Shetland Island #2

ืœื“ืฃ ื”ืกื™ื“ืจื” โ€“

The second book in the Shetland Islands series differs from the first, which was a powerful opening for the series. It may also lose the gothic atmosphere because the main character is not Magnus Tate.

Jimmy Perezโ€™s budding relationship with Fran Hunter, a non-native divorcee, adds a unique layer to the story. Fran, an artist, is preparing for her first exhibition on the island alongside the successful island-born artist Bella Sinclair.

The period is the summer months when the sun never sets. Although life supposedly goes on as usual, and the islanders are used to long hours of light, the constant light disrupts the life cycle, making people tired, nervous, and generally restless.

On the morning of the exhibitionโ€™s opening, a man in a clown costume hands out flyers announcing the cancellation of the exhibition to passers-by. On the evening of the exhibition, a stranger arrives at the gallery and bursts into tears in front of Bella Sinclairโ€™s picture. When Jimmy Perez tries to cheer him up and understand who he is and where he came from, the man claims he doesnโ€™t remember his name and doesnโ€™t know why he burst into tears.

When Jamie leaves the stranger for a few minutes, he disappears, and the next day, he is found hanging in a barn with a clown mask on his face.

In this book, Jamie Perez is in no hurry to solve the mystery. Slowly, an extensive system of connections is revealed, the tensions simmering beneath the surface are exposed, and hidden secrets are revealed. The plot quickly focuses on three families living in a small village called Bidista.

While the plot moves between the main characters, the bookโ€™s unique atmosphere is still present, distinct from the first. While the first book lacks gothic darkness, the plot is still engaging. It weaves through circles of speculation and different lines of inquiry, leading to a somewhat hasty conclusion.

This book is a worthy sequel, offering a Less intricate plot than the first. The most captivating parts are the evolving relationship between Jimmy and Fran and their mutual insecurities. I highly recommend experiencing this on Audible, where Gordon Griffinโ€™s performance is truly exceptional.
