בגיל 16 אליזבת אינה חייה את חייה כנערה. היא לומדת בהווארד במסלול לרפואה, נאסר עליה חאכול סוגי מזון מסויימים או לשתות סוגי משקה מסויימים והיא מעולם לא בילתה כפי שנערות בנות גילה מבלות. בהתקף של מרידה, היא מסרבת לאימא שלה, יוצאת לקניון רוכשת בגדים וצובעת את שיערה. בערב היא יוצאת עם חברה למועדון ומשם חייה לא ישובו להיות כפי שהיו.

בדיוק מסוג הספרים שאני אוהבת. סיפור מתח מתון לא סוער מידי, לא אלים מידי ונסבל מבחינת היכולת של העצבים שלי לשאת את העלילה.

גם הכתיבה הפתיעה, משעשעת, אינטיליגנטית אני מתפלאת שלא קראתי אף ספר של הסופרת עד היום.

אהבתי את אליזבת למרות שיש בה סוג של רובוטיות וחוסר יכולת לקרוא מצבים אנושיים. בחוסר האנושיות שבה היא מעוררת אמפטיה והיא הרבה יותר אנושית מהרבה אנשים אחרים.

הזיווג עם הדמות של ברוקס מוצלח ביותר והדמות שלו פשוט שובת לב.

הסיום צפוי ומהאמצע העלילה שיגרתית לרומן רומנטי שמשלב עלילת פשע. למרות 500 עמודים של הספר, הם עפו לי. הוסיפה לכך העובדה שהקריינית היא ג'וליה ווילן האלוהית שכל ספר שהיא מקריאה אני קונה גם בכסף מלא. ללא ג'וליה ווילן הספר היה מקבל 3 כוכבים והיא הוסיפה לו כוכב שלם לדירוג. ככה זה כשאוהבים 🥰

At sixteen, Elizabeth is not living the life of an ordinary teenage girl. She is already studying on a pre-med track at Howard, forbidden from eating certain foods or drinking certain things, and has never really gone out or had the kind of freedom girls her age usually have. In a sudden act of rebellion, she defies her mother, goes to the mall, buys new clothes, dyes her hair, and heads out to a club with a friend. From that night on, her life will never be the same.

This is exactly the kind of book I like: a moderate thriller, not too frantic, not too violent, and very manageable for my own nervous system.

The writing surprised me, too. It is witty, intelligent, and engaging, and I am honestly surprised I had never read anything by Nora Roberts before.

I liked Elizabeth, even though there is something slightly robotic about her, and she has a real difficulty reading human situations. Yet that very lack of ease with ordinary human interaction makes her sympathetic. In her apparent inhumanity, she becomes more human than many other people around her.

The pairing with Brooks works wonderfully, and his character is simply charming.

The ending is predictable, and from the middle onward, the plot becomes more routine for a romance novel with a crime storyline. Even so, the book’s 500 pages flew by for me. That was helped enormously by the narrator, the divine Julia Whelan, whose audiobooks I would buy even at full price. Without Julia Whelan, this book would probably have received 3 stars from me. She added a whole extra star to the rating. That is what love does 🥰
