Hollis and Magnolia became friends when they were both eight years old. Hollis’ family moved to a small town in Alabama, and their yard was right next to Magnolia’s. However, Hollis’ mother and Magnolia’s parents were not pleased with their friendship. Magnolia’s family was wealthy and influential in the town’s politics, while Hollis’s family was not. This difference in social status caused their parents to try and separate them in various ways.
Magnolia’s parents frequently remind her that Hollis is not in her social class and expect her to behave according to their standards of a true Southern girl. They plan out her future in great detail, including her professional occupation. On the other hand, Hollis’ mother constantly reminds him that he will never be good enough for Magnolia.
Over the years, Magnolia and Hollis have remained steadfast in their friendship and relationship. Despite suffering from social isolation and harassment, Magnolia sees Hollis as her savior, recognizing his vast heart and refusing to let him go. In the same way, Hollis relies on Magnolia for support when his mother is in the throes of alcohol-fueled fits of rage.
Despite their years-long friendship, neither Magnolia nor Hollis confesses their love due to societal expectations and feelings of inferiority.
The book starts on Magnolia’s wedding day, when she struggles with doubts and Hollis is heartbroken that Magnolia is marrying someone else. The story then takes us back to when they were both eight years old and continues to move forward, showing their journey from childhood to the present day.
The episodes alternate between Hollis and Magnolia’s points of view; the plot advances to the present and the moment when Magnolia is about to marry another.
Hollis and Magnolia’s friendship story is genuinely charming. The plot revolves around their 20-year friendship, which gradually develops into romantic love. Readers get a glimpse of their family issues through this journey, which helps them connect with them as characters.
The book features two main characters, Hollis and Magnolia, who are both very intriguing. The chapters that explore their memories of the past are skillfully written. However, the book has some shortcomings. At times, it reads more like a novel geared toward young adults than adults, and the frequent dramatic events can be overwhelming.
The end of the book appears to be a bit strange and flimsy.
The bottom line is the book is a pleasant read.
