כל מה שלא אמרתי / מולי או'קיף

כל מה שלא אמרתי הוא ספר סוחף, נשאבתי לתוכו. הסיפור של אנני חזק יותר מהסיפור של דילן והדמות שלה עגולה יותר. אבל גם הסיפור של דילן מעניין.

אנני מגלה בתוכה עוצמות אחרי התעללות פיזית שעברה בנשואיה. דילן הוא רק טריגר למתוח את הגבולות שלה ולצאת מהמקום המוכר והלא כל כך נח שלה.

זה לא בדיוק ספר שנופל בז'אנר הרומן הרומנטי. הוא סיפור על אומץ, כיבוש הפחדים הפנימיים, על כיבוש יעדים.
נכון שיש בו גם חלק רומנטי, אבל הוא לא העיקר בספר הזה. העיקר היא הגדילה של אנני ויציאה מהמצב המשותק שבו חייה שנים רבות, בין אם אמא שלה כפתה עליה מצב זה או הויט. הדמות של דילן פחות מתפתחת במהלך הספר הזה, גם כי הסיפור שלו עדין לא נפרס כולו לעיני הקורא.

הדבר היחידי שבגללו גם הורדתי לספר כוכב, היא העובדה שהפרקים של דילן מסופרים בחלקם ע"י קול של מספר יודע כל. זה מחרפן אותי שפתאום יוצאים מהעלילה ומהדמות הנוכחית ופתאום כותבים עליה בגוף שלישי, כאילו הוא לא נוכח בסיפור. בנוסף, ישנו איזו חוסר אמינות מסויים במערכת היחסים של אנני ודילן, אם כי מערכת יחסים כזו אינה בלתי אפשרית .

מעבר לזה, הספר מושלם. באמת מזמן לא הרגשתי ככה בספר מהז'אנר. ספר אינטיליגנטי, עוסק בנושאים חשובים, הדמויות לא שטוחות ובעיקר אין כל עמוד שני סקס.

Everything I Left Unsaid / M. O’Keefe

Everything I Left Unsaid is a compelling book. I was completely drawn into it. Annie’s story is stronger than Dylan’s, and she is the more fully developed character, although Dylan’s story is interesting too.

Annie discovers strength within herself after the physical abuse she endured in her marriage. Dylan mainly triggers her to test her boundaries and move beyond the familiar, uncomfortable place she has been trapped in.

I would not describe this simply as a romance novel. It is a story about courage, confronting internal fears and reaching for goals. There is, of course, a romantic element, but for me it is not the center of the book. The real focus is Annie’s growth and her movement out of the paralyzed state she has lived in for years, whether that state was imposed on her by her mother or reinforced by her marriage. Dylan develops less in this book, partly because the reader hasn't yet been fully shown his story.

The one thing that made me lower my rating by a star was the way some of Dylan’s chapters shift into an omniscient narrative voice. It drives me mad when the story suddenly steps away from the character we are following and starts describing him in the third person, almost as though he were no longer present in his own story. There is also a certain lack of credibility in Annie and Dylan’s relationship, although a relationship like theirs is certainly not impossible.

Apart from that, I thought the book was excellent. I had not felt this way about a book in this genre for a long time. It is intelligent, deals with important subjects, the characters are not flat, and, most importantly, there is not a sex scene on every second page.
