אני מאוד אוהבת את הספרים של הסופרת, אבל הספר הזה נופל קצת מהספרים האחרים שלה. הוא נע סביב 3.5 כוכבים בעיקר בגלל הסיום שלו.

סיפורה של משפחת ריבה, משפחה דיספונקציונלית שמתגוררת במאליבו.

אב המשפחה, זמר מפורסם, הוא בגדר נעלם שכבר 20 שנים לא פגש את ילדיו. האם מתה בטביעה וארבעת הילדים שנותרים לבד לכלכל את עצמם ולמצוא את מקומם בעולם.

במשך השנים, עם היעלמות האב, הם סובלים ממצוקות כלכליות אבל עם מות האם המצב מחריף עד כדי כך שהאחות הבכורה, נינה ריבה, נושרת מהלימודים בשנה האחרונה בכדי לכלכל אותם.

הספר נע בין ההוה, המתרחש בשעות שלפני ובזמן מסיבה גדולה שעורכת נינה, ובין העבר המתאר את ההיסטוריה והשורשים המשפחתיים שמתחיל אי שם באמצע שנות ה 50.

הוא בעיקר משרטט כרוניקה של קריסה ידועה מראש. את נתיב הדמים שמוביל להווה שבו הדמויות השונות אוספות את שיברי חייהן ומתחילות מחדש.

ככל שהיום הולך וכלה, כך תחושת הקטסטרופה הולכת וגוברת עד שקצת לפני חצות היא מגיעה לשיאה. ההיסטוריה המשפחתית תתפורר לרסיסים כמו חייהם של ארבעת האחים ותתגבש מחדש למשהו מגובש וחזק יותר.

אף לא אחד יצא מהלילה הזה כפי שנכנס אליו וחייהם יעברו שינוי דרמטי.

רק הפרק האחרון כל כך חירב לי את ההנאה מהספר. הוא סוג של פיתרון אינסטנט שלא באמת נדרש קצת מזכיר את שריפות קטנות בכל מקום מאת ng סלסט.

למרות שהספר לא מתרומם לרמה של אוולין הוגו או דייזי והסיקס, הוא כתוב היטב ואהבתי את הסיפור של ארבעת האחים.

I enjoy the author's books, but this one falls short at the end, hovering around 3.5 stars.

The story is about the Riva family, who live in Malibu and have many issues that make them dysfunctional.

The famous singer and father of the family has been absent for 20 years, leaving his children without contact. The mother died by drowning, and the four children are left alone to support themselves and find their place in the world.

The family has faced financial difficulties since the father's disappearance. Still, the situation worsens with the death of the mother. The eldest sister, Nina Riva, dropped out of school in the last year to support them.

The book alternates between the present when Nina is hosting a big party, and the past when she explores her family history from the mid-1950s.

It chronicles the aftermath of a collapse, where characters collect fragments of their lives and start anew.

As the day progresses, the feeling of a looming disaster intensifies until it reaches its climax just before midnight. The family story will fall apart, just like the lives of the four brothers, only to be pieced back together into something more coherent and resilient.

No one left that night unchanged; their lives were forever altered.

The last chapter ruined my enjoyment of the book. It felt like an unnecessary, quick fix and reminded me of Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere.

Although the book is well written, it does not reach the level of Evelyn Hugo or Daisy and the Six. However, I enjoyed reading the story of the four siblings.
