אוונטורין היא דרקונית צעירה וסקרנית. נאסר עליה לצאת מהמערה של המשפחה, כי הכנפיים שלה אינן חזקות והקשקשים טרם התקשו כך שהיא לא מוגנת מחצים וחרבות של בני האדם. למרות שאימא שלה מעודדת אותה למצוא את התשוקה שלה בלימודי פילוסופיה ומתמטיקה בדיוק כמו אחיה, אוונטורין מתקוממת כנגד הרעיון שהיא לא מסוגלת להסתדר לבד בעולם החיצוני.

אוונטורין חומקת מהמערה של המשפחה ומתחילה לתור את סביבתה. כשהיא מוצאת אדם על ההר, היא שמחה. התמזל מזלה מהר ממה שהיא שיערה: היא תביא למערת הדרקונים של משפחתה אדם טעים. המעשה בוודאי ירשים את משפחתה ובעיקר את אימא שלה.
אבל, אוונטורין הצעירה לא מביאה בחשבון שבני האדם שופעים ברעיונות והתמודדות עם אדם בוגר אינה פשוטה כפי שהיא נראית. כשהיא עומדת להסתער הוא עומד ומבשל.
הריח משגע את אוונטורין. מה הוא מבשל שם? זה שוקו חם, שאוונטורין מעולם לא שמעה עליו לפני כן.
אוונטורין מסכימה להשעות את התוכניות שלה עד שאותו אדם יסיים להכין את השוקו החם. לרוע מזלה היא נתקלה במכשף אוכל, והשוקו החם מכושף, כך כשאוונטורין שותה אותו היא מאבדת את הכרתה וכשהיא מתעוררת היא הופכת לילדה אנושית בת שתים עשרה.

זהו סיפור חניכה והתבגרות קלאסי.
אוונטורין, שמשמרת חלק מתכונות האופי הדרקוניות שלה, לומדת על אומץ, חברות אמת, נאמנות ולא להיכנע גם כשקשה.
למרות שניתן לקרוא את הסיפור כמאבק על השגת המטרות בחיים, בעיניי יש בספר ביקורת על הריבוד החברתי ועל ההזדמנויות המעטות שמקבלות השכבות החלשות בחברה. אוונטורין מגיעה לעיר שבה שוקולד הוא מצרך של העשירים ורק בני משפחות מיוחסות ועשירות יכול להתמחות ולהיות שוקלטייר. אוונטורין, מסרבת לקבל את זה כגזירת גורל. חסרת מוצא וסמרטוטית היא עוברת מבית שוקולד אחד לאחר ונתקלת בהתנגדות קשה. לבסוף, היא לומדת להיות שוקולטיירית לא לפני שהיא נחלצת מאישה עשירה שחוטפת אותה, הופכת אותה למשרתת בסיגנון סינדרלה.
במישור היחסים הבינאישיים הספר מענג: הדמויות פשוט נהדרות. בעיקר סילקה, שאין פלא שקיבלה ספר המשך משלה.

"The Dragoness with a Heart of Chocolate" is a delightful and heartwarming fantasy novel.
Aventurine is a curious young dragon who cannot leave the family's cave due to her weak wings and soft scales that cannot protect her from human weapons. Her mother suggests that she study philosophy and mathematics, much like her brothers, but Aventurine rebels against the idea that she cannot manage independently outside the cave.
She embarks on a quest to capture a human and bring it to the dragon's cave, aiming to achieve the unthinkable and surpass the accomplishments of young and old dragons.
As Aventurine ventured out of her family's cave, she scanned her surroundings. Her luck was in her favor as she spotted a man on the mountain. Excited by her find, she planned to return the delicious person to her family's dragon cave. She believed her successful hunt would impress her family, especially her mother.
However, young Aventurine must consider that humans are complex beings with many thoughts and ideas. Dealing with adults is not as straightforward as it may appear. In one instance, when Aventurine is ready to attack, the adult stands up and begins cooking.
The scent is driving Aventurine insane. What could he be preparing? It turns out to be hot chocolate, a beverage that Aventurine has never encountered previously.
Aventurine decides to wait for the person making hot chocolate before proceeding with her plans. However, she encounters a food wizard who enchants the hot chocolate. As a result, Aventurine loses consciousness after drinking it and wakes up transformed into a twelve-year-old human girl.
Aventurine awakens from the spell, feeling disoriented. The wizard has denied her request to revert to her original form, leaving her unable to return to her family's cave. Unfortunately, her family will not recognize her in this state and may harm her if she tries communicating with them.
Despite her tendency to take risks, Aventurine has displayed intelligence and wisdom. In the face of adversity, she chooses to take action and walks toward the nearest town to search for more of the chocolate that caused her temporary blindness. She has a positive outlook and is determined to make the best of a difficult situation.
The story follows the journey of a young person growing up and maturing, which is a classic trope in literature.
Aventurine, who still possesses some dragon-like qualities, discovers the importance of bravery, genuine companionship, faithfulness, and perseverance despite difficulties.
While the story can be interpreted as a tale of overcoming challenges to achieve personal goals, I view the book as a commentary on the societal divide and limited opportunities available to those in marginalized communities. The protagonist, Aventurine, enters a city where only the wealthy and privileged are allowed to pursue the craft of chocolatier, while the poor are left with no choice but to accept their fate. Despite being homeless and destitute, Aventurine refuses to give up on her dream and persists in visiting various chocolate houses, despite facing numerous obstacles. Eventually, she succeeds in becoming a chocolatier, but not before being rescued from a wealthy woman who had abducted her and forced her to work as a servant, much like the character of Cinderella.
The book is a delightful portrayal of interpersonal relationships, with a cast of simply beautiful characters. Silca, in particular, is a standout character who has even earned her sequel.
I highly recommend listening to the book narrated by the excellent Gili Bar Hillel. I found it quite delightful.
