Sincerely, Carter הוא רומן חברים-לאוהבים שמתחיל במקום מבטיח: חברות ילדות ארוכה, היסטוריה משותפת ומשיכה שמתעוררת בדיוק כשהשניים צריכים לעזוב את האזור הבטוח שלהם. החלקים על העבר מתוקים ומשעשעים. הבעיה מתחילה כשבהווה הם צריכים להתקדם, והעלילה מחליפה קלילות בחיבוטים מייגעים.

אני אוהבת את הכתיבה של הסופרת הזו אבל בתקופה האחרונה קשה מאוד לרגש ולעניין אותי. יש בי איזו כהות, עייפות החומר מהז'אנר הזה וסוג של שובע. אני מוצאת שבמהלך הקריאה רוב ספרי הרומנטיקה שאני קוראת נעים על הרצף של חביבים עד משמימים וזה מבעס ביותר כי היא כותבת לא רעה.

קרטר ואריזונה גדולו יחד כילדים. הוא הציק לה בכיתה ומחוצה לה, קיבל עונשים בגללה והיא פשוט לא סבלה אותו עד שיום אחד הם הבינו שכדאי להם לאחד כוחות נגד היקום והאנשים בו ומאז קרטר ואריזונה חברים טובים וצמודים. ואז כשהם בוגרים ועל סף קולג' הם מגלים את המשיכה המינית בינהם ומכאן הכל מתחיל להסתבך.

עד 60% מהספר הוא היה חביב ומתוק: הספר מורכב מפרקים של אירועי העבר, שמוצגים גם כמכתבים של קרטר ואריזונה אחד לשני. מערכת יחסיהם מהילדות נפרסת ויש בה משהו תמים ושובה לב. מאידך ההווה ומעבר מידידים לאוהבים מלווה בחיבוטים ולבטים ומחשבות שממש העיקו עלי. בהתחלה המעבר הזה היה סקסי, הסקס לוהט והתגובות שלהם משעשעות. אבל אז הסופרת פשוט התחרבשה עם עצמה וההווה הפך להיות חסר את התמימות ואת הפשטות של ההיסטוריה, הפסיק להיות משעשע והוא חסר את ההבנה הבסיסית שדברים כאלה קורים. מרגע לרגע ההווה הופך למדכא ומשמים ובשלב מסיים ריפרפתי לפרק האחרון ופשוט קראתי אותו וזהו.

אז כן כבר הערתי על הסופרת הזו שיש לה בעיה מהותית בסגירת העלילות. אבל כנראה זו גם אני שהפכתי להיות חסרת סבלנות כלפי הז'אנר והספרים בו.

Sincerely, Carter is a friends-to-lovers romance that begins in a promising place: a long childhood friendship, a shared history, and an attraction that emerges just as both characters are forced to leave the safety of what they already know. The sections set in the past are sweet and funny. The problem begins when the present-day storyline needs to move forward, and the novel replaces lightness with exhausting emotional hesitation.

Carter and Arizona grew up together. He teased her in class and outside it, got into trouble because of her, and she could not stand him. Eventually, they realized it made more sense to join forces against the rest of the world, and from that point on they became inseparable friends.

Then, as adults and on the verge of college, they discover the sexual attraction between them, and everything begins to get complicated.

Until about sixty percent of the book, the story is pleasant and sweet. It includes chapters from their past, some of them presented through letters Carter and Arizona wrote to each other. Their childhood relationship unfolds gradually, and there is something innocent and charming about it.

The present-day storyline, however, and the transition from friends to lovers, are burdened by hesitation, overthinking and emotional complications that quickly became tiring.

At first, the transition is sexy, the sex is hot, and their reactions are funny. Then the author loses control of the story. The present loses the innocence and simplicity of their shared history, stops being amusing, and seems unable to accept the basic fact that sometimes friends fall in love.

The more the story progresses, the more depressing and dull the present-day sections become. At a certain point, I skimmed ahead to the final chapter, read it, and stopped there.

I have already mentioned in the past that this author has a serious problem with endings. Still, part of the problem may also be mine. I have become much less patient with the romance genre and with books that repeat the same emotional complications without giving me anything new in return.
