עוד ספר קולח מבית קריסטן אשלי.
הוא היה פחות מרגש מ"ההימור" שבו במרכז הספר ישנו קטע עצוב להפליא וכתוב היטב. אבל הצליח להפתיע אותי בדמויות שהיא בחרה:

הגיבורה הראשית, ג'וזפין מאלון, רווקה בת 45 שבמשך 23 שנים ליוותה את הבוס שלה, צלם אופנה ידוע ברחבי הגלובוס. אהבתה העקרה אליו, הובילה אותה לאבד את האפשרות ללדת ילדים משלה ולמצוא אהבה בזוגיות יציבה.

הגיבור הראשי, ג'ייק (ג'יימס) ספיר, בן 47 גרוש 3 פעמים, עם 3 ילדים משתי נשים שונות. הוא אולי חלומה הרטוב של כל אישה מבחינת המראה (מתאגרף מקצועי לשעבר, ובליגת החובבנים בהווה, מסוקס ושרירי) אבל הוא בהחלט לא חלומה של כל אישה שצריכה להתמודד עם המטען החריג שהוא מביא עימו לקשר בדמות 3 ילדים כשהצעיר מבינם, איתן, בן 8 , ושלוש אקסיות. שלא לדבר על עינייני כלכלה כאלה ואחרים שהופכים אותו לדמות מאוד אנושית בעיניי.

שתי הדמויות הללו לא שיגרתיות בספרים מהז'אנר שטווח הגילים שהוא מכסה הוא בין 20-30 ובטח שלרוב לא מעורבים בסיפור האגדה ילדים.

ג'וזפין וג'ייק נפגשים בהלוויה של אידי, סבתא של ג'וזפין ולאחר מכן בהקראת הצוואה. סבתא של ג'וזפין גידלה אותה מגיל 11 ועתה מעבר לכך שהיא מורישה לה את כל רכושה, היא מבקשת בצוואה כי היא תהיה של ג'ייק. ג'וזפין שכאמור, העבירה את רוב חייה בנסיעות מסביב לגלובוס מוצאת את הבקשה של סבתא שלה מגוחכת, הזויה, מעליבה ובלתי אפשרית. ג'ייק מאידך, מתכוון למלא כל פסיק בבקשה של אידי שאותה הוא וילדיו אהבו וכיבדו.

אחד הדברים שבגללם הורדתי לספר ציון היא העובדה שאני בהחלט יכולה להבין משיכה גופנית בין ג'וזפין וג'ייק, אבל אני לא יכולה להבין את קפיצת הראש של ג'וזפין למערכת יחסים עם הילדים של ג'ייק. זה לא שאני חושבת שדברים כאלה לא אפשריים ( החיבור הזה והכימיה הזו עם הילדים), אבל כשדברים כאלה קורים במציאות הם לא קורים בשבוע הראשון להיכרות והכימיה הזו היא לא משהו מובן מאליו ולא משהו טריוויאלי.

דבר אחר שהפריע לי, הוא האופי של ג'וזפין שלא הצלחתי לברר לעצמי עד סוף הספר אם היא סנובית מתנשאת או שהיא אדם חם ולבבי ואוהב שמסתתר מהעולם בשל מוראות החיים. גם לא הצלחתי לברר לעצמי אם בשורה התחתונה אני מחבבת אותה או לא. היו לה קטעים חביבים במהלך הספר אבל גם קטעים שחשבתי לעצמי "ברצינות?" מי מדבר ככה, למה לנעול נעלי עקב בגובה 10 סמ' כשאת מועדת לנפילות והיתקלויות חוזרות ונשנות?

ג'ייק נתפס בעיניי, על כל מגרעותיו (ויש מגרעות רבות) כאנושי ומציאותי יותר.

עוד נקודה בולטת בספר שג'ייק הוא אפילו יותר שתלטן וניאנדרטל מהדמויות הגבריות הממוצעות בספרים מהז'אנר וג'וזפין היא אפילו כנועה למונרך ויותר דרמה קווין מהנשים הממוצעות בספרים מהז'אנר.

סה"כ הקריאה בספר קולחת והוא קריא ביותר.

Here's another captivating book by Kristen Ashley.

It was less exciting than "The Gamble," where there is a sad and well-written passage in the center of the book. But managed to surprise me with the characters she chose:

The story centers around Josephine Malone, a 45-year-old unmarried woman who spent 23 years traveling the world with her boss, a renowned fashion photographer. Despite her deep feelings for him, he never reciprocated her love, leaving her unable to have children or find a lasting romantic relationship.

The main character in this story is Jake Sapir, also known as James, who is 47 years old and has been divorced three times. He has three children from two different women, making it challenging to maintain a stable relationship. Although he may be attractive with a muscular build from his former professional boxing career, his life is complicated and comes with a lot of baggage. His youngest child is Eitan, who is eight years old. Jake also has to deal with the financial struggles of supporting three children and three ex-partners. Despite his flaws, Jake is a relatable and human character.

Children are not typically involved in fairy tales, but these two characters are unique in that they are included despite the age range of the story being between 20-30.

Josephine and Jake first meet at the funeral of Edie, who happens to be Josephine's grandmother. Later, they meet again at the will reading ceremony. Edie had raised Josephine since she was 11 years old, and in her will, Edie bequeaths all of her property to Josephine but requests that she be given to Jake. Josephine, who has spent most of her life traveling around the world, finds her grandmother's request ridiculous, delusional, insulting, and impossible to fulfill. In contrast, Jake intends to honor Edie's request down to the last detail, as he and his children love and respect her dearly.

I came down to Tree and Half Stars because although I noticed a physical attraction between Josephine and Jake, I cannot understand why Josephine jumped headfirst into a relationship with Jake's children. While such a connection and chemistry with the children is possible, it typically doesn't happen within the first week of getting to know each other. Additionally, this type of chemistry is neither obvious nor trivial.

Another thing that bothered me was Josephine's character. Until the end of the book, I couldn't decide if she was an arrogant snob or a warm, kind, and loving person who hides from the world due to her fear of life. I also couldn't decide if I liked her or not. She had lovable parts throughout the book, but there were also moments when I thought, "Seriously?" Who talks like that, and why wear 10 cm high heels when prone to repeated falls and collisions?

Jake, despite his many faults, appears human and realistic in my eyes.

The book highlights an interesting point about the characters. Jake is portrayed as a highly dominant and primitive figure, even more so than the typical male characters in genre books. Meanwhile, Josephine is depicted as submissive to the monarch and tends to be overly dramatic compared to the average female characters in the genre.

The book is easy to read and flows smoothly from start to finish.
