיה עם פיטר דיוק ואחר התאהבותה בבעלה, הנישואים לו והמעבר לחוות הדובדבנים במישיגן. במונולוגים פנימיים לארה משתפת את הקורא במחשבות והירהורים על הבחירות שלה בחיים ובנוסף, בחלקים שהיא שומרת לעצמה ולא משתפת את הבנות שלה.

הבנות אומנם לא רוצות להיות אמילי, אבל בגיל 15 הבת הבכורה שלה, אמילי, היתה מקובעת בהנחה שאביה האמיתי הוא פיטר דיוק. סוג של פנטזיית נעורים שהרבה נוער חווים וכתובה בספר הזה ממש ממש טוב.

בין לבין, הסופרת חוזרת להווה המשפחתי והאישי של הדמויות. היא מציגה באופן משכנע את הקשיים שבניהול חווה חקלאית ואת הלבטים ביחס להמשך המפעל המשפחתי בחווה. האינטראקציות בין בני המשפחה השונים, ביחוד בין לארה ובנותיה שזוכות להכיר את אימן כבחורה צעירה בשנות ה 20 שלה.

אחת הבעיות בספר זו העובדה שפאצ'ט מציגה משפחה מושלמת וסטרילית מידי: האב, ג'ו שהיה במאי ופגש את לארה במהלך הפקת אמילי, לא מקנא בדיוק. נהפוך הוא, ג'ו מאוד בטוח במקומו במשפחה ולא מפריעים לו הסיפורים או ההתלהבות של הבנות מהסיפורים האלה. לארה, ויתרה על קריירת המשחק שלה בלי להסתכל לאחור. תקופה מסויימת היא עבדה כתופרת של בגדי משחק בתיאטרון אבל גם זה עבר לה. מערכת היחסים בין הבנות חברית, אין בינהן חיכוכים, מריבות, חילוקי דיעות.

גם הקצב של העלילה לא מעיף את המח ורק בשליש האחרון של הספר ובפרט בפרקים האחרונים שלו, הסיפור צובר תאוצה ונפח מעניין דווקא לאחר שלארה מסיימת את מערכת היחסים עם פיטר דיוק. ובכלל עיצוב הדמות של פיטר דיוק כל כך סטראוטיפי: שחקן קטן ובינוני שמלא בעצמו ומנצל את הקשרים שלו בכדי להתקדם בהוליווד.

יחד עם זאת, הקריינות של מריל סטריפ מסייעת להחליק את התחושה הסטרילית שמקבלים מהסיפור. היא קריינית בחסד התמוגגתי ובזכותה הענקתי לספר 4 כוכבים מנצנצים.

I have read five of Anne Patchett's books so far, and Tom Lake is one of the best. As I have mentioned before, her writing can be uneven, with some books being excellent while others are just good or not up to par.

This is a story about a family, where Lara, the mother, used to be an actress but now works as a farmer's wife. During the Corona closures, Lara and her three daughters come together for cherry picking. This year, it's difficult as there are no extra helping hands on the farm and the fruits are ripening quickly. The daughters offer to help and while they are picking, they ask Lara to tell them about her time as a theater actress and her relationship with the famous actor, Peter Duke.

The story jumps between different times in Lara's life, starting with when she played the characters of Emily and Gibbs in a school play, then in college, and finally in Tom Lake's professional theater. It is at Tom Lake's theater that she meets an unknown actor named Peter Duke and has a love affair with him.

The story is about Lara's life from childhood to adulthood. It covers her brief career in acting, her romantic relationship with Peter Duke, and her eventual marriage to the love of her life. After getting married, Lara and her husband move to a cherry farm in Michigan. Throughout the story, Lara shares her innermost thoughts with the reader, reflecting on her life choices and the parts of her life that she keeps hidden from her daughters.

The girls do not want to be Emily, but at 15, her eldest daughter, Emily, was fixed on the assumption that her real father was Peter Duke. This is a type of youth fantasy that many youth experience and is written in this book really, really well.

Throughout the book, the author takes breaks from the main plot to focus on the current lives and personal issues of the characters. This effectively portrays the challenges of running a farm and maintaining a family business. The interactions between the family members, particularly between Lara and her daughters, are well-developed and explore their evolving relationships as the daughters grow into young adults.

In the book, it is clear that Patchett portrays a family that appears almost too perfect and sterile. The father, Joe, is a director who met Lara during the production of Emily. He is not possessive or jealous and exudes confidence about his place in the family. He is not bothered by the stories or the girls' excitement about them. On the other hand, Lara gave up her acting career without any regrets. She briefly worked as a seamstress of playclothes in the theater but soon moved on. The relationship between the girls is cordial, and they do not have any conflicts, fights, or disagreements between them.

The plot of the book doesn't move at a fast pace, and it's not until the last third of the book, particularly in the final chapters, that the story picks up speed and becomes more interesting after Lara ends her relationship with Peter Duke. Peter Duke's character design is quite stereotypical: he is a small and average actor who is full of himself and uses his connections to get ahead in Hollywood.

Meryl Streep's narration enhances the story's emotional depth. Thanks to her, I gave the book four stars.
